  • A size comparison overview of the Polish Poncho Lavvu Tent between sizes 2 and 3, the medium(size 2) and Large(size 3).
These are excellent Cold War Era canvas gear that just works, as ponchos and as a shelter.

Excellent informational video. I own six sets of size three Polish Ponchos. Five sets are put away for safe keeping. One set I modified with a skirt and zipper, I love it and just like yours, yes my FLAPS are inside, that's my choice! Which to me makes more sense. I think that the Polish Ponchos {Lavvus} are just an incredible piece of kit for all outdoors woodland back packing activities for all ages.

Thumbs up for the correct lavvu pitch! I see tons of youtubers pitch their lavvus inside out. BTW personaly I use bipod inside instead of a one center pole which I hate. Makes much more room inside.

It's not about space under pałatka. Sizing is important if you plan to wear pałatka... because it is poncho after all. Size in cm I - 160-170, II - 170-180, III - 180-190+

Great video. I have a size 2 lavvu. I'm 6ft and I fit pretty decent in it. I didn't use the pole. I hung it with parachute cord using a slipknot hanging it from a ridge line, and that really open up the space without having the pole. Great overview.

    Thanks for doing the measurements.
Its important to have the numbers and a solid visual comparison.
As others have mentioned in the comments, the size differences are to accommodate the different sized men who would be expected to wear these as ponchos...but are designed in a way that allows different sized ponchos to be combined without drastically affecting the resulting structure quality.
    It's a very clever design.
    Look at me go...
I didn't know any of that when I bought mine, its thanks to people like you that I know even that much now.

Nice video. I have 3 of these Polish setups which equals to 6 rain capes. I found a complete kit on Etsy. I also purchased 4 Polish rain capes, when they had them (no poles n stakes) on Varusteleka.com and got 3 mediums and 1 small. The DDR (East German/NVA) tent poles and stakes kit works with these. The wooden poles are the same length as the aluminum poles issued with the Polish kit. I made paracord loops to go through the bottom grommet eyelets so I can use the DDR tent stakes or any tent stake. If you get the DDR tent poles and stake kit maybe sand the wooden poles lightly and apply some boiled linseed oil to the wood.

Got a black nato version size 3. I admit it does not look much, but personally every cm is appreciated! I'm feeling the comfort of a few extra cms, when I lay on my Therm-A-Rest matt with XL. But for people, who check their weight in an extreme manner, size 2 might be more relevant. At least they find that version easier, cheaper and won't have to think they got an inferior version, I guess. Cheers!

I think the sizes are more so for the fact that you can use it as a poncho. So it's not about room but more so about wearing it. So tall people may be better off with a size 3 and shorter people may like a size 1 so it's not gonna drag when wearing it. This is my complete guess, but it makes sense.

For walks and hiking, I live in Ireland and it really likes to rain here, I was caught out yesterday. I think it would be great to keep this in my car, it's a fast solution for rain and a tent. i dont get why you and basically everyone on youtube set up the lavvu INSIDEOUT.
the flap around the neck area is a rain cape and is ment to be on the outside to provide extra water protection for you shoulders/body.
putting the rain cape inside of the shelter is wrong. just because you see others do it does not mean it is the right way.
thats like takeing the american poncho shelter and when you set it up, you make sure you put the outside faceing in, and the inside faceing the elements with the hood hanging down on the inside.
it makes no sence and your video spreads bad information.
but sadly, your video is just like almost all other lavvu videos on youtube. bad information.
its an easy fix, but still bad information that people 100% believe.

Why post such a toxic comment, especially when you are wrong.
As a poncho the flap should be worn on the inside. Canvas soaks up water and swells to waterproof it. Having the flap on the inside allows the solid piece of material on the outside which soaks up the water and the flap gives an extra layer of protection against water transfer on the shoulders.
It is also pitched this way in tent form also as the storm flaps on the arm holes keep the rain out.
If only you did some research before shooting your mouth off.

@@WildCampingNI i own 3 different lavvus in 2 different sizes (still looking for a seccond small one), and if takeing off a wet poncho and turning it inside out to set up as a tent makes sence to you, cool.
but i wouldnt want to sleep with an already wet surface up against me.

@@mikelong3389 I have 6 lol that means nothing. Wearing it with the flaps out as a poncho is a misconception. Do some research, it is the properties of canvas and how it soaks water up that means the flap in worn on the inside.

@@WildCampingNI the “flaps” your talking about is the rain cape right?
because historically, rain capes are on the outside.
