Correction: The purpose of TESLA Megapack is to replace peeker plants. Within 90 days from start to finish, tesla mega pack can purchased and installed for $40 million and replace a peeker plant and predict when the grid will need energy before the grid does preventing a single black out or brown out. Energy is on demand and delivered within milliseconds. Peeker plants cost between $700M to $900M and takes between 6 & 7 years to build and then needs a lot of maintenance and talk hours to ramp back up with rolling brown outs and black outs.

The KOCH Brothers own it. It’s a $4.5 billion peaker plant. TESLA mega packs were originally designed to mitigate peaker plants all together. Tesla instituted this in Australia years ago now when they were having crazy issues. Basically to Australia we will have a megapack installed within 100 days or it’s free (tesla finished it in 90 days). It balanced the grid supporting it in milliseconds and it was smarter than their actual grid where it began predicting and anticipating surges. Blew away everyone’s expectations saving them hundreds of million of dollars.

Well I see the one account doesn't get you. But I'm going to try. I think, like you. I would make the Battery packs sit below ground, and the panels over and closer around to help shade them. It would put less strain on the cooling system. And below ground level will keep the sun from hitting all sides. I hope I was close, with a little of mine added.

Thanks for the technical description of peaker plants. I always thought the main utility had a simple standby generator, but now know better. To replace a peaker plant, a solar (or wind) farm and mega pack is needed.
The grid needed peaker plants before the green revolution. For the exact same reasons: to take care of peak usage that the big power plants either didn't have the capacity for, or when demand increased suddenly. California has more flexible capacity than it needs, because of over building of these peaker plants (we don't need more peakers BECAUSE of solar.) A bigger source of our deficiency is because we, without planning, turned off San Onofre rather than pay to replace a defective (brand new) heat exchanger.
Not understanding the Megapack "Upgrades" 30% more power, 64% more weight, 100% more price. Are they changing the Chemistry? (edit - yup I posted question before finishing the video) Doesn't the Software Throttle the Output as required, why would you need to have separate units for 0.8MW or 1.9MW output? Not sure you covered the full math of gas vs battery. So with batteries the utilities will have 4 hours to repair a downed electrical system. What am I missing. Does bigger pack just mean more batteries in a box?

LFP will solution will be short lived. Sodium Iron batteries are looking at being about 1/4 the price. CATL have move to the production phase for this chemistry...
because we have a real battery shortage we can produce max LFP and max sodium ion batteries and there is still more demand for those batteries than production sodium ion has a bad wh/l even compared to LFP --> sodium ion is good for energy storage and not that good for vehicles
The chemistry doesn't really matter - it's the scaling up to huge amounts that will create a sustainable future. All types that ramp to scale ( at reasonable cost etc.) can be used in one application, or another...
As a Tesla investor and hopefully a soon owner I love this company and this channel. I live in South Florida on the east coast and have seen the explosion of Tesla's on the road. The Florida turnpike now has Tesla Superchargers at every rest stop. Florida Power and Light (FPL) which is Next era Energy (NEE) uses alot of solar and nuclear power but I haven't seen any thing Tesla. Maybe this will change Solar power and Nuclear power are the best, the wind mills kill to many birds and are eye sores, it would be nice to see them go the way of the Dodo bird.
Out of curiosity in Switzerland an alternative to mega pack way for storing energy is to move water up a mountain to then discharge it during yhe njght. Obviously it requires mountains. Plenty in the alps
Pumped Energy Storage is Great, for Long Duration Loads, but not great for Noisey Variable Grid Loads! (Noise = Variable Demand with Rapid Changes marking Spikes and Valleys in the Energy Demand!) It's more like a Warehouse (Pumped Storage), where Megapacks are more like a Grocery Store or Local Corner Store, providing things on a Shorter Demand Notice, than a Warehouse might!
The problem that I see is that you make the terrible case for the peeker plant but the batteries in the Megapack don't just appear from thin air or by magic. You have to dig up all the materials to the make the batteries from the ground and use electricity to make them. So, is one really better than the other?
The problem with Li-ion batteries for energy storage is the limited number of full cycles. For small amounts of immediate reserve they may make since, but for long term storage there are far better solutions.

For short term energy storage battery system like the megapack will have a very important role. However, for long time storage like summer/winter, they will be much to expensive and will have to many drawbacks. Other systems will take this role
This is all great and dandy, and I love the idea of storing power, but we have to remember something, environmental impact cannot be the argument. The environmental impact made to mine all of the rare earth elements that go into the battery pack is insane. I believe just the loader alone needed to move the earth required to mine all the lithium burns something like 18,000 gallons of diesel in a 12 hour shift. Then you double or triple a quadruple that for all of the other heavy equipment involved, and then don’t forget all of the semi‘s on the road that are required to move the material, and the ships required to ship it from other nations to here. That is just one shift on one day, there are two shifts every day, seven days a week, 350 days a year. To say the battery pack is a green alternative is just shortsighted. Is it a great idea? Of course. It is absolutely something that we should be doing, but it cannot be argued for in the idea of fundamentalism. Need to be argued for in the idea of maintenance, uptime, the humane impact that it has on the power grid, and other things like that. Environmentally, batteries are absolutely terrible for the environment, and something to remember is that amongst the thousands of cells inside of these giant batteries if one goes bad, then the whole battery is crippled.
You are so right, it is so much more environmentally friendly to drill oil halfway around the world, fight trillion dollar wars to secure it, transport it to refineries to use massive amounts of energy to refine gas and diesel, transport it in tractor trailers to pump into an ICE vehicle to burn a 10% efficiently or 20% in a peaker plant.
Your article is focused on 'peaker' power and grid regulation. While this is an important economic contributor, it is not the key reason holding up widespread use of renewable power. You must determine the % availability you require from an electric grid. (eg. %99, %99.9, %99.999) Then: You must estimate the amount of storage needed to cover the worst case outage profiles. (for example how often will the wind calm for say 1 week. It is once per 1 year, one in 50 years or 1 in century etc). Most countries face weather events when the wind does not blow or the sun is cloudy for up to 4 or 5 days. Therefore for a %100 renewable system, the grid must contain sufficient storage to sustain a 4 -5 day outage if we are to dispense with all fossil fuel back-up. Else we raise our costs by duplicating generation. I cannot see anyway of using todays best Megapak technology to bridge a 24 hour outage at anything but a colossal cost. The idea is simply risible. The implication of this is that fossil fuel generation to back up solar and wind results in unnecessarily high energy costs. If we want to reduce costs we need to phase out all public wind and solar generation and use a more rational and cost-effective way to generate electricity.
Peeker power plants are generally natural gas turbines driving a generator. They are relatively inexpensive to construct, inexpensive to operate (natural gas bing relatively cheap until late), very responsive (turbines react in seconds not minutes or hours) and have relatively clean exhaust (just CO2). Renewables are cheap to implement initially. As renewables become predominant energy storage becomes essential. The size and scope of the energy storage element is what will drive up the cost of a green power system. Green energy is the direction we must go both domestically and globally. Tesla’s power packs are a great solution available at the right time.
So gas is relatively clean just CO2 but not quite green enough? I agree we most likely have man influenced global warming but how much is from cloud seeding or other nefarious things being done to our environment by different warring countries? There is an issue with replacing the peaker plant with mega packs. That is, peaker plants generate electricity. mega packs do not. So you have to build more electricity plants on top of storage via mega packs. Mega packs are more like other storage devices, pumped hydro for example.
@@lucidmoses the problem was always storage. Battery tech wasn't good enough until recently. Also it was too expensive. The grid isn't constantly at its max output. Also everything that's producted isn't used. For instance at night when people are sleeping there is a surplus of electricity that isn't being used that will be lost bc there isn't storage. Now the real question is that surplus enough to cover peak hours?
Can someone explain to me that renewables plus storage without subsidies is cost effective with fossil fuels without a carbon tax? Unless you can prove this, these solutions won’t be implemented in any meaningful way where it counts. In the developing world.

they can‘t produce it yet, because the 4680-Batteries are not scaled up yet + the 25k car wouldn‘t be at Launch 25k, because the production lines for the car are not ramped up but it would get cheaper over time
Question. Why didn't Musk use a combination of wind turbines, solar panels and megapacks to power the SpaceX site at Boca Chica? Why did he have a 250MW gas-fired power station instead? Using batteries to stabilise the energy grid just shows how fragile the grid is, but that's what happens when they're built by private utility companies rather than state-owned.

First understand that 50% of 11 Western States are controlled by the Federal Government and I think they own all the land around there. Getting the state to do things takes years and private companies make decisions. I suppose every building could be covered in panels but even his Giga factory is not "covered". Does this power plant also power the island there?

Especially on a hillside. I have a property that goes from 100 ft to 200 ft. I'm wondering if you would need to install a steel girder or base or use concrete. Many hillsides can do a two stack with a maintenance on opposite ends. On top of that add a tiny home. :-)

Just think if a "mini commune" got together on a piece of "cheap land " with no services and a bunch of "tiny homes" with adventurous and hard working members, with residents "way smarter than me'!! They could power the whole community with wind and solar!! They could power water creation and filtering along with "electrical incineration of human waste"!! Just think of the instant affordable scaling that could take place!! Affordable land within commute of a small or medium sized city!! Human waste is not pollution and does not need to be incinerated. Just put it back in the ground. I mean what are you eating that makes it so toxic? Recycle it even macerate it and fertilize your flower garden. Drill a well for water. So much water is wasted flushing it down to the sewer plant. Sewer pipes are so large people use it for garbage.
@@doorwhisperer Sewer pipes were sized when toilets flushed with multi gallons of water along with showers and faucets. With low flow water fixtures it is hard to get enough water to clean the sewer pipes. I'm no expert on it.
OK, so why don’t we put the Megapacks in a multistory buildings Idling to take less land. In places with high population density like LA or SD that would free up land for other use. You could even put the Megapacks under solar panels.
Or solar panels/solar flowers on top of the megapacks, which are on top of empty parking garages in every city everywhere around the world to run those energy hog buildings. They should be super smart and adapt the megapack to be in a shipping sized container and then they could be easily moved anywhere around the entire world that can handle shipping containers. 👍🏻

Hey, Mr windmill dude, how much lithium will be required replace all coal, gas and nuclear power plants? Also, without human intervention, the longterm trend is for CO2 to gradually diminish. Plants begin to die when CO2 is at .015 percent of the atmosphere. Assuming we reach zero CO2 emissions, what do you suggest we do when CO2 reaches 150ppm or .015% of the atmosphere? CO2 never has and never will drive changes in climate. You've swallowed the kool-aid. Search "Jim jones and kool-aid" if you want to know what that phrase means.
Chemical battery cells are great for storing energy for a few hours. For longer storage, they are way too expensive, even if prices come down significantly. Also we probably don't have the capacity to make that many batteries and get that much material. For shorter storage, there are also cheaper alternatives (with even lower capacity but also lower cost per MWh).
CO2 is plant fertilizer and necessary to keep plants & trees alive. CO2 is not a greenhouse gas in fact it is heavier than air and immediately sinks to the ground where plants and trees can remove from the atmosphere and store the carbon so it can be used later.. earth's atmosphere currently has only 403ppm at ground level which is barely enough to keep trees alive. In fact anyone growing plants commercially needs to release huge amounts of CO2 into the growing rooms in order to get plants to grow at their best and healthiest. They grow faster taller, stronger, and more productive. Many plants grow best with CO2 levels of 1500ppm .. before the great meteor impacts on earth the ice core samples show much higher CO2 levels and huge plants and trees, animals and humans were not just bigger too but lived much longer than we do today.. heck not just bigger plants but even the milipedes and dragonfly wings were 6 foot.. think of the giants in the olden times and people living hundreds of years.. so yeah We need more CO2 and they know this or their solution wouldn't just be a tax on humanity.. what a scam. If co2 was any real problem we would all be planting trees not paying a tax to the rich elite for breathing "their" air.. fuck them

Methane is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon that can be extracted and separated from other natural gases such as ethane, propane, butane, etc. (and several others). It is generally under pressure when produced and is compressed to transport safely in pipelines. Methane and other natural gases have a high energy value and are very useful to society to prevent people from freezing to death and provide cleaner alternatives to burning wood, coal, charcoal, or animal dung for cooking. (which helps prevent people from starving to death). Some day in the future society may shift their dependency away from hydrocarbons (including natural gas) when renewable sources of energy become developed and stored at a large enough scale to supply society’s demands. I’m glad Tesla is leading the way in this transition but during this transition I encourage you to show respect for hydrocarbons. You can help by reducing your personal consumption. It’ll take some personal sacrifices but I’m sure you’re up for it😉.

Your whole video is misleading. Combine cycle natural gas plant produces energy and the tesla mega pack does not. Even though a mega pack is efficient but only when energy is already produce. 15 years warranty is not very long a combiny cycle plant last up to 80 years or more producing energy.... what about the contamination generated by extracting the lithium and other rare earth mineral used to produce batteries systems and solar panels that contaminates more than any fossil fuel power plant. Like you said the mega pack pulls already existing power from the grid which comes either from nuclear or gas power plant in the case of texas.... When that mega is able to produce energy let me know. And by the way combine cycle gas plants use to be at 24 % efficiency now they are upward 45 to 54 % way more than solar and wind

Thanks for the technical description of peaker plants. I always thought the main utility had a simple standby generator, but now know better. To replace a peaker plant, a solar (or wind) farm and mega pack is needed.
The grid needed peaker plants before the green revolution. For the exact same reasons: to take care of peak usage that the big power plants either didn't have the capacity for, or when demand increased suddenly. California has more flexible capacity than it needs, because of over building of these peaker plants (we don't need more peakers BECAUSE of solar.) A bigger source of our deficiency is because we, without planning, turned off San Onofre rather than pay to replace a defective (brand new) heat exchanger.

Not sure you covered the full math of gas vs battery. So with batteries the utilities will have 4 hours to repair a downed electrical system. What am I missing. Does bigger pack just mean more batteries in a box?

The chemistry doesn't really matter - it's the scaling up to huge amounts that will create a sustainable future. All types that ramp to scale ( at reasonable cost etc.) can be used in one application, or another...
As a Tesla investor and hopefully a soon owner I love this company and this channel. I live in South Florida on the east coast and have seen the explosion of Tesla's on the road. The Florida turnpike now has Tesla Superchargers at every rest stop. Florida Power and Light (FPL) which is Next era Energy (NEE) uses alot of solar and nuclear power but I haven't seen any thing Tesla. Maybe this will change Solar power and Nuclear power are the best, the wind mills kill to many birds and are eye sores, it would be nice to see them go the way of the Dodo bird.
Out of curiosity in Switzerland an alternative to mega pack way for storing energy is to move water up a mountain to then discharge it during yhe njght. Obviously it requires mountains. Plenty in the alps
Pumped Energy Storage is Great, for Long Duration Loads, but not great for Noisey Variable Grid Loads! (Noise = Variable Demand with Rapid Changes marking Spikes and Valleys in the Energy Demand!)
It's more like a Warehouse (Pumped Storage), where Megapacks are more like a Grocery Store or Local Corner Store, providing things on a Shorter Demand Notice, than a Warehouse might!

The problem that I see is that you make the terrible case for the peeker plant but the batteries in the Megapack don't just appear from thin air or by magic. You have to dig up all the materials to the make the batteries from the ground and use electricity to make them. So, is one really better than the other?

The problem with Li-ion batteries for energy storage is the limited number of full cycles. For small amounts of immediate reserve they may make since, but for long term storage there are far better solutions.

grid level flow batteries like those built by ESS Tech of Wilsonville, OR are cheaper, longer lasting and more eco friendly than lithium-iron batteries.

This is all great and dandy, and I love the idea of storing power, but we have to remember something, environmental impact cannot be the argument. The environmental impact made to mine all of the rare earth elements that go into the battery pack is insane. I believe just the loader alone needed to move the earth required to mine all the lithium burns something like 18,000 gallons of diesel in a 12 hour shift. Then you double or triple a quadruple that for all of the other heavy equipment involved, and then don’t forget all of the semi‘s on the road that are required to move the material, and the ships required to ship it from other nations to here. That is just one shift on one day, there are two shifts every day, seven days a week, 350 days a year. To say the battery pack is a green alternative is just shortsighted. Is it a great idea? Of course. It is absolutely something that we should be doing, but it cannot be argued for in the idea of fundamentalism. Need to be argued for in the idea of maintenance, uptime, the humane impact that it has on the power grid, and other things like that. Environmentally, batteries are absolutely terrible for the environment, and something to remember is that amongst the thousands of cells inside of these giant batteries if one goes bad, then the whole battery is crippled.
You are so right, it is so much more environmentally friendly to drill oil halfway around the world, fight trillion dollar wars to secure it, transport it to refineries to use massive amounts of energy to refine gas and diesel, transport it in tractor trailers to pump into an ICE vehicle to burn a 10% efficiently or 20% in a peaker plant.
What about those container sized liquid batteries.

Your article is focused on 'peaker' power and grid regulation. While this is an important economic contributor, it is not the key reason holding up widespread use of renewable power. You must determine the % availability you require from an electric grid.
(eg. %99, %99.9, %99.999)
Then:
You must estimate the amount of storage needed to cover the worst case outage profiles.
(for example how often will the wind calm for say 1 week. It is once per 1 year, one in 50 years or 1 in century etc).
Most countries face weather events when the wind does not blow or the sun is cloudy for up to 4 or 5 days. Therefore for a %100 renewable system, the grid must contain sufficient storage to sustain a 4 -5 day outage if we are to dispense with all fossil fuel back-up. Else we raise our costs by duplicating generation.
I cannot see anyway of using todays best Megapak technology to bridge a 24 hour outage at anything but a colossal cost. The idea is simply risible.
The implication of this is that fossil fuel generation to back up solar and wind results in unnecessarily high energy costs.
If we want to reduce costs we need to phase out all public wind and solar generation and use a more rational and cost-effective way to generate electricity.

Peeker power plants are generally natural gas turbines driving a generator. They are relatively inexpensive to construct, inexpensive to operate (natural gas bing relatively cheap until late), very responsive (turbines react in seconds not minutes or hours) and have relatively clean exhaust (just CO2).
Renewables are cheap to implement initially. As renewables become predominant energy storage becomes essential. The size and scope of the energy storage element is what will drive up the cost of a green power system.
Green energy is the direction we must go both domestically and globally. Tesla’s power packs are a great solution available at the right time.
So gas is relatively clean just CO2 but not quite green enough? I agree we most likely have man influenced global warming but how much is from cloud seeding or other nefarious things being done to our environment by different warring countries? I mean they (bad guys) do it then blame it on the people driving their cars. We maybe scapegoats in a process that will never be solved.

There is an issue with replacing the peaker plant with mega packs. That is, peaker plants generate electricity. mega packs do not. So you have to build more electricity plants on top of storage via mega packs. Mega packs are more like other storage devices, pumped hydro for example.
I think grid surplus during low demand hours will be enough to cover supplimenting peak hours (about 6hrs).

Also everything that's producted isn't used. For instance at night when people are sleeping there is a surplus of electricity that isn't being used that will be lost bc there isn't storage. Now the real question is that surplus enough to cover peak hours?

Question. Why didn't Musk use a combination of wind turbines, solar panels and megapacks to power the SpaceX site at Boca Chica? Why did he have a 250MW gas-fired power station instead? Using batteries to stabilise the energy grid just shows how fragile the grid is, but that's what happens when they're built by private utility companies rather than state-owned.

First understand that 50% of 11 Western States are controlled by the Federal Government and I think they own all the land around there. Getting the state to do things takes years and private companies make decisions. I suppose every building could be covered in panels but even his Giga factory is not "covered". Does this power plant also power the island there?

Especially on a hillside. I have a property that goes from 100 ft to 200 ft. I'm wondering if you would need to install a steel girder or base or use concrete. Many hillsides can do a two stack with a maintenance on opposite ends. On top of that add a tiny home. :-)

Human waste is not pollution and does not need to be incinerated. Just put it back in the ground. I mean what are you eating that makes it so toxic? Recycle it even macerate it and fertilize your flower garden. Drill a well for water. So much water is wasted flushing it down to the sewer plant. Sewer pipes are so large people use it for garbage.

They should be super smart and adapt the megapack to be in a shipping sized container and then they could be easily moved anywhere around the entire world that can handle shipping containers. 👍🏻

CO2 never has and never will drive changes in climate. You've swallowed the kool-aid. Search "Jim jones and kool-aid" if you want to know what that phrase means.
Chemical battery cells are great for storing energy for a few hours. For longer storage, they are way too expensive, even if prices come down significantly. Also we probably don't have the capacity to make that many batteries and get that much material. For shorter storage, there are also cheaper alternatives (with even lower capacity but also lower cost per MWh).

CO2 is plant fertilizer and necessary to keep plants & trees alive. CO2 is not a greenhouse gas in fact it is heavier than air and immediately sinks to the ground where plants and trees can remove from the atmosphere and store the carbon so it can be used later.. earth's atmosphere currently has only 403ppm at ground level which is barely enough to keep trees alive. In fact anyone growing plants commercially needs to release huge amounts of CO2 into the growing rooms in order to get plants to grow at their best and healthiest. They grow faster taller, stronger, and more productive. Many plants grow best with CO2 levels of 1500ppm .. before the great meteor impacts on earth the ice core samples show much higher CO2 levels and huge plants and trees, animals and humans were not just bigger too but lived much longer than we do today.. heck not just bigger plants but even the milipedes and dragonfly wings were 6 foot.. think of the giants in the olden times and people living hundreds of years.. so yeah We need more CO2 and they know this or their solution wouldn't just be a tax on humanity.. what a scam. If co2 was any real problem we would all be planting trees not paying a tax to the rich elite for breathing "their" air.. fuck them

Methane is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon that can be extracted and separated from other natural gases such as ethane, propane, butane, etc. (and several others). It is generally under pressure when produced and is compressed to transport safely in pipelines. Methane and other natural gases have a high energy value and are very useful to society to prevent people from freezing to death and provide cleaner alternatives to burning wood, coal, charcoal, or animal dung for cooking. (which helps prevent people from starving to death). Some day in the future society may shift their dependency away from hydrocarbons (including natural gas) when renewable sources of energy become developed and stored at a large enough scale to supply society’s demands.
I’m glad Tesla is leading the way in this transition but during this transition I encourage you to show respect for hydrocarbons. You can help by reducing your personal consumption. It’ll take some personal sacrifices but I’m sure you’re up for it😉.

With the right & Smart leadership this plan can get done!! & with having every roof being a solar roof!! Your whole video is misleading. Combine cycle natural gas plant produces energy and the tesla mega pack does not. Even though a mega pack is efficient but only when energy is already produce. 15 years warranty is not very long a combiny cycle plant last up to 80 years or more producing energy.... what about the contamination generated by extracting the lithium and other rare earth mineral used to produce batteries systems and solar panels that contaminates more than any fossil fuel power plant.
Like you said the mega pack pulls already existing power from the grid which comes either from nuclear or gas power plant in the case of texas....
When that mega is able to produce energy let me know.
And by the way combine cycle gas plants use to be at 24 % efficiency now they are upward 45 to 54 % way more than solar and wind
