To this day I feel my heart throb when I hear the word Jasenovac. Orally it has been passed down to me that my great grandfather a Serb from Sarajevo was taken prisoner there, leaving my great grandmother behind to watch 5 children alone. It was mentioned to us by someone who had escaped that she saw him there, his beautiful lush hair was patchy from it being pulled out. My family to this day keeps track of where the family that took my grandfather to the camp is located, we were always told to stay away from a Serbian area in Sarajevo. What plagues me the most is that I just recently was able to confirm with my own eyes the proof that he actually lived in that hell camp, I cried when I saw his number. I didn’t experience that hell but something in my heart and soul feels the misery in a profound way. I am now dedicating a lot of my free time in researching and finding out more information about my great grandfather, I simply wish that we can bring his body home, to his loving family. ❤

The entire history of this genocide is made more horrific and madding by the denial of the events. The Jasenovac camp and the collaboration of catholic church is unknown in the United States. In fact Ustaša Nazi collaborator Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac was martyred and beatified by Pope John Paul II. The "Blessed Aloysius Stepinac Catholic Church" still exists in Chicago, Illinois despite his conviction of treason and collaboration with the Ustaše regime.

Hi Aleksandra, I'm so sorry to hear this. I am a Serb from Dalmatia. I haven't lived there since the war back in nineties. I did visit though. I have bean researching Jasenovac recently including the list of people that got murdered. I found there was a man from my village that got murdered in the camp. I don't know the family he belonged to as I haven't lived there after the war. It is sad they haven't learned much from this. Back in nineties they went to multiple Serbian villages and committed massacres where they killed everyone who stayed. The world isn't talking about it at all and to this day noone is found responsible for these crimes. I was young at the time but I still remember some things.

My parents survived Jasenovac, neither my mother who passed last year nor my father could ever forget that living hell. I never got the opportunity to know my grandfathers or many of my relatives that were slaughtered there. To this day the assholes in Croatia do not acknowledge their crime there. My mother and father were both given token payments by the German government at least they recognised their role there. Both my parents dispersed that money to family and friends as both my mother and father could not live with the knowledge having that money that was paid for in blood.

According to the International Truth Commission on Jasenovac, which has no representatives from either Croatian or Serb territory, more than 700,000 Serbs, 23,000 Jews and 80,000 Roma died in the Jasenovac system of Croatian concentration camps, of whom more than 110 000 children up to 14 years of age. The breakthrough of the camp began in April 1945 with about 1,000 (some sources state 970), and only about 90 of them survived the breakthrough.

My grandmother and great grandmother survived that hell close by. They used to beat my great grandma asking where her husband is to kill him because he was a Partizan Soldier, but luckily they survived it all. The horrors and atrocities were great. Words cannot even begin to explain how all this went down. I myself survived the 90s war. It’s insane to think last 4 generations in my family have gone through wars. The Serbs lost 1 out of very 9 Serbs in the world population, where the Jews lost 1 out of 20 in the world Jewish population due to genocide during the WWII, ,and the entire Jewish population of Croatia and Bosnia was eliminated, 186,000..
People deny what happens for a number of reasons, could be for hatred, fear of reprisal, just to deny for no reason. i am an American-Serb and have many friends that are American-Croatian and if it weren't for the good people of Croatia and Serbia there would have many more people slaughtered in WWII and in the recent 1990's conflict.

Seems to me most of the denial comes from the Croatian emigre community in places like Australia, Argentina (less so now as their numbers have dropped) and the USA and Canada. These communities existed long before WWII but many, many Ustashe went overseas on the so called ratlines and almost all of them were set up by people inside the Catholic Church. Thus they became a sizeable component of the emigre community and some of them are very online looking to rehabilitate the Ustasha movement. I have my own controversial opinions here (the 700,000 is not correct it's Titoite propaganda and most historians accept this), but if I had to guess a lot of the pro-Ustasha comments from these communities probably comes from not wanting to admit that grandpa or great grandpa was a war criminal. Hence the constant revisionist views of established facts and outright denial of information that would make their ancestors look like the monsters many of them were.

    • @matic5003
      @matic5003 9 років тому +14

Zoran Cvetkovic Slobodno mozes na nasem ako hoces, ja sve rezumem. Ja cu na angleskom samo zasto mi je lakse.
I have been learning about balkan history and i am really interested! From what I have learned Raska (Old Serbia) and Croatia were the first countries to emerge out of the roman empire. For many years, until the ottoman invasion, Serbs and Croats were close from what I understand. Croatian kings would marry their daughters to Serbian princes and vice-versa in order to create strong bonds. They were good with each other until the ottoman invasions that separated us. Serbia and Bosnia became an autonomous region in the ottoman empire and Croatia and Slovenia became an autonomous region in the Austro-Hungarian empire. The earliest point of conflict that I could find was when Serbians were given land in the Krajina region as a buffer against ottoman invasion. The Serbs were given a good deal of land, self-governance, forced to pay less tax than the Croatians and Slovenians and were given freedom to practise the orthodox religion. This was much more than the Croatians and Slovenians of the region were given and so they (more the croatians than the slovenians) began to cause problems for the Serbians living there. But I cant see that escalating into full blown hatred! The problems must have started after WW1 during the existence of the Krajlevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca. It makes the most sense to me that the problems started during that time period because when u consider the fact that two groups of people who have been living in different empires for hundreds of years are now for the first time in a long time reuniting! Well than of course there will be tension because both groups have changed over the years. Serbs probably adapted some ottoman characteristics that the Croatians saw as beneath them and therefore slowly, over the course of the years leading up to WW2, the Croatians began to see Serbians as inferior. This is only my guess from what I learned with the limited information available to me. I would love to hear your opinion.
The more I learn about this stuff the more nostalgic I feel for old Yugoslavia even though I was not alive during its existence. I looked up the DNA makeup of the balkans and found that Serbians and Croatians share almost identical DNA except for a few small differences (which is only normal when you consider the many different groups of people that have migrated through that region). Since it is clear that both Serbians and Croatians come from the same source I have a very difficult time in understanding how they are so divided today!
It is very sad that it is like this because neither Serbia nor Croatia will ever be as strong on their own as they can be together. In todays world we clearly see large powers forming (EU, US, EURASIA) and carving up the world for their own agendas. EU pulling on one side and EURASIA pulling on the other and we let them tear us apart! Very sad! I think what needs to happen there is that both Croatians and Serbians need to experience other mentalities of the world in order to learn to appreciate the similarities they share between each other. That way they can understand that it is always better to be together than apart. Our division only benefits foreign interests and only hurts us.

      Matic500 T
      he Kingdom
of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes,
established in 1918, did not obtain the confirmation and permission of
the Croatian Parliament. This state, created in 1918 from the Austro-Hungarian
part, (Slovenia, Croatia,Vojvodina, Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Serbia
and Montenegro, which wereopposing sides during the First World
War (1914-1918), contained a germ of numerous future conflicts. It was
composed of different traditions, religions, nations, languages and
scripts. At that time the region
of Vojvodina did not include Srijem
(the territory between rivers Sava and Danube), that before 1918
belonged to Croatia. Vojvodina belonged to Hungary before 1918.
      The idea of Yugoslavia
was in fact the best opportunity for
Serbian nationalists to create the Greater Serbia, which was completed
in 1918 according to the 1844 secret program. Montenegro lost its
independence in 1918 after being brutally annexed to Serbia. The
independence of Montenegro was regained in 1945 within the Tito's
      Yugoslavia.
      The whole property of
      the Austro-Hungarian state and booty
was confiscated by the Serbian authorities. Immediately after 1918 all
the leading positions in the army were seized by Serbian officers, who
treated Croatia as a hostile territory in the common state (it was
publicly declared in 1919!). On the other hand, it was presented to
Europe as if the Croats had entered willingly the union with Serbia.
      The Serbian legislature,
      juridical and military 19th century
law was simply implemented into the new state without changes and
without consultations with the Croats. It resulted in unbearable terror
and persecutions of Croatian peasants and intellectuals. Croatian
      teachers were retired and persecuted.
      Equally difficult was
the economic terror of the Belgrade
government. The Croats were not proportionally represented in the
government and diplomatic corps. The old currencies - Serbian dinars
and Croatian (Austrian) crowns, which in 1918 had the same value, were
in 1919 changed for the new dinar in the following ratio: 1 dinar = 4
      crowns!
      On the other hand,
taxes were lower in Serbiathe major part of foreign loans was spent in Serbia, high administrative posts were filled exclusively with the Serbs (civil servants in Croatia were appointed by the central administration in Belgrade).
Very cruel persecutions of the Muslims by the Serbs resulted
in their massive emigration to Turkey soon after the foundation of
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918, where Serbia was the
leading and privileged nation. The same happened to several hundred
thousand Muslims soon after the Second World War. We have witnessed the
same persecutions since 1992. Only in the first half of 1992 about
250,000 Croats and Muslims were exiled from Bosnia to Croatia, as an
adding to its own 350,000 citizens exiled from the occupied areas.
      One
of the most outstanding and most
popular personalities in the Croatian political history was Stjepan
      Radic (1871-1928), the leader of
      the Croatian Peasant Party,
assassinated in the Yugoslav parliament in Belgrade (capital of present
Serbia) in 1928 together with his colleagues. The assassination was
organized at the Royal court in Belgrade. Radic strived to renew the
Croatian sovereignty and the economic and cultural emancipation of
Croatia. He wanted the state of the Southern Slavs to be reorganized on
      confederative basis, without Serbian hegemony.

Sky Isblue totally right, religion is absolutely the only difference between Serbs and Croats and the only reason for all deaths and divide. For example Italy is clear example, it was until 19th century split in numerous states and it only survived so far united because it is whole Catholic while differences between regional differences are much bigger compared to ex Yugoslavia.

You have to know that we are not colonial empires or anything like that. We have huge history of war's,but we didn't attack nobody. Our home is in crossing ways to east and west empires that attack bus and we have never surrender to those who was stronger. MANY OF SERBS DON'T know thing that 7 Rome empire kings are birth on SERBIAN territory. From that information, something must be interesting about Serbian population. NIKOLA TESLA perhaps greater and most intelligent person who ever live in near history isn't British,Spanish,Greece but he was SERBIAN. This is something that little bit of population of world know,Albert Abstain didn't make famous formula, that was one of work by his wife SERBIAN women Mileva!!! But it's much better to be AUSTRIAN then SERBIAN in that time. We were on Ottoman empire almost five hundred years and they didn't upgrade their lives for all of that time, you can imagine how much SERBIAN orthodox Christian people could be progressive if they rule at our territory. We have one big fighting with Turkish empire in 1389. on Kosovo field. They come with 50-70 thousand soldiers and we have only 20-30 thousand soldiers and that was all of Serbian man population. But we are famous in battles so someone in France ring the bells for our victory but other side Turkish, that after 10-15 years take over our queens place and next almost 500 years stay at our territory and many other countries that they concord. I didn't told that wr killed their empire Sultan Murat and his son Jakub, but we also lost king and best knights of that time in Europe. In present time I must remind you about our famous NOVAK DJOKOVIC who is probably GOAT at tennis and he plays like 10 years ago. Think about that he won AUSTRALIAN OPEN 9 times. Last year they didn't allow him to play because he didn't want to take COVID injection of antivirus. That was reason to deported him from Australia and somebody else vin tournament. But you have any idea what was real reason to make such a decision to not allow him playing tennis!? He was healthy and prepared to take another Salem. Conspiracy was that they would be changed name of Arena in Australia from Rod Leiver (don't know how write name of mr. Rod) in case that Novak Djokovic win again that is ten times in his tennis player life time,so Arena change name in to NOVAK DJOKOVIC. If on his place was for example Federer Australia let him to play even with Covid positive test results. You can be sure about this and there is so many similar problems because we didn't change our religion and didn't give our land to be taken of Serbia and another state America and Germany make from our south part of country where we have 1365'churches and other things that belong to Serbian history. That part we call Kosovo and Metohia. In that last 100 years Albanian people who come to Balkans from Kavkaz multiple people like they are going to become Chinese and they are in that part of Serbia more than us. They have all kind of rights and freedoms that nobody give them, but they wanted to make new state Kosovo. They even make terrorist organization and financing it from Swiss and Germany were most of family who have 12 son's,half of them send to Europe countries (Swiss and Germany) to working there and send money back to home. Some part of them are honest working people and bigger part is drug selling on the streets and money of drugs also going to place where they buy weapons and other equipment. In Albania that we border with Serbia someone steal weapons and bullets from military facilities in Albania and after several months send into Serbia territory, because that is border in the top of mountains whit hard territory to monitoring 24/7 in those years(98-99). And after they killed many policemen,we can't looking at terrorists so we started anti terrorist operation. Their terrorist organization UÇK (Kosovo liberation army) unit spring of 98. was on same list like Al Qaida and other ,that Americans put there for a reason. But everything changed in the spring of 98. when they fighting for Albanian rights, what was absurd. That was not approved about taking millions of dollars to be against Serbia and our military, police and civilians. We know that Medley Olbrit take most of money and then she give oder important people in US political scene. Also we (,inteliget service) knows that one of terrorists "make a love" whit that women and after we finished war with Nato forces, she overtake Telecom from Serbia and make private company, also chif general of American and Nato forces, take over mining rear metals and other things that belong to Serbia and we will be again on our graveyards and churches even must waiting for next thousand years in future. But thet can be able to make next year. We are small and whiteout background,so if Russia defeat Nato In Ukraine ,that will be green light for attacking and retaking our land full of Serbian blood

What about this…im bosnian serb, the Ustase came one day to my grandfather’s village and picked up my grandfather’s father, while they were walking through the village road there was a 10 years old my grandfather’s brother who saw his father taken by ustase and asking him “father where are you going?”, the Ustase asked my great grandfather “is this your son?”, he said “yes it is”, than ustase said “ok little one, come with us”, my family found their bodies later under the bridge, they were both shot dead.
And yes, the ustase were bosnian muslims, they were in ustase too, i hope this explains a bit why we serbs were rough to them in the 90s wars.

I wrote this text in memory of all decesead back in those gloomy days, specially the children, innocent targets of other's hate. They didn't know about the ambitions of conquest, supremacy and dominium over others. Didn't know about religious thruth or lie. Could not differentiate between good and evil. Still they were the proeminent victims of men's wickedness.
I did not know that the "valiant" Ustasha "fought" the war in this way. I only knew from the top, of the prison camp at Jasenovac. I am speechless ... But a great deal of anger, and sadness, is taking over me.
My father is a native of Split and fought with Tito's partisans, like many others. My mom is from Dubrovnik. She was Serbian and orthodox. I was born in what is now Serbia and I am baptized orthodox.
My father fled Yugoslavia and took my mother and me by the advent of the Communism. So I have relatives in Croatia and a few others in Serbia. What happened in World War II, in my opinion, must be forgotten. Hate breeds more hatred ... and it never ends.
I hope that the new generation will not be influenced by these stories so as not to hold a grudge and, who knows, in the future there may be more peace in the region. Times are different now.
I know how difficult it is to "forget" these events, this bestiality, this horrible lack of humanity. And forgive.
I cannot forgive the Ustasha or the Nazis. Even so, I will not pass these stories on to my children. They better not know. They better not grow up with hatred in their hearts.
These videos, whether from Serbs or Croats, should not be shown. This is not information. This is the spread and perpetuation of hatred. It does no one any good and poisons the soul and the heart.
My parents, both already deceased, never told me much about this subject. I, as a regular history reader, had known for years about the rivalry between the Serbian and Croat tribes. I knew there was conflict and I had a reasonable knowledge of the subject. I didn't know, however, about the horrible details that appear in several videos, which I confess, I don't have the heart to watch. I want to forget. I advise everyone to forget and above all, do not talk to your children. Don't relay hatred. This has to end.

In the Balkans, we have older beer than your country!!! Can you find Europe or a part of Europe such as the Balkans on the world map? Can you even find your country or province on the world map? when you learn all that, we can have a little discussion. Until then, leave us Balkans alone, as much as we Balkans hate each other, we love each other, you will never understand that. Please don't interfere in something you don't understand.

Hi I'm from Croatia.I found this lecture very informative.I am from a Croatian Partisan Antifascist family.
I was also a victim of the 90's war and had to live 4 years im exile when Serbia attacked Croatia.War caught me when i was 14.I didnt even know what my ethnicity was because the ethinicty wasnt even important in Yugoslavia.3 months after i heard what I was,my and my family were evicted from our home by Serbian forces and my childhood friend was killed
There are just a few things i wanted to add to this video
First and foremost Croatian people never voted for the Ustasa regime. Those idiots took power.Croats never voted them in. I dont know a single person in my region who supports them or thinks positivly of them
Second there were at least 250.000 Croatian antifascist soldiers who fought against the Germans,The Ustase,Fasist Italy and Serbian Chetniks. My grandfathers fought them all !
The 1st Antifascist Squardon in Europe was founded in Croatia in 1941 in Sisak. The 1st Sisak Brigade and they attacked the Germans the same day
Our first president the late Franjo Tuđman was a great antifascist fighter and a general in Josip Broz Tito's army who was Croatian as well. The whole leadership of Yugoslav partisan antifascists were Croatian
Many many Croats fought against Nazism, but there is also massive Serbian nationalist propaganda movement that tries to paint all Croats as Nazis
I think that is wrong because of that propaganda i became a victim of a war myself
And last thing i want to add is that Jasenovac camp was in use untill 1952.The communists used the Jasenovac camp for 7 years after the war for nazis and their own political opponents. So i would really like some kind of neutral commition to take place so we know all historical facts without any nationalist propaganda
I would also like to add that more then 5000 antifascist Croats were killed in Jasenovac camp
Oh... And .... There was a breaktrough from the Jasenovac camp and the organiser and the leader of that breaktrough was also a Croat. His name was Anto Bakotić.He saved a lot of prisoners that day

Serbia did not attack Croatia back in the nineties. Croats started the war as they first wanted to get independence from Yugoslavia, that's where it all started. Serbs never attacked you. I come from Krajina. I was a kid at the time and my family had to flee for our lives because Croats attacked us civilians. Croats burned 30000+ Serbian houses, schools, churches, they bombed kids while trying to evacuate, they went from village to village killing everyone who stayed. Multiple massacres happened in Serb villages, Varivode, Golubic etc. Some were killed in front of their family members. I am not dismissing what you are saying and that you and your family went through things but don't tell people lies that Serbs attacked you because Serbs did not attack. It was Croats that wanted independence and then attacked Serbian populated areas as they couldn't get independence with the little area they lived in.
