A duet between Betty Hutton and Martha Raye would have been a hoot!

OMG! Betty Hutton was brash and shrill, while Nat King Cole was smooth as glass. Who thought it would be a good idea to get those two together?

This is brilliant ... doing each others songs. The Supremes and the Andrew Sisters did the same sort of thing on the Sammy Davis Jr Show in 1966.

Dat Boi ...NAT "KING" COLE succumbed to lung cancer, after years of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day.

Thank you SO much for posting this, "Hutton Gluttons." This is truly priceless. They sure don't sing/perform like THIS any more. Beyond adorable they are.

they were soooo afraid of white women getting with black men that just a friendly hug or her even dancing and appearing on the show was like HELLLLLL NO

People today mostly won’t get the running gag in the first part that each one is discussing or singing the other person’s hit songs. And then they both think they should’ve suggested “Orange Colored Sky”, which in fact both had successfully recorded a few years earlier. After that comes “Anything You Can Do”, which Betty had performed memorably in the film “Annie Get Your Gun” in 1950.

Betty wore the same costume when she was the mystery guest on "What's My Line?"

That was neat. Though they were not allowed to hug each other. Some of the biggest Black entertainers like Nat King Cole could perform in the best venues with White entertainers in those days. But in many cases, they were not even allowed to have a dressing room, or they were given shappy closet space or something, and they couldn't eat at some of the same places as the White entertainers, or drink out of the same fountain and had separate restrooms. I'm sure Nat had to deal with a whole lot.

When this number started I feared that whatever they were going to do would be a mess since each one had a totally opposite personality and style from the other - Nat was calm, cool and smooth while Betty was notorious for her crazed uncontrolled energy. But it worked perfectly! The writers created something extremely clever and most enjoyable.

Betty was just about at the end of her frenetic behavior working and not looking ridiculous as it would later. These two are wonderful together, but the scene begs for them to hug or join each other arm in arm. Can't believe a black man could have his own show but wasn't allowed to embrace his white co-star?

Of course, just over a decade later, Petula Clark innocently touched Harry Belafonte's arm (corrigendum if this is not accurate), and that touched off a firestorm. In my opinion, without such a firestorm, there might not have been an 'All in the Family'. Think of it.

All In The Family was copied from the British TV show Till Death Us Do Part.

Too much masculine energy coming from Hutton.
    Little off putting.
