Largely, one must start with explaining why "selfishness" isn't limited to a horrid narcissism, why altruism isn't benevolence, why life isn't zero sum and why others teaching all transactions ARE zero sum is a means controlling others. And that's just a preamble. Talking reason to collectivists is almost, but not entirely, futile.

Objectivist philosophy is the basis for all science and technology, without which you'd not be typing on a computer but shitting in a hole. Rand's major contribution was in the field of ethics, which is as important to philosophy as Darwin's theories are in the fields of biology/sociology/psychology. You can't survive without her philosophy, which is how fundamentally important it is.
Someone more intelligent than you would have known that the objectivism that is the basis for science and technology isn't the philosophy known as Objectivism, but rather it's the physically existent that falls within the purview of the physical sciences.
