I’ll say it until I am blue in the face: the first 2 Yes albums should never be dismissed as pre-brilliance Yes. They were already brilliant in this, Yes 1.0 ❤

This is a first for me. JP has finally played a track that I recommended.
Check out FLASH. they made 3 albums with Peter. He had Tony Kaye on the first one. He did have a career, but it was never as big as YES was. Sadly he died alone and was found only because he was late for an appointment. He also NAMED the band., Peter quotes some classical music in his free-form guitar. It was different every time they performed it.

Yeah, you need to check out Flash, the band Banks formed after parting ways with the others. They basically sound like if Yes' original lineup here had they carried on together beyond that second album.
Great album! Surprisingly good start YES that this is their first studio album! Back then progressive music was just developing! Wonderful!
The original is very similar, though it has no solo like it. And is a bit more psychedelic. This is an excellent cover. 😊
The solo guitar reminds very the same year KC Moonchild experiment.

Along with Bill, Peter brought a jazzy side to early Yes. Not just musically, but structurally.
The guitar solo is typical of Peter’s solo for this track that he would improvise in concert, often going on for 15 minutes or more (and sometimes annoying the band in the process). As a product of the era, the long noodling solos were a thing, but at this stage Peter didn’t really have the musical chops to build (and especially improvise) an extended solo of substance. They were very stream of consciousness, where he would stumble across something he could develop from time to time, or reminded him of another melody (often classical) that he would drop in.
In the right band that approach can lead to interesting things, but Yes was really a band that was built around their arrangements, rather than this more jazz-like soling approach. I think it’s one of several reasons why Peter and the rest of the band eventually parted ways. He was also much more animated on stage than the other members (including the “playing the guitar on your knees and back onstage sort of thing).
Yeah, I've heard that infamous live version - feedback blasts that seem "random" instead of a logical next step/failed attempts to interact with Bill/Pop Goes The Weasel, everything's wrong. And the catch is, Ritchie Blackmore might have taken the same ingredients and cooked up something better, over a similar timespan - somehow Banks (despite his jazz chops) couldn't.

Good vid. It's fun watching you discover the roots of YES. Might think about reviewing the next 2 songs in the same show, solely based on length. "Yesterday and Today" is only about 2.5 minutes. The 2 songs are nothing alike though. "Y and T" is this beautiful restrained subdued ballad with Jon's amazing voice.
"Looking Around" is pure YES power. Organ, Bass, and Harmonies. Little over 4 minutes. Together or separate, can't wait for the next one. This entire album is excellent. 👍

Phil Collins has said that he never liked Yes as much once Peter Banks left (though he continued to listen to their stuff for Bruford). And, as I become older, I tend to fall on this side.

Excited you made it to the first album now. Really strong start for them and amazing listenability. If they had continued on this path and not done anything but this early style. They would have faded quickly but would have still had much to be proud of. I listen to the first two albums just as much as any of their bigger albums and more than any of the later ones after 90125 with maybe the exception of The Ladder.
Some great Yes/Jon originals to come as well.
I always felt that Peter showed remarkable sensitivity for jazz playing on this song, especially considering how young he was and that it had only been a year or so since he and Chris Squire were raving it up with The Syn. Sadly, you don't really hear him explore jazz guitar further with Flash. I think when Steve Howe came along Peter must have decided he didn't want to continue with that style of playing or else people would start making comparisons. But he did record a solo album in 1973 in collaboration with guitar master Jan Akkerman from Focus called 'Two Sides of Peter Banks'. I'm ashamed to admit I've never heard it, but I've read that he acquits himself well on it.
Not bad, the 12 string parts bring it back closer to the Byrdyes. Peter shows what he can do, lil too much maybe. Great volume knobbge. Flash!!!… aaa aaahhh. Thanks for the history lesson, a jazzy herstory lesson.

Yes' version is way better than the original (and I'm a big Byrds fan)...they really developed it and put more power into it
This is how to do covers. Take a middling song by a good band, add your own special sauce/guitar solo/unusual bass approach and put on your debut album. To convince you that it wasn't a fluke, they repeat the trick with Every Little Thing on this album, then Everydays and No Opportunity... on the next and Something's Coming, America, I'm Down and Money elsewhere. Yes were a great covers band.

Love the jazz influences on the first two albums. Peter Banks was not happy with his solo either. However, he does quote the melody of "Time like gold dust brings mind down" which is nice.
He had a difficult career post Yes but some success with Flash and a solo album. Third group Empire didn't get much attention.

"Roundabout" was my gateway drug addicting me to the band, but I didn't get into their earlier works until circa 2000, where I would listen to this and other sources of glee, while riding around during my last years of automotility. There's one that goes "Well well well another day..." which is very jazzy as well, and smooth Jon, but I forget the name. They've always been a great band. Thanks for sharing those daytrippy lyrics.
The track you refer to is 'Everydays', another cover by Buffalo Springfield, and written by Steven Stills!

Steve always pays tribute to Peter, and indeed mentioned him at the RRHOF induction, since that ghastly organization decided to ignore Peter completely. But a 'ROCK AND ROLL' organization that has Hip-Hop, Rap, and Disco in it as well as kind of a catchall for anything. If there was a RAP hall of fame, and maybe there is, I dounbt Led Zeppelin would get in.

The Byrds version is very good. Doesn’t go on as long. Maybe do a segment of originals and covers. Good choice with anything from Yes!

Now remember Justin, in an interview Jon said that he sounded horrible on this album. I will never understand why he thought that. I don't think Jon could sound horrible if he started throwing up 😱

Peter banks on guitar. Every bit as good as Steve Howe, but it didn’t work out with Yes, alas. Fantastic version of a great song.
It's very ironic that one of my favorite Yes songs was not written by Yes and had nothing to do with Steve Howe. When Bruford says that when he joined Yes he thought he was joining a _jazz_ band, I think this is what he meant. His cymbal work here was beautiful.
It's very interesting that you were disappointed with the solo. You're right, it lacks of progression, and I blame that on the lack of experience of a 21 year old guitarist, however talented he might have been at the time. Peter Banks himself disliked the solo and didn't like to listen to the song because, in retrospect, he said he could only hear all the mistakes he made. To this day I haven't heard a version of this song with Steve Howe in it. Wonder how it sounds.
AFAIK this song was never played beyond the earliest days. It certainly never made the transition to Steve's time in the band. Steve did play a bunch of songs from 'Time and a Word', but I think the only songs he covered from the debut were "Every Little Thing" on one of those early 2000's tours, and a bit of "Survival" from the '79 tour.
A fine song prog-jazzed up nicely. I still prefer the Byrds original, but it's a close call. (PS - one of my own songs works on that idea that when you're infatuated with someone, you think you see them everywhere)
I've been primed to be ready to enjoy jazz this afternoon, so this was just what I needed to hear (especially Bill Bruford's part, but yes, that intimacy, immediacy in Jon's vocal when they put it up front, too etc. - could've summarized that in "I agree").
Primed by what? Kind of Blue.
At the bank. Or the parking area thereof. With old folks who can get a bit bossy and impatient (really just impatient, but it can come across as bossy, and then there's a fight in the bank again). I opt out of that (because it's just adding to the trouble.) "Just allow yourself to be led. Don't try to take charge of the situation." It takes a long time.
So there's time enough for Kind of Blue in the parking garage. And a beer, maybe? Yes, why not. And as it weaves its way out into the world, the guys who try to get jobs washing cars come and wait for that closer by. And the head of security comes up and pokes his head in through the window, and says the jazz thing. I forget how it goes. Something like, "I like your jam". Hangs out near the car wash guys, so I turn up the volume. And then an old lady pokes her head in through the passenger window, gives me a huge smile, and on her way she goes, floating off on the music.
It's nice to have Kind of Blue again. They were selling it for R20 (I think that's 10c or 10p in real money - or 20 fokololos if you're in a cynical mood) at the SPCA shop. (I go there to see if anyone has bought my dictionaries. Yes, but only one of them.) I won't have it for long. The old (or totally ancient, or older) folk have decided they'll have it to fill all the spaces at their place.
Who'd have thought you could have a good time in a parking garage? Well I normally do, because I'm always armed with some Cardiacs ... but people don't respond the same way. Sometimes someone will look wounded or something. So turn the volume down if it's not possible to pretend not to notice.
Anyway, I'm well primed for some jazz, and there it was.
Magic jazz. In this distorted part of the world, if you combine it with a bit of beer it helps you see the guys collecting the trolleys as possibly your dentist in another world where everything didn't go wrong for them. And so on.
I need to prime more often, used to at work but now that I’m (semi) retired I forget… thanks for the run down and reminding me.
@@-davidolivares Another way you might prime is with Primus. Although that might make you into a bit of a primate if you're of a primal disposition on the day, and scare the neighbours, so I suppose caution is advised.

When did you listen to their second album, as you've mentioned here?
Peter Banks was rather successful with the band of his own Flash especially in the US. It made three albums before it fell apart.
After Yes he formed the band Flash. Didn't get the same exposure though.
They did make 3 pretty solid albums. If you like early Yes, you'll also like Flash.
Peter Banks would go on to form the band Flash.
