This might be one of the most anticipated Omnis ever. Great job
I was planning on buying this already, but seeing the book in depth and how beautiful it looks overall made this an instant purchase for me (and thankfully, I had birthday money to use). Your historical overview was incredibly helpful Omar, as was the in-depth spoiler section. I've been trying to collect/read the most important comic runs between both Marvel and DC, and this fits right in that alley.
That Leach DM Variant is ICONIC, definitely getting that one!
Indecisive over that or Kevin Nowlan one. Both gorgeous covers
KIMOTA!
Thank you for that history of Miracleman, and of the British comics. Omar knocking it out of the park.
I love your love of comics, Omar. Your enthusiasm and insightful appreciation is wonderful.
I bought the first issue of Warrior in 1982, and was hooked from the start, I've followed the story through all it's reprints, so this is my Sixth dip into this tale. It's my absolute favorite story of all time in any media. Finally after 40 years I get to read Gaiman's finale, and then Marvel are going to fold MM into the main Marvel Universe kinda like DC did with Dr Manhattan, I'm not sure that's a good idea, but I suppose Marvel have to recoup all the money they spent on lawyers to own the rights to MM.
Apart from having followed MM from the very beginning, like you did, since I’m from Italy and I got the first stories only in the early nineties, I feel exactly the same. Now in my fifties, sometimes I felt so sad I was maybe never gonna get to read the final stories of the only character I really cared about. I’m so glad it’s now going to happen. If Marvel needs to get money by introducing MM in their universe, so be it. If that’s the price to have Gaiman finish the story, that’s worth the price.
P
I would hope Marvel is smart enough to keep what Moore and Gaiman have produced as "Miracleman", and make Marvelman a separate character. Someone who is more wholesome and heroic, one who can be the Superman character they've long sought. Plus, there's more value in having alternates of the same character. Miracleman being a kind of shadowy reflection to the sunny disposition of Marvelman.
I love Moore's work on the character, it's just brilliant right down to its very conceit. Gaiman's work is a little iffy to me. I like the idea where they've taken Young Miracleman as a Third Way type of thinker, equally separate from the repressive utopia of Miracleman and the nihilistic hellscape of Kid Miracleman. I like that concept a lot, plucking a character from golden age stories and dropping him into Miracleman's dictatorship. It's probably more jarring for Dickie Dauntless than Miracleman's own rebirth into 1982 was.
But man, are we just going to ignore Miracleman kissing Young Miracleman? How is this supposed to be okay? I really thought we were going down the path of showing Miracleman as some kind of incestuous predator who had abused Johnny Bates and Dickie, and was now back trying the same thing with the returned Dickie. That would explain Bates' behavior a bit and also Dickie's reaction to the kiss. I don't know, but will there be some kind of resolution to a guy being encouraged by his wife to make a sexual advance on their underage ward because she thought he was gay? If that even is supposed to be the real issue from Miraclewoman's end. I just really hope this isn't some cute post modern nonsense encouraging that kind of thing as perfectly natural and acceptable. There needs to be a resolution to that, and hopefully it comes in the dark age
Such a great watch Omar. I appreciate how you go into the background for Miracleman. Didn't realise this character was the reason that made Captain Marvel name change to Shazam. I know nothing about this character. This omni looks gorgeous though.😯
This is NOT the reason why the original Captain Marvel is now known as Shazam.
The original Captain Marvel can still be called by his original name, but the name can't appear on the cover. And that's because Marvel created their own Captain Marvel and trademarked the name during the period between when Fawcett let the trademark lapse and DC started licensing the Fawcett characters.
As for why the original Captain Marvel now goes by Shazam, there are some people who believe that that's what the character is best known by today.
Class dismissed. 🤣
They did not change Captain Marvel's name Shazam because of this series. After DC sued the character out of publication in the 50's, Marvel secured the rights to the name by creating their own Captain Marvel in the 60's. When DC bought back the character in the 70s there was a stipulation that the character's name could not be used on the covers. It could be used on the interiors though. DC changed the name because a lot of people thought that Shazam was the character's name anyway. It had been used on both the Saturday morning live action & cartoon series.
I absolutely love this run. Mine is pre-ordered I'm buzzing it's finally here 🤯
Wow what a fantastic overview! Knew nothing about Miracleman, but always been curious, so this was absolutely fascinating. Might have to pick this up if I get a chance!
So pumped for this. Thank you for all that you do man. I need it right meow
T Posing on the cover, to assert his dominance
Thank you! I’ve been searching for a video like this for the past few days, as I have zero knowledge of Miracleman outside of a cursory idea about some of the legal issues regarding the character, and was thinking whether to pick up this omnibus, and this was exactly what I wanted. A decent overview, and clearly marked Spoilers towards the end, so I knew when to stop watching! Thanks for making that clear! Also appreciated the look at the spines of the dust jackets as I was torn between which cover to order as I like them all, but the spine on the Alan Davis one just swung it for me! Look forward to receiving this now, and will probably come back and watch the rest of the video after I’ve read it!
It’s an honor indeed! ❤🎉
Just got my shipment notification last week for this. Yesss!
Thank you for this, Omar. Can't wait to get my copy, probably the Alan Davis cover for me, such a tough choice.
This looks fantastic!
Thanks for the preview!
Stuck at home with covid, so I called my LCS asking them to pull a copy. Thanks, Omar.
Ah Jack, I hope you get better soon and the covid is not too severe🙂
Hope you feel better.
Wow, I didn’t realise that about half of the book is extras. That’s a lot of extras!
Looking forwards to this - I have it preordered. :)
Mine is currently on the way (should arrive tomorrow). Definitely my most anticipated book in 2022.
Can't wait to get this in the mail and re-read it! Also, can't wait for Neil Gaiman's Golden and Silver Age arcs to be released in omnibus as well
Marvel has just this week reprinted the first Gaiman hardcover they did in trade format as well
Wanted to say the same thing. The completionist in me won't be happy until they collect those :)
@@eagleal I saw the TPB but decided to wait for the omnibus! Hope my gamble pays off
random person who posted on this thread...
am deciding between versions of this. i have all the original eclipse trades, so the question comes down to price, format, and extras.
are the extras worth the extra 20-30$ US that i'd have to pay for it? hardcover format is good, yes, but what do I miss by getting one of the earlier formats wout the extras?
most of what Omar showed were pinups/covers, along w that history.
Miracleman would an amazing standalone film. Much like Superman Returns and Man of Steel want to deconstruct the Superman lore. As in experimenting the traditional superhero myth. Without dismissing it what made stand out since its origins.
That was heavy review man. Wow.
Alan Moore seems to be going off the rails (more than usual) lately. Every time I hear about him it always seems that he's angry about something.
i get the impression he's always been like that.
but now he can afford to be more public about it.
I might be late here but given how the comics industry treated him he is justified in his anger. He gave us so much masterpieces and they threw him away like shit i would be angry too
Great stuff Omar. It is a much loved work and a great volume. A shame Alan Moore made the decisions he did with the credits though. I have those Marvel issues and the small hardcovers, but got this on order and look forward to it arriving shortly.(Davis cover for me). And of course I've just finished Miracleman 0 and just got Miracleman 1 by Gaiman and Buckingham to finally continue the tale.
Can’t wait to finally read this! Then I can finally read the new miracle man monthly series.
hey Omar, the zoom out you have been doing on overviews is an effective and nice way to start the videos.
I never thought this would happen.
Great review omar, I was not going to buy this but you sold me it, now I must buy and find out what the story is about myself
I ordered this. Never read it, but I know the talent invoved and it has to be good!
A day one must buy for me!
Mine is on the way!
It's already been Pre-ordered 👍 months ago 🤔 Big Thanks Omar for Another Wonderful Video 😃💜
Thanks for the great review!
Do you think we will get Epics of the complete run?
OMAR! you madman lol you are making me flip flop on my next Omni get!
The wait is over
I can't wait to get my hands on my copy and finally be able to read the full story before along side Neil Gaiman's story
I had to go with the Alan Davis cover.
👀I'm throwing money at the screen but nothing is happening.
Sorry in case you mentioned it and I missed it (I didn’t listen to the spoiler section), but will Neil Gaiman’s follow up to the story be republished too?
Miracleman is epic! What would i do to see a Miracleman animated series and a Miracleman vídeo game as well 🤤
hi omar.. are there any stock out issues for this one as it shows out of stock for sellers outside the US
It’s been decades since I read these stories. Can anyone tell me if:
Evelyn Cream and Kid Miracleman’s use of the N-word is censored?
Is the panel of the Captain Marvel family depicted in a panel where Dr. Garganza gets the idea for the fantasy world?
Thanks guys.
EDIT: my first question got answered, they censored it.
I am looking forward to it. My question is how many issues are there? My understanding that it's about half way stories and another half is sketches and arts? Please let us know.
18 issues and an annual. Everything that Moore wrote.
Greatest and Best Comics writer of all time 💞 yes more than Barks, Eisner, Kurtzman, Los Bros Hernandez, Chris Ware
Time to give away my first three hardcovers
I will own this!!! Don't get me wrong the original can't be beat if you don't own these comics you should. So much of all current works were inspired by this. Alan moore did it best.
So, yeah. If y’all are interested in the WHOLE STORY of all the legal wrangling that has followed this particular intellectual property- I highly recommend “Poisoned Chalice: The Extremely Long and Incredibly Complex Story of Marvelman (and Miracleman)”by Pádraig Ó Méalóid
Alan Davis all day any day
How thorough is the extra content? Is it just the extra covers and black and white art pages? -- In the absence of Alan Moore's credit, I'd assume there are no script pages included.
Hi Omar, Is there a reason the solicitation on CGN shows that there are missing issues of Miracleman (1985)? The solicitation shows that issues #2, #4, and #5 are not included. Thanks and love all of your videos.
They are all In here. It’s just an odd numbering system for some reason. Taking the Warrior comics and then the Eclipse comics. But it’s complete.
@@NearMintCondition Thank you for answering.
I bought doomsday clock because of you! I bought this one without you, sorry... it was a no brainer.
can you please do a john contsintine/hellblazer reading
Thanks for the review. I've never even read this stuff, but I pre-ordered this one way back in March. I love Alan Moore and, after getting through a lot of the Captain Britain Omni, Alan Davis as well. I do think it's kinda dumb to censor the N-word, though. I'm by no means a fan of the word, but I don't understand why they're trying to sanitize stuff that's been in print for decades.
Pssst... dude... one of your blur bubbles starts to drift a bit lol 21:12
does the Omnibus's extras and bonuses have more than the Marvel reprints single issues supplemental materials? or just the same content?
I believe more were put in here
Do i need to read anything before reading this omni?
You know what would be great?? to get rid of all of those extras and include the whole story again in original colors (like DC did in The Killing Joke Absolute)
How does this compare to the 4 hardcover volumes released separately a few years ago?
It's bigger and with more extras.
@@NearMintCondition arrrgh now I need to decide if I am double dipping 😭
😱😱😱😱😱
Who is this David Gabriel you speak of? And any way I could be his friend? Haha
Omar, how many pages is it of comic story without all those extras? Thank you.
Does it have the Gaiman/Buckingham stuff?
No.
Those are published separately and will continue to be as Miracleman: the Silver Age and Miracleman: the Dark Age.
The Original Writer. Lol
He wants his name off the book. You don’t want a Wizard’s lawyer going after you.
@@NearMintCondition yeah I'm aware, but I think the phrasing is hilarious
@@NearMintCondition Its such a shame he keeps his grudges. I always think when seeing the lack of his name and involvement with project, if only he would accept the money and put it towards causes in his local area he cares about, ala Mark Millar.
@@NearMintCondition I find it odd that even in the backup notes they had to keep his name off too. Man, take the money and donated you old grouchy wizard.
On the back of Panini's Captain Britain Omnibus they call him 'a writer whose legend is so huge, we are unworthy to mention his earthly name',
I know recoloring have some fans, but i rarely like it, and this one is no exception. That's the main reason i'm in no rush to get it.
You do realize that by telling us Allan Moore didn’t want his name on this as the writer you’re inadvertently telling us he’s the writer.
You do realize that's my intention. :)
Man I want this. I’m split between buying doom patrol by grant Morrison or buying this
Doom Patrol.
I think you should get Miracleman. I’m a huge Grant Morrison fan, but I didn’t think Doom Patrol was that great. In the second half I feel like the weirdness became gratuitous, as opposed to driving character. I found the Invisibles far superior.
Both.
@@hugobonney3029 I bought invisibles instead, I hear it’s pretty wild. I’m very excited. Miracle man and doom patrol gonna have to wait. Let’s see how it goes!
Is Neil Gaimans stuff in the Omni also ?
I don't believe so. Should all go well with Gaiman and Buckingham continuing their story, we might get that as its separate Omnibus.
The beggining has normal comic colors, but then it switches to digital gradient colors?? That's odd.
My god, the recoloring is absolutely criminal...worst since Neal Adams started ruining his own work.
Looks okay too me in my hands right now 😁
?
Hey, How is everyone today?🙂
My wallet fears tomorrow...
Bummer they kept the new colors, still buying this though.
McFarlane owns the colors due to his acquisition of Eclipse
@@cullenn2100 I guess that makes sense, but Marvel also could have remastered instead of going with the gradient look.
I bought the three shc’s a few years ago and read the all within a month, I finished the story and immediately sold it, it really was that debilitatingly depressing, I’ll never read it again.
Truly brutal. The London fight was horrific and really shows true evil
Omar, You sound different in the video. Way less energy than usual (particularly on the first few minutes). Maybe it’s me, but you sound tired or sad. I hope you’re ok.
Exhausted my brother. But getting there. Thank you for noticing
Hmmm...Just got it, bit of a rip off that more than half the book is artwork and storyboards..
I went over all the page count and extras. Keep in mind this is all Moore wrote though.
@@NearMintCondition no slight on your, always, brilliant work!
I should have watched beforehand, still wanted the book, just quite a lot of "extras" when a lower PP could be a better option.
No worries. I just wanted to make sure you saw the where I did.
Goddamnit why do they have to use the god awful recolors from the old reprints
still no clue on his powers and abilities, he's alien tech? is he a superman rip? you keep mentioning Shazam so i guess so? super strength, heat vison, flight, invulnerability?
All of the above. Alien origin. As much a Superman rip as Superman was a rip of Samson and Hercules in a way.
Total pass for me
Someone didn't receive the memo that Marvel trade dress laws require micro-sized characters? 😂
Great design, the way all classic Omnis should be instead of current releases abomination.
Such a bummer they ruined the art with terrible recolors, I’m glad I bought the hardcovers when I had the chance! Recolors on swamp thing absolute were enough of an insult to the original content, but then “doomsday clock” and now this - seems like they really hate Alan Moore and his artist integrity, but love making money off his name!
Eclipse retained the rights to the colors, and Eclipse was acquired by Todd McFarlane. Recoloring was a necessity, not a choice - also, the original art was in b&w, so the first colors were themselves "recolors"
I don't know why people are hung up on those ugly colors. They had his face purple in one panel.
Was it not already incredibly clear that both companies disrespect Moore's artistic integrity but love making money off him? I mean just look at what happened with the Watchmen rights at DC since the 80s, let alone all those other things you mention. And people wonder why Moore is the way he is.
You all make valid points here, and I must admit the first time so read Miracle Man I was a teenager borrowing TPBs that my older brother haggled a San Francisco comics owner to acquire, probably printed in the 90s. I like the he purple faced miracle man, I like the way they colored it the first time, and I wish they would just leave well enough alone because - in cases like absolute swamp thing - so much line work from the penciller is lost when they digitize and redo the colors. If they were able to maintain the lights on John Constantine’s face as he first time readers meet him (as in the original comics) I would be happy with the recolors, but I can’t be happy about losing the quality of the original artwork for the sake of brighter colors that drown out the brilliance of the original product. I wish more comic fans would stop supporting the recolors and demand a reprint that looks truer to the original comics
@@gumbygreen14 I can't stand the Swamp Thing recolors - in that case, I do agree that it harms some of the storytelling. In general I am a fan of the more "flat" 80s colors on the MM issues - but it's simply impossible for Marvel to print them, so I can't grouse about it.
The best Shazam history, whitout Shazam...
Wtf is Miracleman lol. Never heard of it.
Seriously? It’s one of the best comics ever released.
Horrible computer colouring. Shame.
