My friend got me into Malazan about nine years ago. We then pressured two other friends to read it, and they love it. One of those friends was in the military and that was my biggest sell to him. He loved the military feel of the book and said that it really helped him connect to it. I've since convinced about five other people to start, three of them have made it past HoC. I've given maybe six copies of GotM out, not sure if everyone I've given a copy to has started it.
I’m considering making a video about my personal relationship with Malazan similar to this! I read them at an extremely formative time in my life - finishing up uni, meeting my now-wife etc. the big ten seem to be laced into who I am as an adult now. If I can work out a good way to discuss it without it being too soap-opera I’ll upload it!
I agree I first got into Malazan around 2004 and I couldn’t find anyone who had even heard of it, never mind that was a fan. So glad it’s getting more love lately
Found this video from the subreddit, I’m currently on my first read of the series and just started TTH! While I don’t think your channel will blow up solely off of Malazan content, people like me appreciate them and I’m excited for your future videos!
I’m fine with not blowing up! Would love to spend this year learning how to speak ‘in public’ and begin to learn how to edit etc. all while sharing my interests with a small community Thanks for stopping by :)
Great tier list! I'm only on book 5 and it's finally starting to pick up but I can tell it's going to be as good as everyone says. I have to say that so far in my time with this series, book I in House of Chains are some of the most enjoyable chapters for me. (at least on my first read through). I get really immersed in a book when the pov's do not change so often, but overall so glad to be riding the Malazan train!
Great summary of the strengths in each of those books! Toll The Hound is definetly top tier. What other fantasy book can weave such long and intricate plot lines, involving characters so well built and lived through with a conclusion as satisfying? With Midnight Tides, the one I look forward to the most on every reread.

Of the main 10 I rank them like this: 1. The Bonehunters (5 out of 5 stars) 2. House of Chains (5) 3. Toll the Hounds (4.5) 4. Deadhouse Gates (4.5) 5. Memories of Ice (4.5) 6. The Crippled God (4) 7. Reaper's Gale (4) 8. Dust of Dreams (4) 9. Gardens of the Moon (3.5) 10. Midnight Tides (3) Did not like the change of pace in MT. I've actually only recently upgraded it to a 3 star; originally I just gave it 2 stars; I was salty about it for a long time, lol.
I misread this and thought your ratings were out of 10 and I was ready to go to battle haha. I think I’ll do an Esslemont tier list soon - people’s opinions of his stuff varies SO wildly!
Thanks for the video! I thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiasm. As for which books I would recommend because you love Malazan, try Black Company by Glen Cook (if you haven't already) :)
It’s my absolute favourite series of all time! I’ll probably do a few more videos like this until I can find a dedicated recording space that isn’t an unfinished apartment wall where I’m worried I’m going to wake my kids up
What makes it "difficult" is usually communicated poorly. Obviously it is a large series, that spooks most people off itself. There are a lot of characters, which takes some getting used to, luckily you have a long adventure. That adventure is what makes it difficult, or rather, it keeps your reading obscured. Which I personally love. You feel as clueless as the characters up until the end. Unlike other series, where you know what is going to happen based on common written directions, and/or multiple perspectives. You often don't figure out what is happening until the characters are figuring it out. However, you will see a lot of the foreshadowing that was there after figuring something out, and the payoff always feels so rewarding.

Loved your tier ranking video. Waiting to watch other Malazan content in your channel.
Appreciate the kind words! I’m thinking the best way to do it semi-originally. Perhaps reading the series in chronological order?
