  • Friends, followers, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from www.HaveWindWillTravel.com! A real treat for you here, available for the first time to my entire audience: my two-hour movie from our trans-Atlantic. For those of you who are new, Phillip and I had the good fortune to be invited as part of a four-member crew to cross the Atlantic, sailing from Florida to France, this past June on a 46’ catamaran and I created my first full-length film documenting our journey. I thought it would be a great way to kick off Season Five of our UA-cam channel which will be all about our TRAVELs, with our biggest voyage of 2016!
    When Captain Yannick first met me (which was around the same time he agreed to let me make this tremendous voyage with him, brave guy), he had no idea who I was really, the kind of videos I made, my audience or how I might portray him and his family on film and, because he has plans to produce video documentaries of his own someday, he initially asked that I not share the movie publicly on UA-cam. Now, after having watched many of my videos, particularly the movie itself, and with a better understanding of the purpose of my platform (i.e., to help share the realities and rewards of a cruising lifestyle) Yannick graciously granted my renewed request to let me share it with my entire audience, for free on UA-cam.
    So, kick back, make some hot cocoa, round up the last of the Christmas treats and enjoy the show while Phillip and I explore the vast historic castles, churches and smoky cigar holes in Cuba and work to get videos to you all from this incredible adventure as well as my sail to Isla Mujeres, Mexico this past November and our upcoming sail to Miami in February for the Miami Boat Show (we hope to see some of you there!). Thank Captain Yannick for inviting Phillip and I on this incredible voyage and letting me share the experience with you: a crew of four on a 46’ foot catamaran, thirty days at sea across the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect way to kick-off HaveWindWillTravel 2017!

    Exciting news! Captain Yannick and his family are now making videos of their own adventure on s/v Andanza. He and his family have sailed in northern Europe, crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and explored various islands in the Caribbean on their way to the states. Keep the adventure going by subscribing and following Yannick's channel at ua-cam.com/channels/dsWzTt-wKTUWoWcpcf6ISA.html.

    A good movie about a trans Atlantic voyage. The Azores section was my personal favorite. The stuff that wears out and fails or comes close to failure is thoughtful. Considering a voyage? Watch this more than once. It combines fun and resilience beautifully. (I have a few of those trips under my belt and admire Annie's work.) Norm on Averisera

    Just finished watching the movie and it was simply spectacular. You did such a marvelous job of capturing the high and low points and bringing us right along with you as if we were actually sailing with the crew on the boat. Your dedication to the craft of producing these fine videos shines through. I have been following along with you for quite some time now, including your DeLorme posts on your Cuban adventure. I can't wait until we all get to share that with you as it sounds like you have been having a simply marvelous time. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and want to with you a Happy New Year. I watched with such good feelings for you all. Emotion made my body shudder, at times, remembering my own seafaring adventures. I smiled, for all the things only those of us who have lived the magic, can feel; catching a glimpse of each other, that knowing magic in the eyes saying - yup, there goes another friend, who has been where we have been, and knowing - truly learning - that the ocean | the sky | the magical sunrises and sunsets, bending around the curved earth - knowing that in that grand nirvana, we are subject to her will; her desires, her mercies - and if we respect her, she will bless us with new and endless journeys.
    Yours was beautiful to watch and experience. Thank you for being you, and letting me come along for the ride. Job well done!

    Love watching your videos while I'm prepping for my own voyage in my cabin in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I spent the last two years restoring a Bristol 24 Corsair. Had planned on sailing along the coast down to the Caribbean, however being a geologist I could not help but notice that there is a lot of seismic activity going on in the plates along PR. Maybe the maiden voyage will be Bermuda or Nova Scotia!

    You all are definitely 'real' sailors, now. That was an amazing trip, and since you traveled more than 1,000nm, non-stop, you're qualified to join ---either as crew or on your own boat --- OCC (Ocean Cruising Club, which I believe was started in UK). Membership fee is reasonable and they fly special "flying fish" flags, as I recall...With 9 days in the Azores, did Yannick also have the spinnaker re-stitched? Having a sewing machine onboard can sometimes be as essential as a watermaker or autopilot but you all had an amazing journey and thanks for sharing...

    • @HaveWindWillTravelcom
      @HaveWindWillTravelcom  7 років тому

      Hi Don! Thanks. Folks have told us about the OCC before. We've considered it, have just been so busy planning for or voyaging more to really focus on whether we need the benefits it affords (as we do try to watch our pennies). The Atlantic-crossing was definitely an eye-opening, incredible adventure. Capt. Yannick did not have the spinnaker re-stitched while in the Azores. The starboard engine, auto-pilot and generator completely occupied him there! ; ) Thanks for watching!

      ...and we did have a sewing machine:) The almighty Sailrite Ultrafeed. Just not a priority and to be honest a personal lack of knowledge on how to use it on such a light fabric as the spinnaker's...

  • @kamel6915
    @kamel6915 4 роки тому

    Lessons:
    1. Always have spare halyards. There is usually enough space in the mast and you never know what they can be useful for.
    2. Have some spare quality rope on board. In this case it could have been used to support the broken shrouds.
    2a. Learn some knots not common on sailing: Blake, Prusik (or it's modern alternatives)...
    maybe you will not get your mast perfectly straight with ropes and knots but you can definetly prevent it from falling.
    3. Check your shrouds and stays regularly.
    4. F**k stainless steel. There are good stainless steels, but they are rare (and magnetic). For the standard (austenite) ones like 1.4301 (not sea water resistant but very common for tea cans and pots and so on) or 1.4401 (AISI 316) (sea water resistant) there is good reason why they are not used in engineering if they are not necessary. For anything made of those steels, have an eye on it back it up and replace when in doubt.
    5. Cable clamps and some spare cable can also bee nice to have. Keep in mind you need more than 1 cable clamp to make a connection. There are tables for that. Spare cable with clamps can be cheaper than comparable rope.

      Hey JJ. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed our movie. It was definitely an incredible experience making that trip with Captain Yannick on his impressive boat. I would say "cruising" is almost a full-time life for me now. I definitely do not go to an office and put in 9-5 anymore (although some days I put in more!) I work from a laptop now wherever I can get a wifi connection and Phillip is also working toward being able to travel more in the next couple of years. So, we're kind of cruisers in progress right now. Re: retirement, I have a small pot from when I was working as a lawyer, definitely not much and we try to save as we go along (just as I would if I was working UNTIL retirement age) but it honestly hasn't bothered me too much to not put so much time and effort into it now. Heck, I may not live till retirement age. Who knows. We try to be fiscally conservative and plan ahead as much as possible, but we are also very focused on living in the now and doing the things we have always wanted to do NOW, while we are young and healthy. With the law degree (which I keep in good standing) I can always sit at a desk and practice law when I'm 60.

    Have looked around nobody seems to have a quick fix for Stays. But I had this problem underway once and did a strong fast quick fix because the cable was popping pretty fast. Took four Ubolt cable clamps and a peace of cable and clamp so the break was in between. Yes there was no adjustment for tighting but I had it there for more than two weeks sailing very heavy on it. Just by luck I had these parts for something else I was thinking of and after that encounter always made sure I had several setups.

      Wow, very helpful. Thank you. We definitely felt there was too much movement in the shrouds that we wanted to stop. It proved detrimental for the wires in the rigging. Lucky for you for having the parts on hand.

    I´ve just finished watching the video.. What a TRIP guys!!!! Full of everything, nice weather, incredible sunsets, some huge waves, a lot of wind and surfing. Great ship, looks very comfortable. Several problems with the gear but everything went well, doesn’t look you suffer too much. Although the best part is the filming, the edition and the jokes and Annie’s and Phillip’s occurrences, they really add a lot to the video. Great crew, everybody had a lot of work to do, including the fisherman!!!! Fresh sushi crossing the Atlantic? No way!!! I think both the video and he trip have everything that both you and we can ask about. Fantastic piece of work, it is not the first long passage I watch, but can tell you it is the best so far. Thanks a lot Annie for giving us the chance to share this incredible experience. Too bad you had to take a plane back home, couldn’t find any other vessel? Hahahaha. Cheers and thanks guys. Jorge - Buenos Aires- Argentina.

      I know, right? Phillip and I joked that we would try to serve as crew coming back west across the Atlantic for the trip home. I can easily tell you both of us would have loved to. We were in no way tired of being out there on blue water. It was primarily Phillip's work obligations that required us to come home in a "quicker" fashion. But, we were lucky he was able to take the time off to make the trip with us. What an incredible ride, huh? I'm so glad you got to watch the movie and enjoyed it. I definitely tried to capture the "reality" of the experience, both the highs and lows. And, it was a very spacious, comfortable boat. Other than the bashing ... Thanks again Jorge. So glad you enjoyed the film!

    You’re a great narrator. Great film. I wish I’d seen where you put all that food! And what you got. I felt the pain you experienced as things went wrong. Passage making is just a way to fix your boat under dreadful conditions in strange places, sometimes in no places. You had extraordinarily good weather. I wonder how the boat would do in 40 foot breaking waves in 40 kt winds. I’d be afraid. Congratulations.

    Thank you so much for documenting your trip. I was glued to the tv screen hanging on every word and every deep blue roller that you caught on camera. MY dream is to get a sail boat and take long trips and i see that all of you have the same dream. I dont think I will ever be able to get a ship like the cat you all took across the Atlantic. I must say that is a beautiful work of art from bow to stern. Phillip you are a lucky man to have such an elegantly beautiful wife. Annie I enjoyed seeing and hearing all of the laughter that you brought to the video and Im sure to your crew. I hope that when I finally get my boat that i am blessed with a wife as beautiful and uplifting as you seemed to be in this video. Im looking forward to seeing a video of you twos boat. Thanks again for the video i enjoyed it and you did a very good job.

    I just finished watching the entire video and I have to say that it was fascinating. The captain had originally planned to make the voyage by himself, how would he have dealt with all of the failures on the boat, especially the auto pilot on his own? The other thing I found interesting was his language, he sounded like an American when you left the US, but spoke broken English at the end of the video, I assume that was due to going back and forth from English to French.

    • @HaveWindWillTravelcom
      @HaveWindWillTravelcom  7 років тому +2

      I think he was just finally pulling away from the States and really looking forward to finally speaking his native language all the time. It always caught me off guard when he started speaking in French, as if he had become a different person. It definitely motivated me to want to learn a new language. Likely spanish first though. Thank you for watching William. There is no way to know what would have happened had Yannick made the trip alone or how he would have dealt with whatever problems would have arisen on that trip, but he was certainly prepared. Appreciate you watching!

      Remember there was a time with solo sailors and no technology... But for sure things were easier to deal with having my top notch crew onboard;) Note that my strategy for everything would have been way more conservative (i.e. leaving reefs on, not using the spinnaker, sailing farther away from traffic around Florida, etc.)

    Ok, so first things first, AMAZING! I am also reading your book "Salt of a Sailor" and I was blown away by how well you not only documented the trips, but how good you are at telling the story so it is interesting... I guess I expect every journey to be just 10-15 knots of wind and 2-4 seas or don't go out... :) I know you can't do that while you are crossing the ocean, or when you are on a schedule! I think too many other channels just show easy stuff. Thank you for the Highs and the Lows and how well you handled those lows with Yannick. In the book, the third bolt has just sheared off, and I think we are about to lose the dinghy.. :O OH NO! Great job with both!

    • @HaveWindWillTravelcom
      @HaveWindWillTravelcom  7 років тому +1

      Oh nooooo! Not the third bolt! There's only one left! Ha. I'm sure you've read beyond that point already. Wait till you see what happens to us in Carabelle, though, and how crazy Mitch reacts. That was such a fun story to write. Thank you for these kind words, Chase. It really means a lot as we do put a lot of time and effort into our content at HaveWindWillTravel. A lifestyle of travel, cruising and boat maintenance (ha! because that's half of it!) has been so rewarding for me and I love to share it with others. So proud to have you on board enjoying the journey! Thanks again!

    • @HaveWindWillTravelcom
      @HaveWindWillTravelcom  7 років тому +4

      Thanks Gramps. We were definitely motivated already to get our boat ready to go offshore buy the voyage with Yannick taught us a great deal about many aspects of voyaging for that period of time that we were unaware of before, like how many spares you truly need to carry, provisioning for that long, fighting exhaustion, checking systems, etc. We picked up many ideas and tips during the voyage that will helps us be better prepared for a crossing on our boat, likely in the next 2-3 years!

    • @Grandpacarlreacts
      @Grandpacarlreacts 7 років тому +11

      Sure life is always a lesson. Just don't wait to start moving because your waiting for the latest this or that. Get what you need and untie the lines. There are boat services all over the world. In fact you can get most things done a lot cheaper then you can in Florida. Especially the mostly labor type jobs. So many new cruisers get tied to the dock for too long. never leaving until they got every last thing they thought they needed for "safety". It is heartbreaking. I have seen friends who bought a boat and never left the bay. They fixed this, upgraded that. They moved aboard but never really went cruising. Be brave and head out. You can always fix stuff later.
