    I was in love with that thing tell I saw that 460, one of the best motors every made. That truck is to big for that motor, it needs a 350 or 400 Cummins Diesel with a 9 or 10 speed behind it.

      I almost wondered if it might have been converted till I saw the hydraulic brakes instead of air... I agree 100%, I used to cuss these Fords back in the day when I had to overhaul those Big Cam Cummins in these!!(They actually tilted the engine instead of sitting straight up and down cause they were so tight!!! LOL) but I can't even imagine the fuel mileage he is getting, not to mention working that poor 460 to death!! Cool start for a conversion though!!!

      @@timbtimmyjim its probably geared LOW i'm gonna say 67 MPH foot to the floor not for lack of power but for lack of RPM ill bet it's screaming at 3k doing 65 on the flats
      that said the 460 can handle it

    Diesel swap would make it much more viable in this day and age...you would also be able to put in a more up to date Diesel generator for road usage too so you can run both engines on a single fuel supply

    Very cool!
    As a motor home owner for many years, I suggest that any interior modification you do includes planning for each item to be dual-purpose...i.e. *seating swaps to sleeping space with jack-knife or sleeper sofa. *Ditch the bunk beds for a dinette (that can drop into a bed). *Rebuild the back bumper/door steps to have storage for stuff you want outside the coach (stinky slinky, oil, gas).
    Best luck and be safe.

    i drove for a fleet that had hundreds of L8000's and 9000's (the diesels), so I saw the yearly progression of changes in the trucks. Pretty sure you have a newer (1985 and on) front hood, because the Blue Oval and rectangular headlights didn't come out until 1985 or so. Before that, it was "F-O-R-D" in large letters across the top of the hood. The V-8 for the gas versions was the 429 for most of its life, and those missing badges on the hoods probably were "429".Because the newer and older front hood "clips" were interchangeable it was pretty common to see "gas" hoods on diesels and vice versa after wreck repairs or severe cracking of the fiberglass. My personal favorite was the 1986 model with the "Batwing" aero kit, new styling, and the L10 Cummins.

    • @FordEra
      @FordEra  5 місяців тому +1

      thank you so much, its been driving me nuts trying to figure out exactly whats going on. it definitely should have had round headlights in it. And i think it is a 429 and not a 460. i need to really dig into it

    • @wallochdm1
      @wallochdm1 5 місяців тому +2

      Very cool truck. Definitely looks like ex-Fire Rescue. When we would have "accident" trucks, the body shop would just source a good hood assembly from an older parts truck because the hoods were identical except for the trim.So, you might have a 1986 with the updated grille, blue oval emblem, and rectangular headlights come back looking like a pre-1985 with "F-O-R-D" and round lights. I'm no expert, but I do know that a 1979 would have round headlights. The 7000, 8000, and 9000 were all diesels. Drop a digit and you had the numbers for the gas version(s). We had 3208 CATS w/ a 10=speed Road Ranger in the 8000's and they were gutless. Later, we stopped buying 8000's and had 9000's with the L10 Cummins, a very good motor. My guess is that motor would make you very happy.

    Looks great! I used to have a camper trailer so a couple tips. Storage is key, inside and out so maximize your space. Make sure your grey/black tank is at least 35 gallons and easily accessible to dump (I didn’t see the dump tube hookup so I’m unsure of your setup). Check the roof! Make sure it’s sealed and use new sealant like Dicor lap sealant and coat the roof white for longevity. Enjoy it! Looks awesome

    Bruh if the fuel pump went out again I’d be pissed… the current pump was what, a week old? 😂 I definitely love this truck. I’d have to do some changes in the back just because I don’t like some of the things with the doors and fixtures but this baby is beautiful. Definitely an old ambulance. I use to drive an ambulance this size but had 4 doors. Had 2 gurneys in the back. My girl was perfect 😂

  • @coreycarver9974

    I would redo the inside to my standards of comfort. Put a 24 valve Cummins with a Allison Transmission. Huge exhaust stacks, a wing on the cab, Texas bumper, custom painted to match a trailer, and light up the truck and trailer with tons of lights

  • @tylerbarrett6652
    @tylerbarrett6652 5 місяців тому +2

    Well... I hope you paint it because it looks too much like an ambulance as it is. The other thing - and some manufacturers are doing this - add slide out trays to make accessing the generator and other amenities easier to access. For maintenance and repair, the generator would slide out like a drawer - and it makes EVERYTHING so much easier. Some will even add kill-mat to deaden the noise. Good luck with it. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

    Last comment but absolutely subbed! It’s a bit short but a great video, I can’t complain I hope you keep the outside patina, old AC (or at least the housing) and as much original stuff as you can but make the inside less basic and either go modern if that’s what you like or go with the style of the era in either modern with a mix of 70s or just 70s or it’s a 79 so you could get away with early 80s but this truck looks very 70s. Then use it, enjoy it, don’t let it sit.

    Find a Donor Ford with a Brazilian Ford diesel diesel in it or even a cat don’t get the V8 3208 or 1160 we’ve had them. They great on fuel mileage, but lotta different scenarios to that motor that can become expensive, scuff that cab down, sand it down, match the paint and give her a facelift you’ll have that truck for a long time, if you do it right, we built big rig trucks, Peterbilt, and those Fords in the day cab off full restorations and turned them back where people thought they were brand new in the day, that’s probably one of the most safest trucks you’ll ever put your kids in if you know what you’re doing

    I once almost purchased a very used old Ghostbusters wagon ambulance.
    I can't recall, but it was a Cadillac?
    I passed on it. It was heavy and got very bad gas mileage about 8 miles per gallon.
    This was decades before the movie. It still had its lights, paint job on a used car lot.
    I'm guessing because a town might buy it.
    I'm not sure if the lights would have been legal for personal use?
    I'm not sure where it came from. It was rural NC. Many volunteer rescues used standard Ford vans, fitted out, because of the cost.
    I'm assuming it was from a hospital.

    the front hood is a 84 or newer ,thats when the head lights got square .it might have a 429 truck engine,is there a motor mount under the balancer ? .the L line of trucks would get the old 401/477/534 SD gas engines .my 1981 l900 has the 534 engine and round head lights .hydraulic brakes are easier for the average person to maintenance,but don't neglect them.there should be a fuel pump in the gas tank .install a fuel pump for each tank ,like a lift pump for a diesel .have those pumps feed into a bigger ,better main pump ,then the fuel pump might last longer

    I’m only at 1:52 but are those headlights standard? They look so modern like LEDS even. I love 70s trucks and just luxury vehicles with a bit of age to them, as far back as you can go and still have a usable vehicle is for me but with commercial stuff and high end stuff you can go back super far. I’d probably stick with 70s or 80s but 50s would be awesome!

Nothing on a L series will cross over to F series with exception of maybe switches or AC parts ect. Cabs come from Heavy Duty line with L700 being the smallest and going up to the L9000. The F series the F700 is the largest with the occasional and rare F800.

    Again an early comment ( 5:32 ) but it helps w/your interactions & I’m a 1st time viewer who will now sub but I don’t think the interior is right for this truck at all, it looks very basic and doesn’t suit something like this, but at least it’s done and working so mainly cosmetic. Personally, I’d make it look like it’s from the 70s with nice muted browns, lovely shag carpeting, comforting but not to wild 70s wallpaper again darker colours like burnt orange and browns but mix in some modern tech, maybe even make the tech look older like shell of an old tv with modern smart tv inside. Although nothing wrong with a CRT! ESP. With a chromecast you’d be sorted.

    GAS engine? that was surprising! less torque than a diesel engine, but more horsepower, very interesting. No air brakes, or did I miss something?

      Guess you don't know what a single burner hot plate is, an air fryer toaster oven or what purpose a camp stove serves.
      How about one of those plug-in coolers people use these days as a fridge that seem to be popular for some travellers.
      As far as a sink goes a shallow plastic tote could serve that purpose.
      That wasn't a very funny comment you made to laugh about that.. it was a bit sad sort of like people that are incapable of using their noodle.
      Maybe the previous people that built that rig didn't want the complexity of those amenities added to it for the sake of not having things that break and are always in need of repairs or cause more problems with things that use water like leaks.

    That fuel pump is never going to work long-term, you’ll be changing it every week. Go back to the factory fuel pump if you’re smart.
    Aftermarket electric fuel pumps like that are not supposed to be lifting fuel from the tank. They are supposed to be pushing fuel that is gravity fed from the fuel tank. So if you want to stay Electric, it needs to be below the level of the fuel tank.
