As I am very happy that my home Bundesland "Salzburg" was so prominent festured in this video, you might get the wrong idea that Austria is just the Alps. Mainly the western part of Austria is. The east part is rather flat, has beautiful planes and Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Vienna are stunning city's combining century old buildings with modern architekture. Greetings from austria

As an Austrian, I can confirm that our country really is this beautiful. And the best part: since it’s so small, you can get to all this stunning places in no time. If you like hiking (and/or winter sports), I think Austria and Switzerland are the countries to go! Let’s just hope we can preserve the nature for many centuries to come!
I think so too because I’m also from Austria!
slovenia also
it's the most amazing place to live.
@@nathaliepalmetshofer5036 FPÖ though...
I wouldn't say "no time", but I guess it's pretty manageable overall. (Depending on where you start, as a visitor, so Salzburg, or Vienna, it can be two hours, or five, or ten, maybe fifteen. So, not no time, but doable.)
Man, the state of the Pasterze glacier just brings tears to my eyes. Even though you might think it still looks beautiful, you should have seen it 15 or 20 years ago 😥
Also this video focussed mainly on destinations close to Salzburg airport and dismisses a lot of beautiful sites further away. Carinthia or Styria for example have very beatiful places but also the eastern foothills and flats. I grew up in the east of Austria with the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains in the distance and live in Vienna now but man do I love the Alpine landscape too
I know right? I’m Dutch and we went to Austria and Switzerland a lot on vacation when we were kids. A few years ago we were back in Switzerland and I was shocked at te difference of the Rhone glacier. It used to come over the mountain ridge and now there is a huge lake in front of it. I’ve been to Vienna once, it’s a beautiful city.
Looked like it was pretty much gone
I should go to the Jamtal glacier. Last time I've seen it was more than 40 years ago.
It reminds me of the news report than by around 2050 - 2060 Germany will have no glaciers any more. And many in other Alpine countries are predicted to disappear too.
As sad as it is, keep one thing in mind: Pasterze is a word of slovene origin for an alpine meadow.
=> it has been what is called an "alm" in german during the lifetime of the slovene language once before.
He was like "it's a lake" and I was like "that's how a dying glacier looks like, that's climate change".
Austria and Switzerland are breathtaking. Standing on top of a mountain and looking out over a valley towards mountains in the distance, is beyond my ability to describe. I teared up. Beauty like I've never seen before or since.
@3:50 while Austria is among the richest countries in the world, prices are actually quite decent compared to its neighbors. 35€ toll might sound expensive, but you have to consider the huge cost of maintaining this road. After snowy winters often some sections have to be basically rebuilt...
@4:27 speaking of snowy winters: unfortunately the Pasterze glacier (like most glaciers in the alps) is rapidly shrinking. The whole grey area in front used to be covered by ice just 20 years ago, and the footpath led literally _onto_ the glacier. It is currently losing 40-50 meters of length each year 😞
@5:40 when you are in Hallstatt (which literally means 'salt-place' in old celtic languages; every place with 'hall' in its name at some point in time had to do with salt) it's also worth visiting the salt mine. It is the oldest in the world, with some archaeological records dating back over 5000 (!) years. The whole historic time period of "hallstatt culture" (1200 - 450 BC) is named after this town. Another nearby attraction is the Dachstein caves (one of which is a permanent ice cave), one of the largest cave networks in the world.
Generally, the video is very focused on the alpine region of Austria; but the country has to offer so much more when it comes to landscapes, climate, culture, ... in the eastern part it is more hilly until it gets flat and steppe-like towards the eastern border with Hungary. Lots of towns and cities are worth a visit as well, not just Salzburg but also Innsbruck, Graz, ... and of course the capital Vienna - all with literally millennia of history.
Austria is also a good starting point to visit surrounding countries, as it's located right in the middle of Central Europe and has historically been a gateway between Western and Eastern Europe (even during the cold war there used to be daily trains into the Eastern bloc from Vienna). Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia are just a day's drive (preferably by train) away.
You were definitely a good student, you wrote an entire essay about this video

bruh austria is NOT a rich country, but its also not poor, compared to non eu countries
@@ohhi5237 According to the World Bank, out of 177 countries, Austria ranks #15 in GDP per capita , and #101 in poverty rate (which in contrast to many other countries is for the most part alleviated by a welfare state, i.e. being on the poor end doesn't immediately put you in a rough place).
Austria's GDP per capita is higher than e.g. Germany, the UK, New Zealand or France, and more than 4x higher than the world average.
What else would you call that, if not "rich"?
When I first went to Austria I couldn't believe how like a fairytale the place is, especially the castles and the lakes surrounded by amazingly high mountains. Vienna is worth a long visit too. Its old churches and castles reminding people that Austria had its own empire until the 1st world war.
I dont know if you come from Austria or not but if not i hope that you really liked it here in Austria

Meanwhile in the comments... Austrians reacting to American reacting to a video about Austria 😅
A couple of things I noted: Ryan misspelled a couple of place names, so if you're going to be looking for them, make sure you check if the spelling is correct. Like it should be Burgruine, with the word "Ruine" meaning "ruin", basically the same as in English. The way he spelled and pronounced the word it sounded like a French name, not a German word meaning "castle ruins".
Also, Hallstatt is beautiful, but ever since the entire town was rebuilt as a theme park in China (not kidding), it's been completely overrun by tourists, with some entering private houses to look for public toilets etc, so they're thinking of limiting tourism or charging a fee to even enter the town. There are several places nearby which are almost as picturesque and a little less touristy, like Altaussee, which is also by a lake and has a really cool salt mine just like Hallstatt.
The area Ryan visited is indeed one of the most beautiful areas in Austria, but if you have more than a couple of days to visit the country, you should definitely visit a few other places that are just as spectacular.
And yes, unfortunately, the area covered in the video is among the most expensive places to live within Austria, so you do have to be rich to live there... Unless your family has always lived there and you were fortunate enough to inherit a house or plot of land. Back before the 1960s, when public transportation and infrastructure wasn't that good in rural areas, it was cheaper to live there than in a big city. Nowadays it's very expensive to buy property there.
I can confirm that the locals of Hallstatt already have to put signs on their doors telling people "This is not a Museum!"
The spelling was within the video he watched, so don't blame Ryan on that 😉. The other thing was that I was told that Hallstatt was used for a TV show in China and people thought they were on the set when visiting Hallstatt. I suppose why ever it is doesn't matter too much to the unfortunate people of Hallstatt, in that they still have people who want to intrude on their lives. Thank you for your perspective.
@@CabinFever52 I thought the other guy in the original video was also called Ryan, I was referring to him! Sorry if I was mistaken.
@@kathilisi3019 no worries. Have a great day!
One thing I have to add: The version of hallstatt in china is mirrored in comparison to the original, you know, for copyright and stuff, lol. Anyways i even think they built the interior of some houses.... now imagine being the one whose house was rebuilt in china ... kinda creepy. I can relate to he problem because once a year there's an event where crap loads of people pour into a village next to me and basically clog and park on the entire road leading to my house. Oh yea and some of my relatives lived in this village until a few years ago, guess who at one point had random tourists standing in their bedroom?
Austria is a beautiful country which I have visited over 20 times and never get tired of exploring especially round the Zillertal Alps. From that huge lake/dam there is a well used path up and over a mountain pass into Italy - and, of course, a hotel/restaurant at the top! Walks and hikes are well signposted showing the time it will take to get to the destination, and there are many mountain cafes for the weary traveller to get something to eat and drink, some even have live music to get your toes tapping!. Cable cars and chairlifts help you to get up into the mountains and most of the lakes have boat trips or boat hire to enjoy too. Salzburg is a gorgeous city, well worth a visit, as is Vienna.
This is a typically excellent video from Sean. The title is a mite misleading, however, as the places he covers are all in the rural parts of western Austria. Places such Salzberg itself, Graz, and the most romantic of all European capitals - Vienna - are all worth visiting when in this ancient land.
The most alpine/mountainous parts of Austria are Vorarlberg, Tirol, Salzburg, Steiermark and Kärnten. The mountains of the Alps are reaching into parts of Oberöstereich and Niederösterreich too.
The video is showing just a few places in central Austria.
@@MichaelBurggraf-gm8vl Yes indeed but I would argue, that Niederösterreich is one of the very few places that you can stay away from when visiting Austria - except maybe Wachau but all the rest is forgetable at best.

Hochosterwitz - a medieval castle on top of a butte with 14 unique castle gates (it was sieged but never conquered)
the Kärnten lakes land - many lakes to swim in the midst of the mountains
Innsbruck - the beautiful capital of Tyrolia with "Goldenes Dachl" and Winter Olympics facilities

Hallstatt is known for there ancient Salt mining. The first salt mining was there 5,000 BC and in during the time of Pharao Tutankhamun (ca. 1,500 BC) the salt production was still on a industrial scale with mines already 100 - 200m deep.

Sometimes I feel the land of your ancestors can be woven into your genetics. I was born and raised in Panama, with family in various other nations. While my father is technically your typical mestizo, my mother's family were from Austria. Here I grew up in a swampy jungle, with both coasts being two long beaches, and a view of the Pacific Ocean. Yet somehow, I had this personal obsession and yearning for mountain enclosed valleys, much like you see in Austria.
I went abroad for a couple of months, wasn't missing the people (apart of family and friends ofc) or the culture, but couldn't stand living in a different landscape. Came back to Austria and never left the country since
As an Austrian Australian (Yes were pretty rare but we do exists) I grew up in Feldkirch (Small town bordering Lichtenstein) I find myself incredibly lucky to have grown up in such a beautiful country, W austria.

I actually didn’t have the best of times in Vienna. I do believe the weather and the amount of days I travelled had a lot to do with it (I would’ve loved to see the countryside waaay more). I even got sick while I was there. But my only good and top memory was going to my first classical music concert there which was a Mozart concert in the Schönbrunn Palace❤. Sadly I wasn’t dressed appropriately, I was backpacking so I didn’t have proper attire and it was literally last minute decision so didn’t have time to go to a store😢. But I wasn’t missing it. Vienna and classical music was a dream come true ❤ I will definitely be back and give Austria the time it deserves to be visited❤❤
As an Austrian, im telling you to visit Mondsee. Its really beatiful. The Lake looks so wonderful.
Yeah, we live there. And in winter snow skiing costs half the price of Aspen for 5 times the skiiable area per village.

Oh finally. ❤ It was odd that Vienna was missing, though. One of the prettiest and most historical places in Europe, without doubt.
it depens in which district you are, never go to 10. , 16. or 20th district!
@@MrComacity Lol. If you hate foreigners, then yeah.
Otherwise, these districts are perfectly fine, they just don't offer much for tourists. Ottakring has a lot of green and the Brunnenmarkt/Yppenmarkt, though.
And the greatest city in the world for classical music and Opera in my opinion. The Vienna Philharmonic is incomparable. In addition, prices to go to the Vienna State Opera or Symphony Orchestras are far lower than they are in New York or Berlin, Vienna's closest competitors. Vianna is also a gorgeous and walkable city, I love the place.
@@MrComacity Pretty much the same for any major city! Nobody needs to go outside the tourist areas.

Hy, Ryan - I'm a connection of both you mentioned in the beginning - I'm German now living in Salzburg, Austria since 8 months... I love to get out and explore the Salzburg area. Salzburg is not only the city - it's one of 9 austrian states. I've got the "Klimaticket" - a ticket for every public transport in the state of Salzburg for 365€ a year (1€ a day) so every daytrip is taken care of without paying extra...

The video just covered about 5% of Austria, I would have appreciated showing the insane diversity in such a small country ❤
Videos like this make me appreciate our landscape even more. Perfect location for motorcycle riding!
I am Austrian and I was in many of the named places, they are really beautiful! The Schafberg is so impressive, the view is breathtaking! And yes, you can really walk up to the edge of the cliff, it is frightening. XD
Groceries: You get them in supermarkets in major towns and cities! Except on Sunday, when everything seems to be closed, unless you go to small local grocery stores or train stations (all stores can be open at Train Stations on Sunday). Yes, Austria is an expensive country to visit, but the trains are excellent, you don't need to rent a car, and can live on the excellent sausages on stands on sale all over the place. Austria and Switzerland next door are very clean places, except for some neighborhoods in the cities that you will not end up in anyway unless you are looking for hookers or to get high.
And Gosau has a (at least one) supermarket.
I love Austria for its nature. Austria, Switzerland and Norway are my top 3 European countries.
I am Austrian and I would recommend the Leopoldsteinersee its a very beautiful Lake
In Steiermark there is also a castle what is build on an inactive volcano❤
I love Austria. We drove through there last week going to and from Italy. It is so, so very beautiful!!!!❤ What is sad, is that we make this trip every spring for the past 26 years, and there seems to be less and less snow on the mountains every year. It’s very troubling.😔
I feel so too, I'm 36, as I was a child I remember that there was much more snow (not in the mounten near Vienna) but now I hope every year that my kids see a little bit snow compared to that we had. But my ount told me the same, as she was a kid there were even more then to my childhood time.
Strange, that I get every year pictures from my uncle, who shows me many centimetres of snow in Tirol. We, who lived and live there know it better. I am glad, I am not leaving there anymore, shipping snow, sometimes 6 Month in the year.
Why you all think, that going through it will tell you the truth, Mainstream Media is giving to you in their Propaganda Machine. Why the people in the German speaking area are so stupid I wonder! And, going trough. Yes, I know does Germans, who are driving every year through the so that we see the fog over the Autobahn. I am glad, I could flee the German speaking area. I am done with this place. There are more beautiful spots on this planet, then bloody Austria. Heuchlerisches Pack!!!
I have better things to do, than give the attention to stupid persons. Buy and do not forget to charge your E-car SUV.
It's very troubling that you don't recognize that we had one of the coldest April (and May so far) in Austria this year and that it even snowed a lot in the mountains (about >1500 meters) within the last weeks. Which is pretty unsual at this time of the year. But with media manipulation obviously many can't adapt to reality anymore.
Greetings from Vienna/Austria 😅
The grass is that green for a few weeks when it starts to shoot in spring or right after making hay.
But, yes there is something to be said about vegetation in the temperate zones.
As a Viennese I am slightly offended we`re not featured here. 😫 I love how many non-Austrians in the comments know the place much better than I do. I`ve always spent my childhood summers at Attersee and when I was old enough, I started travelling through Europe with friends whenever possible and then moved abroad. I am 42 and was 40 when I first went to Vorarlberg. Loved it. Vorarlberger are amazing - much nicer than the average Viennese.
Having visited 8/10 of the places featured in the video, I can confirm Austria is a beautiful country. As a kid I went there with my parents 5 years in a row during summer holidays and it never got boring.
3:02 it depends on where in Austria you live, but usually living in cities is far more expensive. Example: I live in a flat with something between 70 and 90 squaremeters in Vienna with my parents and not to long ago we requested an offer to buy it. 300K. In rural areas here that's a quite big house.
However there is still areas that are very expensive, that are not considered as cities. I don't know how much it costs, but I know that living right next to the Wolfgangssee costs almost a fortune.
I'm English and Austria is beautiful with good food and history. If you go there you MUST try kaiserschmarrn, locally made schnitzel, and einspanner coffee. Also most places are dog friendly and the towns have an old world vibe. Switzerland is just as beautiful. Take a trip where you visit both. Only thing is Switzerland is pretty expensive. You're a cool guy. We'd get on irl.
Wolfgangsee is where my parents took me on vacation a lot of summers. I only have the best memories. He made some mistakes there, though. The steam train up Schafberg goes up from St. Wolfgang, not St. Gilgen. The cable cars (an aerial tramway) leaving St. Gilgen are going up Zwölferhorn, not Schafberg, another mountain. Glad he mentioned the butchering himself, made some spelling mistakes, too. Good recommendations and beautiful views, though!
The "Krimmler Wasserfälle" are btw the biggest waterfalls (380m) in Europa and the 5th highest in the world
there is a reason why Austria is always among the top3 German holiday destinations. Easy access, no language barriere, incredible delicious food, nice people and most of all beautiful landscapes, mountains, lakes, sites, whatever...
There is a language barrier with the dialect.
@@Dark-ts3ox most people are able to at least "lower" their dialect when talking to tourists... but of course if you meet some farmer in the middle of the forrest, it might be difficult..... but the same goes if you go hiking in the last corner of Bavaria, Swabia or the Eifel... not a chance
As a Salzburgian, thanks for this video!
A visit to the Schafberg was one of the best days of my life. The video footage doesn't do it justice. Schafberg is like a mountain in between 4 lakes. When you look down from the top it's kinda if you are in the middle of a cloverleaf of lakes. When you look south from the Schafberg you have an amazing view of the Alpes if you look North you have a amazing view to the horizon of green fields. The best experience you get is that you go there on a clear sunny day. In the morning rent a little electric boat to go over one of the lakes for 1 or 2 hours and after that go up Schafberg from Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut.
I am a proud Austrian from Styria - we have the most beautiful country in the whole world I mean.
love from austria
I’ve visited Austria (and Switzerland) many times in summer and both countries are very beautiful.
Greetings from Austria (nearby Salzburg).
Yeah, Schafberg! This mountain will be one of my next mountains to hike. I just wait that the weather will get more stable. Lovely mountain.
And yes, this are our mountains as well as lakes. Maybe this is also the reason why hiking is very common in the center or west of Austria.
Just watched your video to Budapest. Half austrian - half hungarian and living in Vienna I love both of these beautiful countries.
When I was a kid I got dragged to Salzburg by my mum and sister because they were both huge 'The Sound of Music' fans and I was bored to death! Years later I went to the Austrian F1 GP on my own and stopped in Salzburg on the way and finally got to appreciate it for itself! Mind you, in defence of my mum and sister I did get to spend my 10th birthday in Vienna!
As an austrian, here is a little fun fact: 9 out of 10 austrians, have never heard about "The Sound of Music". Totally unknown over here.
Wolfgangsee is an amazing place. Spent two weeks camping last year. Hiking, biking, boat tours or just relaxing there was amazing. The view every morning, unpayable.
I was born in Berlin but grew up in Bad Ischl (now live in Vienna) and yes, it is really that beautiful here. Went swimming in the Wolfgangsee (about 20 minute drive away) every summer. There’s also a summer toboggan run near the lake.
Don’t worry, enough shopping opportunities but obviously nothing like a Walmart. There are often smaller, specialized stores in different villages. If you want to treat yourself you drive to a bigger town/city like Salzburg.
Not too many want to live in Hallstatt directly because it’s rather dark and cold (high mountains all around) and yes, it’s mainly a tourist destination. You should watch a video about the village you can visit the oldest salt mine of the world as a tourist and the history in general is legendary. You can also visit an excavation of graves from 400-800 BC and the „Beinhaus“ where you see (partially beautifully painted) skulls which was/is part of a local culture. After the body decayed the family took the skull and then painted it personalized to honor the family member, they also wrote the name on it. It was seen as a second funeral. It’s not clear why specifically these people were honored in this way but there’s a development in the art.
You can find many old castles and ruins here in Austria, many can be visited. Some offer amazing falconry shows too! There’s lots of local folklore and traditions too, some stories are really cool.
Maybe you could find some Videos about every State of Austria. Because this one features only Salzburg an the surroundings.
@2:38: we have a supermarket/grocery store in almost every town :D One thing we do not have in Austria is food shortage :D
Checkout Wachau in Niederösterreich
As a German, I have to say, if you love the mountains there are no better places than Austria and Switzerland. Bavaria just can't compete. When I was a child, we used to visit both countries for vacation trips on a regular bases. Stunningly beautiful❣️😍
But since I prefer the seaside, as an adult I moved to the baltic sea in Germany to be a happy "Fischkopp" (fish head) for the rest of my life😁
I am from Serbia. I live and work in Vienna right now and watch your clips.
Ich bin gesegnet in Österreich geboren zu sein. Das schönste Land der Welt ❤
No, not all are from Germany and Austria - I'm from Sweden. But I also like these countries and other around them. They are so romantic looking.
its one country 350years the german king was in vienna and today you found very importand things of the german history in vienna like the Imperial Regalia with the Imperial Crown from Western Germany, 2nd half of 10th century and many more. 1866 Otto von Bismark thinks there can be only one mayor power stay in germany and started a unloved brother war against austria to kick austria out of germany.
@@mariojakel5544 But it is one language in a very large region which is now peaceful, but with many borders, regrettably. Bismarck sure was controversial chancellor (President, Kansler). Vienna is such a huge cultural centre and still a dream to visit for people all over the world. I would love a reaction video!
"Why is it so green?"
If you see the weather forecasts
you will see it has a LOT of rain and snow
We watch 3Sat - a German language channel
that covers Austria, Switzerland and Germany
and Austria is usually covered with rain symbols.
Yeah, this year spring is incredible rainy in Austria, more than usual. We had already floods in some areas. The plants love it though
Yes the grass is always greener on the other side of the ocean. However, Austria also has its problems with the nature. It's not always nice.
@@UlliStein or on the other side of the Alps - that run down the spine of western Austria.
Thank you for your videos. I almost forgot how beautiful our country is, with warm regards from Vienna 🤗
Please watch the video „In the mood for Vienna“ to see more about the beautiful capital of Austria!
2:37 Austria has the Most dense Placement of grocery Shops in the world or at least Europe.
I live in rather small town and its five minutes to a shop and another five to the next.
6:00 a friend of mine owns a house with direct entrance to that lake... its fing awesome
2:40 funfact Austria is even one of the countries with the highest density of supermarkets, so yes we have access to groceries
I love the tunnel that leads to Hallstatt, i go there with my motorcycle every second time i ride, cause the sound of the bike in the tunnel is just eargasmic
05:20 I was a Mailman in Hallstatt for a few years and I had to walk to that house every damn day lol
Also beautiful places, Burg Hochosterwitz, Wörthersee and Milstätersee in Carinthia. There are a lot but this 3 are my favs.
I an Austria a so glad to live here. Funny to see the reactions, because for the most of us its normal living in this beautiful country.
I'd add Hintertux Glacier, which features summer skiing
I gotta admit Ryan Shirley gives amazing ideas on what places to visit, inspired some of my vacations, check out the Dolomites as well
I have already got around a lot in my life and as an Austrian I have to say that the young man who recorded the video actually recorded a few of the most beautiful places that are available from us. But the sun does not shine everywhere, that means, there are also dark sides! Tourism is partly annoying, you don't get any more because of people everywhere. The area of the recordings is also quite limited, because there are also a few places in Carinthia, Styria and even in the east of the country that are definitely worth seeing.
6:35 We were there after Legoland Deutschland in 2014 or 2015!!! The train and the hotel❤❤❤
Greetings from Austria Tyrol ^^ lovely to see that
Maybe we are living in a really small country, but I am proud of it, especially on the fact, that we are neutral together with switzerland, in the heart of europe. I live in western austria, Vorarlberg, close to swiss border. Together with the swiss, we do speak a special dialect, which is called "Allemannisch", which is very, very old. Our "Arlberg" region was and is a place for rich people to enjoy the winter - monarchs, kings, queens and celebrities, together with russian oligarchs love to do skiing there. I live in a lush an green region, called "Bregenzerwald", in a small village with a little below 1000 inhabitants. Seeing your reaction on our beloved little austria makes me really proud! Thanks for sharing that!
Servus from Austria to Indiana, always exited to see Americans get exited about Austria. You´re always welcome in Austria and in my hometown Graz in Styria / Austria.
Geh mit Amerikanern immer ins Zeughaus, denen haut's das Blech weg.
We did a tour with 4 days in Vienna, and 2 each in Salzburg and Innsbruck. We looooved those places. They were so beautiful, and great to visit. Anyone who is even thinking of it should go
Dude i have watched so many Videos, didnt See i havent even Subscribed... Dang... Did it now :) Please more reactions to austria!! Greetings from Austria :)
Beautiful nature in Austria and Salzburg is definitely worth a visit. I've been there many times during the holidays and it never gets boring. The alpine meadows exude a serene tranquility, with the sound of cowbells in the background. My son and his friends have done hiking and climbing holidays several times in Austria. They follow a chosen route and they go from the one alpine hut to another alpine hut. Beautiful nature and views along the way.
3:02 gosau actually isnt that expensive to live compared to other places in austria (like viennea or graz). most of the time the rural areas are pretty cheap, while the city is expensive af
My grandad was born in Vienna, he was an Austrain Pole My dads surname was Austrian but he chnaged it when he married due to xenophobia in the UK in the 1960s. Only visited once and then to Vienna such a beautiful city.
I live in Austria and u should defenently visit the counteyside. I dont really like Vienna there are so many drug dealers and criminals.
Spent a week in Kitzbuhel a few years ago...absolutely stunning! 👍🇬🇧
The salt of Hallstatt was probably mined since the Neolithic, but at least since 1500 BC (during the Bronze age) systematically. The town gave its name to the Hallstatt culture (800 - 400 BC) in Middle Europe, which marked the start of the expansion of the Celts. The name component "Hall" in southern German place names (here including Austria) often refers to salt mines; in some old Germanic languages "hal" could mean saltworks (but in northern Germanic 'hall' could also mean a hillside). Hallstatt is part of the state of Salzburg (which lit. means Salt Castle).
No, Hallstatt is in Oberösterreich (Upper Austria). As are some of the other lakes (Gosausee, Wolfgangsee-partly in Salzburg). There is also Hallein.
I walked around the Wolfgangsee yesterday. So beautiful. :-) Last day of the holiday before heading home. Austria is beautiful. :-)
I just waited so long for you to react to Austria 🔥
