Wow what timing, Samosir island (the one in the middle of lake Toba if you are wondering) was my father's birthplace and i was just there not 2 weeks ago (visiting my grandfather's tomb and just relaxing away from the usual bustling life in the city). Also, my mom is from Bandung, a city in the shadows of an active volcano named mount Tangkuban Perahu (literally means upside down boat), and i am currently living here. Last year i just bought a piece of land right in the slopes of Tangkuban Parahu, and is currently saving to build it into a home i can move into, hopefully in the next 2 years (Why? Because the place is beautiful, around 1200 meters from sea level, good cool air all year round, lotsa greeneries, and yet within a stone's throw from Bandung city should i need to be doing anything in the city). Also fun fact, Bandung city, around 700 meters from sea level, is actually also located in a crater (called Bandung Basin) of Mount Sunda which exploded a long time ago. Is it dangerous? Maybe. But we have been living here for such a long time that we just consider this the way it is. We know its dangers, we will take refuge should the worst happens, but after all that, we'll get back here. Already happened in other volcanoes, the people always returned once the disaster ends. Heck there are even many of us working INSIDE the volcano crater, take Mount Ijen for example, i think there's a documentary about it in UA-cam somewhere. Just an info, y'know, i figured this is a good place to share with y'all, there are a lot of different ways of life in the world. For those complaining about the use of the words "of all time": As far as humanity is concerned, HE'S RIGHT! Toba almost made US, HUMANITY, EXTINCT the last time it erupted! Estimates put the death toll from Toba's eruption around 74,000 B.C. at OVER NINETY PERCENT OF ALL LIVING HUMANS AT THE TIME. That would equate to SEVEN POINT TWO BILLION today. Toba almost did to us what Chicxulub did to the dinos last time it erupted. As far as humanity is concerned, this is the biggest volcano of all time, and will be until Yellowstone goes off.
Please look farther than the first few paragraphs of a Wikipedia article you read. There’s a lot mounting against the Toba Catastrophe Theory. 7 billion people wouldn’t die from an eruption of similar magnitude to the one 74,000 years ago.
"I wish the word supervolcano could be banished from the record as it enforces the myth that Yellowstone only produces supereruptions,” said Michael Poland, the current scientist-in-charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. “Yellowstone is not going to erupt again anytime soon, and when it does, it’s much more likely to be a lava flow than an explosive event,” Poland said. “These lava flows are really impressive. They can be hundreds of feet thick. But they’re not particularly hazardous beyond the immediate area.”

2018s high casualities due to unwarned tsunamis that swept the tourist spot beaches at the year end where many parties and concerts are held. those tsunamis were unwarned because Indonesians tsunami warning system calculated by earthquakes and plate activities. while at 2018 tsunamis trigered by the colapse of material below sea levels. Those beaches is swept away unwarned while at its crowdiest time.
It would be very beneficial for your audiences if the speaker spoke with normal speed, included some semblance of required punctuation and considered getting the correct pronunciations for main volcanoes and place names - for example Krakatoa is actually pronounced "Crack-a- toe-a" and not the awful pronunciations used! There are various other extremely grating mispronunciations, as well! Unfortunately, these deficiencies severely distract from what would otherwise have been an excellent video! Much food for thought! Cheers.

That may seem outlandish, but it could be a minor "band-aid" solution in reducing gases of supervolcanoes - given how it historically has been proposed at places like Yellowstone. Though this would never be able to end "pressure," since that isn't really how volcanoes erupt.
Actually it's demonstrable that earthquakes travel like seismic waves crashing into each other dropping off earthquakes and agitating volcanoes. But it's okay the old everything isn't connected theory is the traditional theory but not updated
Interesting. I thought La Garita was extinct. Haven't heard anything on the local news here in Colorado. 4:50 I hate to be this way, but La Garita and Wah Wah Springs both are VEI 9s. They broke the scale. 18:19 There would be massive earthquakes for months before any eruption. So much for "silently". Not bad for having done no deep research.
When a geologist says a volcano is extinct they mean it hasn't erupted in a very long time by human standards. La Garita still has a lava chamber under it, which extinct volcanoes do not.
La Garita and Wah Wah are long since dead, and seismic studies show there is no molten material beneath either. Neither caldera has been active in over 25 million years.
The whole voice over ruined the video, it's too fast, I needed to catch my breath 5 minutes in. Also would a computer generated voice really mis pronounce " volcano" if it does you need a better program. Otherwise excellent presentation.
The subject makes it obvious that for humanity to strive for a long term presence in history we may need to populate a few places other than just Earth perhaps the moon and Mars or an unique space station like a giant ball or a ball connected by belts in circles multiple stories thick set in a Lagrange point for an easy as a orbit possible while within distance of asteroid made of mostly of metal. I believe this can happen if a more unified effort by humanity can happen, perhaps with democracy in Russia and China is all it will take as long as one of few instant natural disaster does not interrupt.
My money is on an eruption of some magnitude in Yellowstone it might not be as cataclysmic as most fear but given the fact that the area experiences an uptick in seismic activity every year, and a measurable amount of groundswell, as well as the fact that a lava dome is growing on the bottom of Yellowstone lake says to me that at the very least a Mount Saint Helen's type eruption or smaller may occur during our lifetime.
I don't think the word "volcano" is even in the bible. But "earthquakes" is in there, and there is reference to all mountains and islands being moved. Something like a burning mountain being tossed into the sea. I've heard speculation that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was volcanic. I sure hope we are near the end. This world is getting too whack for me.
I would say Yellowstone. With the major food production areas of the USA and Canada right there and how tied in the American economy is to the world it erupting would start a worldwide depression that would fundamentally change the world for a very long time.
If Apolaki explodes, it would be more devastating than Yellowstone since it's 150km in diameter and is located deep in the Pacific ocean. It would cause tsunamis a few kilometers high.
@@pattrickmerete Apolaki is large but not a supervolcano. Yellowstone had larger eruptions than Apolaki. Apolaki formed from major effusive eruptions not an explosive eruption

@@joeswartz8286 The geological record from the the lava, (mostly basalt), shows that the earth does indeed have more than enough material, in places the deposits are miles thick. Also, the earth does not lose any material, it stays right here, and eventually gets pulled into the earth again through subduction. The earth still has a hot, dense core, ensuring that earth will continue this 'recycling' process for many millions of years.
there is also the indian trapps as well, they bang on about yellowstone but lake taupo which is a lot bigger, also italy has one major supervolcano its what feeds etna and the rest of the others
I live in Eastern Washington State on over a mile of basalt that was once over what is now the Yellowstone hotspot.

Well I learned a couple of things from this video...
"Volano" is pronounced "VOL kuh noe" and 'idea" is pronounced "ideer"... There were numerous other abominations of the English language as well. I don't know how I survived so long saying these words incorrectly. My life is complete now. Foo too rey By tee gets a thumbs down for using a computer generated voice.

Very early on in this video you state that Papua New Guinea is part of Indonesia, and show a map of the whole island.
In fact only the western half of the island is part of Indonesia, and is called Irian Jaya. The western half of the island is the independent nation of Papua New Guinea.
It's really a small point but how do you think Americans would react to being told their country is actually part of Canada?
Actually Yellowstone the largest super volcano
It is PAPUA BARAT (WEST PAPUA), invaded by Suharto, then held sham referendum which only about a third of the tribal chiefs voted, most voting "yes" to being part of Indonesia after being bribed with gifts of machete, cooking pots, etc. This is why OPM have been fighting for freedom. Suharto also had many parts of Indonesia in Civil War, as he was corrupt & authoritarian. His son in law, Prabowo led the Invasion of Timor Leste. He must never be allowed to be President.
😂I laugh at this comment. indonesian here.
Richard, the EASTERN part of the island is Papua New Guinea!

Toba is the big one I think, but which onegoes off and when makes the difference really
This is possibly the best Documentary Yet on the future of Volcanism.
Even within the category of volcano related ways of life, they are all different, for example like Japan, Hawaii, and Indonesia, many of us are living around volcanoes and yet our ways of life are different.
The more you know.
Cheers folks!

I sure hope it doe not happen
i gotta say opening with the calm waters of lake Toba was a bold move
There are no volcanoes there everything has been destroyed since the last eruption leaving only the beautiful lake toba
I have a feeling Human civilization has gone almost extinct quite a few times.. it would explain why there's so much history on earth from us humans.. past technology ect..
Informative and interesting video but the mechanical voice was distracting because it was so monotone and didn't pronounce some words properly.
I’d have to say that the Yellowstone volcano is more powerful because they are predicting that it has somewhere in the neighborhood of about 2800 kilometers of eruptable magma
We'll argue about this again once Yellowstone really erupt.
Actually any yellowstone eruption were smaller than 75k bc of toba

Please don't happen.
I hope Yellowstone goes off soon. Imagine - All corruption and perversion gone in a short time.......
Yellowstone isn't likely to go off any time soon, despite how many people rave about it, so you don't have to worry about that.

Earthquakes all over the world lately. Even in the Midwest United States. Something is going on beneath our feet. 🌋
California feels it vibrating and very hot air under our feet. Big booms under ground
The heat blowing up from ground if getting unbearable.
I felt a lot of earthquakes when I lived in Alaska but I moved to California and haven’t felt anything yet aside from the unbearable heat. I can’t feel any earthquakes here though.
This gives credence to my theory about the so called Earth changes .
Look for the volcano tax. Someone has to make a buck off it….

Cheers.
Ty for the honest and thoughtful feedback! :)
I just assumed it's a computer voice..
Computers are less costly than humans, but as always the quality of service is terrible. ( Phone companies, Healthcare , education, electricity distribution, transportation production, etc..etc..etc...oh what a mess we humans can weave ! Like asking R2D2 how it feels . 😡💯😓🤮🤔😲

Going to use a bit of dark humor here and say that a bit of volcanic winter probably wouldn’t hurt atm
Kra-kotto and Vulcan-o. Uranium decays into leed. That computer almost sounds human but it has some problems.
Is it trying to say Krakatoa?
Big Blue needs to work on its diction.
Cool video. My head exploded though with all those numeric equivalents.
When the ice starts melting, like now, its weight starts pressing down, the volcanoes start up. Just imagine how powerful the volcanoes will be in just a few short years. And, how high the tides will be, and how flooded the coastal areas will be.
And the real amazing thing is despite all that people will still be voting republican.

There are 127 volcanoes in Indonesia which 69 of them are active. Please check on Sinabung volcano eruptions if it has any relations or effect on the sleeping Toba volcano.
Why can’t we drill into them to release pressure so it doesn’t erupt? I have no idea just asking?
That may seem outlandish, but it could be a minor "band-aid" solution in reducing gases of supervolcanoes - given how it historically has been proposed at places like Yellowstone. Though this would never be able to end "pressure," since that isn't really how volcanoes erupt.
The eruption itself releases pressures. We are dealing with super duper daddies here which remain beyond the feeble actions of our technology.
Drilling in may actually trigger the eruption.
I don't think I would want to be the one operating the drill.
They tried that long ago in Atlantis but it didn't work as expected, i believe.
I live in Sumatera, probably almost close to toba. So if there is any chance the eruption back, it's really gonna be a bad dream.

Lol! Humanity?
My money is on an eruption of some magnitude in Yellowstone it might not be as cataclysmic as most fear but given the fact that the area experiences an uptick in seismic activity every year, and a measurable amount of groundswell, as well as the fact that a lava dome is growing on the bottom of Yellowstone lake says to me that at the very least a Mount Saint Helen's type eruption or smaller may occur during our lifetime.
Worry about Lake Taupo in NZ!
Be careful you might trigger the global climate alarmists into thinking that exploding of volcano of this size to be beneficial
Toba is the giant.
Yellowstone is a pimple in comparison.
I knew this 30+ years ago, and nothing has changed my mind on the matter.
Volcanoes and eruptions are indicated as end time events.
This world is getting too whack for me.
watching this while living in Indonesia
So do we try to help Yellowstone have a few small releases to make the damages less?
When the volcano 🌋 that sleeps for million of years blows the sign will be given Amen
I would say Yellowstone. With the major food production areas of the USA and Canada right there and how tied in the American economy is to the world it erupting would start a worldwide depression that would fundamentally change the world for a very long time.
If Yellowstone blows America is done for sure
Toba would eject much more volcanic gasses and affect much more people in an instant. Remember how many live in South East, South, and East Asia?
If Apolaki explodes, it would be more devastating than Yellowstone since it's 150km in diameter and is located deep in the Pacific ocean. It would cause tsunamis a few kilometers high.
@@pattrickmerete Apolaki is large but not a supervolcano. Yellowstone had larger eruptions than Apolaki. Apolaki formed from major effusive eruptions not an explosive eruption

Doesnt the chemical type of local 'earth' it (magma/melts) determine the type of gasses go into the air?
Yes it depends on magmatic composition but mostly what other elements it mixes with, especially if the magma interacts with water which in turn flashes to steam releasing different types of gasses
