Thank you! I see so many people saying how you need a load of fancy stuff and paints when you just start out, it was good to go back to basics and show that these new starter sets are ideal for someone just starting out in the hobby
Thank you so much for your videos, I bought the introductory set and just finished my first Tyranid following your tutorial. Your way is so much better than the way Games Workshop shows how to do it in the book that comes with the introductory set.
Thank you! Welcome to the Hobby! I'm glad the guide was helpful, some of the GW paint guides they give with models aren't the most useful, so I'm happy that my one helped you out!
That was one of the best tutorials for just using the starter set painting I have seen !? Two very meaty thumbs up. Also a sub too!? Now to check out your other videos. Keep up the good work!
I hate that myth as well. Rattle cans are quick and easy, but if someone is starting out or is only painting a single model, then a good solid base coat is all you need. It's just a layer, so the other paints have something to "stick" to rather than just plastic.
I just started with this set as my first set. This has given me so many ideas for mine. Thank you so much. I was stressing that I needed to go buy more paints first before they can look really good but your tutorial showed me even as a new painter I can get an excellent result.
The only things I recommend getting are a cheap set of brushes, so you have more variety in sizes (smaller ones make highlights easier, larger ones make basecoats a lot quicker). Eventually you'll find what extra colours you need to save mixing paints all the time, but the most important thing is just time, the more you paint, the better results you will be able to achieve.
Thank you very much I just finished my first 3 tyranids. They are not as beautiful as yours but I am still very happy with the result and I would never have been able to achieve this quality without your tutorial
I'm glad I could help! Keep on painting, the more you paint, the more comfortable you become with everything and the better the end result. But also always make sure you keep your first models somewhere, every few years it's great to look back at them and see how far your painting has come.
extremely informative video, very engaging and ending with such a beautiful product is a feat in itself, with just the starter colours. I will be using this when I start my tyranids!!
I like that it has the blue and purple, back in the day when I played Dawn of War there was a colour scheme in the Tyranid mod called Hive Fleet Harbinger which had purple flesh and dark blue shells and I always thought it looked really cool. Was really happy with how it turned out when I painted it myself.
I bought this set and finished my first model, using this tutorial. Thank you. It was super helpful. I cannot wait to finish my first space marine (which just needs highlights) following your other tutorial.
I'm so glad I could help! I hope you've enjoyed painting your first models! If ever you are thinking of expanding your collection and getting some other models you want some ideas for how to paint, let me know!
I bought a Leviathan box yesterday. Maybe a few different colour combo's of termagaunt would be nice. But other than that, I'm just enjoying your spacemarine videos and learning to paint (with my starter kit).
I've been getting into Underworlds recently and want to paint my models, I'm glad I've finally found a video using the kit I'm looking at for practice and using only the stuff in it (sans the model holder) Thanks for showing even an amateur that's never held a brush before can do a decent job
Thank you! With a little practice and some patience, you should be able to paint models you are happy with pretty quickly. The only thing I would say to get is a cheap pack of brushes from amazon or your local hobby store. It's good to have a few different sizes around, but with cheap ones, when they get ruined or too hooked, you can just throw them away and get some new ones. Welcome to the hobby, and have fun painting the Underworlds models, they are some really nice looking minis.
finaly after about 4 other tutorials for the starter set using things that are not in the starter box here is finaly one thats only useing the starter set and nothing else THANK YOU i am just starting colecting never painted anything and between zero expirience and a language barrier i have no idea what a drybrusch even exaktly is ( used in gw guide) so just thanks
Thank you! Welcome to the hobby! Hopefully, you enjoy painting painting your first minis! There are quite a lot of videos out there that use a lot of advanced techniques and equipment ( the number of videos that will tell you that you "need" an airbrush or wet pallette is crazy), but its possible to achieve good results with just practice, a few paints and basic equipment. Please let me know how you get on with painting your first models!
This was a fantastic tutorial! Definitely need to practice my brush control to get the edge highlighting right (and on my patience to spend more time tidying up next time), but your technique for the makeshift shade definitely helped make up for my lack of experience/skill!
Thank you! Practice really is the key. You'll quickly pick up muscle memory with a brush, and the edge highlights become a lot easier and more even. Shades (even makeshift ones) really do make painting so much easier. There is a reason people call nuln oil "talent in a bottle"
If i want to make a few of those with body red ( i bought a blood angel paint) and carapace wraithbone? How would you make the lines on it to stand out like you did?
The blood angles red paint is a contrast paint, so painting it over the wraitbone base coat should do the job of shading a highlights for you. For the wraithbone carapace, if you do the highlight lines with a pure white (like white scar) it will give you the same highlight effect
Great video, kept it simple with verbal instructions etc, just what I was looking for as a complete beginner. I will go ahead and purchase the set now. 👍👍
Just bought the starter set today and saw this tutorial by chance. Amazing guide, I will definitely try to paint my Termagants this way. I will check the Infernus Marines tutorial too. Liked and Subscribed. Great job mate.
Thank you! The limited colours wasn't too bad, the worst thing was only using a starter brush. It's quite hard to edge highlight using such a chunky brush
@MrWizzard001 do it! They come in most starter paint sets, or if you ask in a GW store they will probably just give you one as the starter brushes aren't for sale
Since I didn't buy a Spray Can to prime my mini (I didn't see a point in spending £15 just for a single model since I don't even know if I'll be painting more) I decided to follow yours and the GW guide on on basing with a brush. Followed both videos making sure to water down the paint, got 5 minutes into priming it, hated it so washed off the paint and I've given up trying to paint miniatures
I'm sorry to hear that! Priming is the worst part of painting miniatures. I completely get why you wouldn't want to get a can of primer if you are new to the hobby. Once the undercoat is down, the rest of the process is a lot more enjoyable. Hopefully, one day you'll decide to give it another go.
Excellent video! I’ve only got into Warhammer since lockdown and still learning a lot. For a small channel this video is excellent. Subscribed to you mate 🙌
For the Tyrandis, I would recommend Warpfiend grey for highlighting the chitin, carrabourg crimson shade paint for the allover wash for the body (It's much easier than making your own every time) and if you want the traditional Tyranid look I would also get Mephiston red for painting the gun and claws instead of using the blue
This is really good! How much time does it takes? Im trying to be table top ready as soon as I can with my tyranids army but I think I can just start doing all white and purple for starting and adding the details after whenever I have time
Thank you! This model took me just over an hour, but there are ways to make it quicker. Having all of the shade and highlight colours as actual paints rather than mixing them each time will save quite a while. Also, batch painting 5-10 models at once will be a lot quicker, as you don't have to wait for colours to dry, by the time you paint a detail on the last model, the first one is dry and ready to paint again. I would recommend painting at least some details on your models. One thing I've learnt is that painters very rarely ever go back to models to add details. There are always new models to paint, so people never have the time to go back. Even if you don't go all the way to painting eyes and edge highlighting everything, add a shade to the skin, and some highlights on the carapace, at least that way they will read a lot better on the tabletop and hold up against models you buy later and do paint all the extra details.
Thank you! I haven't done Hive Fleet Kraken yet. You would need to add a red to the colours in the starter set for Kraken. Pretty much swap out the purple for red on all the carapace, and it will be pretty close to Kraken. I have been doing a series where I paint different models with only 5 paints, I've done Space Marines, eventually I'll get around to painting all the Hive Fleets with just 5 paints as well.
There isn't a primer in the starter set. Normally, I would recommend priming in white, but if you don't have any primer, you can just brush on a base paint, it just needs to fully dry before layers. In this one I'm using a "pallette pad" by Games Workshop, its just sheets of gloss coated paper that you can use to thin and mix paints, but anything that's flat and non absorbant will work
Great video! Just bought my starter kit today. And this video was incredibly helpful. Got your self a new sub right here mate. Are you going to do one on Space Marines as well?
Cheers mate! I am planning of doing a video for how to paint the Space Marines as Salamanders. But I could also do one for how to paint them using just the starter set colours.
I can do an Ultramarine video, I've painted up a lot of Ultramarines over the years so I should be able to give a beginner tutorial. Would you like just the 5 starter paints, or using a few more paints?
@@DrunkOnTeaUK Some more would be Nice. The colors i have are Leadbelcher, bugmans glow, Balthasar gold, Armageddon dust, Magos purple, Mephisto red, agarax earthshade, thunderhawk blue. And the for base colors you used in the Tyrranid video.
Are you using the brush inside the box? Im having hard times highlighting the carapace with it…feels like my lines are too thick or the paint wont apply…
For this one I am using the starter brush that comes in the box. The brush is quite large, so to apply the highlights just put a little bit of paint on the brush, and only apply light pressure. In the Space Marine video I recommend picking up a cheap set of brushes, then you'll have some smaller tips for applying highlights.
Can you do one like this but for every leviathan box model? I’m real poor after buying it and I got no paints and no idea of what to do, it’s my first ever box and I don’t want to ruin it. Plz help.
I've made a video for how to paint the Space Marines using the same starter set paints. With most of the models being very similar, you can easily copy the colours for skin and carapace (or power armour) over to every model in the box. But it wouldn't recommend trying to paint them all like this, you'll slowly go insane mixing colours for every model and it will take forever. I have a video on how to paint Tyrandis using a few more paints, that can easily be copied across all the models in Leviathan and would save you a lot of time and effort mixing highlight and shade colours.
I've started preparing for it today. If I can get it filmed, edited, and sorted in time, it will be this Saturdays video, if not, next week at the latest
I was going to paint up the Marines as Salamander, but if people want to see the Marines painted up with just the starter colours, I could paint one up in Ultramarine colours.
You can fix this pretty easily. Drybrush on some Wraithbone over the skin areas, and it will bring the raised parts back to a cream colour and leave the purple in the in all the details.
As long as there is a solid coat of the base paint, there doesn't tend to be a big issue with chipping. Before spray primer was a common thing, everyone used to undercoat by just painting on white paint. Primer is quicker, easier, and less likely to clog up any details, but you can just paint on an undercoat if needed.
Very well done. But i feel sorry for every soul, that would paint 10 or 20 tyranids like this. For everyone who is starting a tyranid army. Get a sprey or airbrush, because this bone color has very bad coverage.
I would never recommend anyone paint a whole army like this. I was just using the contents of the new starter set. Someone's first model when this is all they have, very quickly people build up their hobby equipment. I have a video showing how to paint up a Tyranid using a full range of colours and a spray primer to undercoat.

A very nice tutorial that makes the most of the starter set and shows you don't need 100+ paints in your collection

I really love that you show a proper base coat. I’m sick of the myth that you have to ‘prime’ a model
