Dark chocolate has gained a health food reputation, but is the hype too good to be true? Is it possible that a daily dose of something so delicious can improve cognitive function and heart disease risk? Let’s take a look at the science - both the studies and how they were funded - and let’s take on the question of how most dark chocolate products are processed and what that means in terms of health.

This is very clear click bait and bad research. The Superfood aspect is cacao. Raw(ish) chocolate with zero sugar.
Sugar is not a Superfood. If you add sugar to a "Superfood", it's not a Superfood.
Cacao is one of the most antioxidant foods and IS good for cardiovascular health.
Sugar and candy is not and if you believed it enough to make this video, you're not really trying .
Its 2021.. cacao is not some "new" food anymore.
Cacao is not "seriously bitter". It takes like coffee without sugar and milk and tastes good. Stop trying to scare people away from one of the most healthy food sources on tbe planet.
Chocolate is a superfood. There is high quality research. This is not high quality research. This is deceptive.

Why did you pick such unhealthy dark chocolates? I eat 90% dark chocolate with very little added sugar. It might not be as good as eating an avocado, but I use it as a substitute for unhealthy snacks. Also, I really enjoy the taste of dark chocolate. VERY few people have perfect self-control and an important part of constructing a healthy diet is finding healthier alternatives that you actually can stick to. If eating 80%+ dark chocolate makes you cut back on milk chocolate, cookies, candy etc. then it really is a "super food" that will do wonders for your health. As an added bonus the cocoa content *might* be good for you.

It’s definitely not a Snickers Bar, but it’s not bad. This seems more like a hit pice on dark chocolate rather than a rational examination. First off a 1 Oz serving of 90% cocoa dark chocolate has just 3 grams of sugar. A one ounce pice is almost as big a your palm. Then he tries to say all positive studies done on dark chocolate were funded by chocolate manufacturers, but quickly throws in that other studies done that weren't funded by them also found positive results, but for some reason don't count for anything because chocolates bad no mater what to this guy. Then he flat out says the flavanals/antioxidants found in dark chocolate are healthy even though he said the studies that showed they were didn't count for some biased reason! His only counter to this is that some chocolate makers process their chocolate with alkali which destroys about half the antioxidants. This is why I buy dark chocolate that states that it wasn't processed with alkali. So if you buy dark chocolate this has a high cocoa content, isn't processed with alkali, and eat in moderation the science supports that this is a healthy and tasty choice!

Worked for a chocolate company over 20 years. That percentage they use includes both the solids (the part with the flavonols) and the cocoa butter (the fats from the bean). There are no rules about how much of each, so one 90% could have half fats and half solids and the next 30/70. To be legally 'white chocolate' something must have a certain percentage of cocoa butter, no solids in there so it's just the fats with sugars etc. Baking chocolate also called chocolate liquor is 100% solids, if there's any benefit that's where it would be, but super bitter.

TLDR: Because that's how we roll (not defending it, just stating a fact).
Some of the very dark chocolates have more reasonable sugar content, but unfortunately people here like high sugar/fat in their products. Moderation isn't really a thing products are designed around, and telling Americans not to do stuff is a great way to encourage them to do it anyway.
Social/personal responsibility are in short supply here, so companies will do it because they can get better sales, and Americans will buy it because they don't care about the costs/consequences.

Couple that with changing information and misleading marketing such as using "corn syrup" instead of "sugar" that use health trends to prey on people's ignorance, and you've got a have your cake and eat it too situation.

When they say "dark chocolate is healthy" they mean 100% baking chocolate. When they say "dark chocolate is a superfood" they mean unprocessed cacao nibs (or powder).
    Cacao is *unprocessed.*
    Cocoa is *processed.*
The easiest way to reduce tannins in *anything* is to use salt. Salt it until you can't taste the bitter anymore. Much easier than adding sugar to the same effect.

This is crazy. People say dark chocolate but in reality it is CACAO which is the foundation of what makes dark chocolate that is extremely healthy and can be considered a super food. Humans look to go the lazy route and want to buy a candy bar which is crap. Buy the powder or the cacao nibs and make your own dark hot chocolate drink 2 times a day and reap the benefits.

It is a bit bitter for the first time, but you get used to it (especially if you cut all sugar from your diet and get occasional cravings like I do). For anyone curious, a lindt 95% dark chocolate bar I have here says it has 1 gram of sugar per 4 squares (so 2 grams for a full 8 square bar).
However it's saturated fat content is 112% of your daily intake for the full bar. Not that anyone should be eating it in one sitting.
1 bar also apparently has 40% of your daily fiber, as well as 30% iron, and 4% calcium. Apparently 8 grams of protein.
Just listing these because I happened to have one on my desk. *shrug*

I dislike the implied blanket attack on fat.
Since there are only three sources of calories (fats, protein, and carbohydrates), demonising one is risky. Also, of the three, only two contain essential nutrients: fat and protein. If you must paint with such a wide brush, please paint on carbohydrates. At least cutting carbohydrates won't kill you.
The way I see it you need:
5% fat in your diet, or you die of fat deficiency, (sometimes called protein poisoning or rabbit starvation). (I don't know how long this will take, a healthy person is probably fine for months)
10% protein in your diet, or you die of protein deficiency. (I don't know how long this will take either, a healthy person is probably fine for months)
Fill the remaining 85% of your needed calories however you want, it won't kill you unless you are doing it consistently for decades. Maybe filling the remaining 85% with only sugar might kill you sooner, don't do that. (tongue in cheek tip: Keep your diet's sugar content below 85%.)
To get your other essential nutrients (vitamins and minerals) to the level of not dying I'd say you need to eat at least a piece of fruit once a month, and at least one vegetable once a week.
As always more variation increases the quality of your life.
These are minimum levels, not targets. More variation probably also increases your long term survival, but to make it to the age of 50, my rules are good enough. I'm willing to bet that 80% of healthy people reach the age of 50 by following my diet rules. Which is good enough since we don't know enough about nutrition to be a lot more specific than that.
P.S. All this is on average, don't stress yourself out.

I have only recently started consuming dark chocolate, and the one I'm consuming (I'm using the word consuming deliberately because I've realised I can't eat them directly) contains zero sugar and 99% cocoa. I put 2-3 pieces of chocolate (approx 25-35grams) in boiled dairy whitener and add minimal amount of sugar to make it all "drinkable". Also the benefit of *really* dark chocolate is that I wouldn't even think eating ~134g ("4.75oz") at once or even in a day. That's more consumption on the scale of 1 or 2 weeks at best.
