The name of this serve in Portuguese (this serve was invented in Brazil) is Jornada nas Estrelas (Star Trek). The name of the jump serve, also invented in Brazil, is Viagem ao fundo do mar (Voyage to the bottom of the sea). Both are much more fun in the original language.
@@betteratbeachvolleyball Yes, I do. There is a video in English of Bernard explaining the creation of the skyball serve and there is a short movie called "Viagem, o saque que mudou o Vôlei" ("Voyage, the serve that has changed voleyball" - we abbreviate the name of the serve to "voyage") telling the story of how William, Montanaro and Renan (from the same generation of Bernard, known in Brazil as the silver generation because their silver medal in 1984 Olympics) created the jump serve (they play beach volleyball with Kiraly in the end of the movie). There is also a Brazilian broadcaster video about the 30 years of the invention of the jump serve. Unfortunately, the movie and the video are in Portuguese and don't have English subtitles. ua-cam.com/video/_QG88S5kjRA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/RokHHHFQycQ/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/5_c74Ympisk/v-deo.html
As a intermediate player, I use this technique, not to the sky but low, and IT WORKS! I can get it to land really short of even long with LOTS of spin to fool most players...not the great players, but enough to screw up others timing.😊 I do it with an open hand and pull over the top of the ball.
@@betteratbeachvolleyball you’re right. It’s ilegal. I just do that when I play with friends, I haven’t find yet a tournament that allows me to serve like that. I hope one day I can do that tho. Lol
I heard Carambula actually NOT allowing pro players receive his Skyball at training sessions... Like, you have to officially compete against me to try receive it. )
Float Skyball version 3 is done from a distance, 4-5 meters behind the court. Contact is made with the backside of streched hand and then you just aim for the middle of the court. Nothing makes your apponents more pissed off than missing a couple of skyballs. 😂
I've been working on my skyball serve anytime i can, I play both indoor and beach volleyball, but somthing funny happened at an indoor tournament, we finished our most recent game, and our next game wasn't in like 2 hours,(It was a gym with only 3 courts, but it was really tall, and there was 12 teams in the tournament) so our coach let us set up a extra net we brought with us at an out court(The school suprisingly had an outdoor court), And we were doing 4 vs 4(We had 9 players in total including our libero) One of our outside hitters didn't wanna play so its was the rest of the team that played, and when it was my turn to serve, another team ended up coming outside, and they saw me skyball serve, and i guess they thought it was a good idea to skyball serve INDOORS because when we went against them, 3 people on their team skyball served and every serve hit the ceiling(They served it like a normal underhand server, Holding the ball, Taking a step and hitting the ball out of their hands, but as hard as they could)
I think the foot work comes a little short on this tutorial. yes there is not much going on but it's still important since u can generate the most power with ur legs. When u put all ur body weight on the front foot (right hander right leg / left hander left leg) and u push that leg through same time u hit the ball u mighty end up with an insane skyball. I'm not a sientist or professional it's just my own experience , so i might be wrong. Have nice day in the sand.
@@betteratbeachvolleyball 4/4 of the skyballs i tried in game missed the court. Before and after while warming up/messing around with no pressure they went in like ~80% of time :D Typical.
I'm confused. All the spin serves looked like they had top spin. You hit your back spin serve to the left which gave it top spin. You hit your forehand serve to the right which gave it top spin.
And for the delighted throng at the Rumble this past weekend it helped to break the monotony of the utter certainty of say a Belov missile an brought a little hutzba and seredipity an entertainment to the show.....which in 90degress 100% humidity conditions was truly a hug worthy performance🤣😎🙏
I have not gone through every comment but would you mind doing a video about how you should receive a skyball serve? I'm normally a consistent passer but last weekend my friend was using a skyball serve (I believe with topspin but I was not reading the spin well) and I ended up shanking a few passes. it has been annoying me all this week. thanks! strangely enough I am also a pickleball player and I think the spin mechanics of this serve replicate a pickleball spin serve that was terrorizing pro players for about 1 year when it was new (now illegal in competition) but it still does not help me receive on the beach
Hey I'm mostly an indoor Player and I have problems converting my jumping abillaty to the beach. My rythim, timing and Footwork are farely good but I have problems getting up from the sand. I feel like I sink down during my last two steps and I don't know why could you please give me a tip or something?

I also like the SkyBall when my opponents are looking into the sun.
good move!

I was always wanted to learn how to do sky ball! 😀
You did one mid game! Remember your video during our meeting?!
Every time I did this it always got my opponents mad so they started wearing sunglasses and it never worked after that
Take their sunglasses 😈
Probably the best tutorial on how to Skyball
Thanks!!
*only
Somehow this is like the only tutorial on UA-cam for a sky ball. Was looking for one before the Rumble lol. Great play out there btw
THANKS! There are a couple out there but not very in depth. We had to upgrade the scene :)
When we played 4s in ft laud avo, you had the most nasty skyballs, but my favorite miss was when you hit the top of the giant ball float
Haikyuu fans: ah i guess you’re referring to the “ceiling serve”
lol

I love serving spinning skyballs, it's funny to see them getting upset about it! Lol My fav serve tho is kicking spin skyballs! LOL
Kick Sky is NASTY.... buuuuutttt, pretty illegal. You can't serve with your feet but some leagues and tournaments dont call it

I LOVE using this serve when the wind is behind me.
I used to do this, but I would face away from the net. It was a lot easier to control than hitting the ball from the side.
Nice. It's a great weapon either way!
I used it on grass at SF Marina Greens where it is windy and it is really effective.
Nice video man also early
Thanks!
You should look at Ivan Zaytsev's skyball it's the highest I've seen so far.
will do!
I’ll try this in warmups I think of serving as a pitcher in baseball. I want as many serves in my arsenal as possible 😁
Wow this serve is amazing 😲so cool ! Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching

Don't get me wrong it's all there in the awesome video but it's just not explicite mentioned ;)
I agreed. I didn't say anything about the feet! Guess we gotta make another one!
Any tips to help out your wrist when serving a sky ball? I've been practicing but my wrists always become really sore.
Good stuff guys!
thanks!
So Ive noticed a bunch of high level players doing this and I just thought they were screwing around. Turns out I was wrong 😆
Nice tutorial but no time to practise for the games tomorrow! Gonna try (and miss) so many of these anyway heyooo!
Good luck :D
how'd the games go?
good support!! :)

I want to see it!!! you better film it and tag me on IG!!! @markburik

Yup. they all have topspin... Just different ways to do it. It Would be SICK to see someone get some power on a skyball with backspin!
I missed the ball and I named that serve the "ground ball" : *(

Just watch my matches that we've posted :))

What's a pickleball serve?
My service is a windmill service
skyball orgoglio italiano
🏐⬆️
how did you guys do at the rumble?
They lost in the semis i believe
quarters for Mark. semi's for brandon.. Solid Showing!
Sometimes I stand backwards and hit the ball up and back
It's sunny and he doesn't have shades on. That's my strategy.
Haha not a bad strategy
what about showin low sharp spinned sky ball?
I like that too! When I mis-hit it, that happens and it always seems to work out!
My dad can do that lol but I didn't know what it was
I got some strange Trent Palmer vibes from this video
make sure there are no cars or windows around 🤣
or small children... safety first!!
Oh, you guys are serious... No thanks, this looks ridiculously dumb...
it's not for everybody. haha but you'll be seeing it in the olympics this year
