    高音の鋭さが弦楽器の音を忠実に再現されようとしていてそれが行われている。。。さすが須川先生としか言えない表現力です。

Can’t play this violin piece without circular breathing technique. Many top sax players can do this.

Sugawa can almost certainly circular breathe, he just chose not to here. Although why that is, I'm not sure...

This is terrible. If you can't play something, don't. I respect the guy, but if you put something out there like that then expect some criticism.

Blanket Starry I am a saxophone player and I understand what ur saying. Yeah a lot of saxophone pieces these days are CRAZY. They are super hard because of the range and extended technique. So many players(especially students) they always focus more on technique instead of playing musically. However, I can’t agree with you that this is terrible. Sugawa is fantastic and I love his playing. I do respect ur opinion but I just can’t agree with that.

I would like to know what you specifically think is off about his playing.

@@caseystern6616 I hope you are joking. Listen to any violinist playing this piece. Sugawa is clearly making musical choices to accommodate his less than adequate technique for this piece. I've never seen his fingers so tense before. Music, especially Bach, MUST be played the way the music requires. There are no excuses to change that. His arpeggios (to represent the original double/triple stops) are just played through without any regard to baroque style or thought about which notes of the double stops are more important than others. Listen to the "fast" passages around the 5 min 50 sec mark and beyond. It almost sounds like he is sight reading this. It is way under tempo and very clunky, and messy. Saxophonists are still...still...listening to other saxophonists to figure out where to set the bar, and the bar is very low. The music HAS to dictate the level of technique needed. This performance doesn't cut it.

Blanket Starry Unfortunately I agree. There’s a recording of him playing it at WSC which is much better than this one but still... isn’t clean and not what I’d expect from him. I just don’t think this piece lends itself to the sax and I’m not sure if it’s even possible to play some of the things both musically and cleanly. It’s a real shame as I usually have enormous respect and admiration for Sugawa’s playing

Magnífico. Como estudante de sax alto aos 50 anos pergunto-me: como pude demorar tantos anos para conhecer o apaixonante mundo da música? Simplesmente magnífico.

  • @lukeserrano62

It starts off very unstylistic with so much vibrato and just gets worse. In danger of totally falling apart at the arpeggios section (which is easy on violin, extremely difficult on sax) Any violinist watching this would just laugh. How long did Casals play the cello suites before he played them in public? I admire the ambition but I’d say get the cello suites perfect first before taking on the violin rep. We need to respect the music more.
