  • Hello, and welcome to my ArmA series retrospective. I've been playing Bohemia Interactive's flagship title since 2002. My entire UA-cam journey has revolved around ArmA 3, so I wanted to take a look back at the series and reminisce on 20 years of incredible game play. Thank you, Bohemia Interactive, for the thousands of hours of enjoyment. I hope you all enjoy this personal ArmA history lesson. I'm interested to see how many others had experiences like mine. Happy holidays to all of you, and I will see you..in the next..video.

@@Trve_Kvlt As long as it has almost all of arma 3s engine capabilities and more (certain features, scripting capabilities... etc.) its gonna be fine. The main selling point for arma is its milsim aspects, its customization, its framework which allows us to make many great mods and missions. I would definetly like more vanilla content on launch (I hope they continue the 2035 setting) but as long as it has capabilities to MAKE great content, its gonna be alright. Look at Arma 3 for example

@@roland3405 If Reforger means anything, they might be returning back to their cold war gone hot roots, or even back to Operation Arrowhead era. Personally, the 2035 setting got old really fast, and the only thing that made it interesting were mods like Aegis. I cannot deny that Arma 3 was the best in the franchise so far, I mean it's still one of the most played games on steam. The big thing they need to improve on is the AI, and honestly they just need to make the next arma more like the VBS system that Bohemia produces for commercial training applications. 6:54 this is a great point like in arma 3 when adams just gets blown up by a mine and is gone instantly. to a new player who expects characters not to die so easily it really helps enhance the experience that you're in war and that your buddies are just human and can die pretty much instantly at any moment

    • @AH-64Delta

I remember when I first picked up the game, I happened to save just before it happened. When Adams stepped on the mine, I kept trying to go back and shoot the mine out from under his feet thinking "maybe bohemia scripted an alternate ending" until I realised it was a script. It was very sad.

I played the OFP demo for ages before it finally released. It was a true shift in gaming. Its crazy to see how gameplay and graphics have improved since then but the fundamental game is still there and unique.

It's still worth it... =P

So true about the lack of charm in Armed Assault compared to OFP. Not having a campaign with multiple voiced and named characters is a downside.

    Great video!
What I miss with OFP was the bullet explosions from let's say the A-10, or Huey cobra. There was a visceral feel of the yellow and black explosions on the ground. You just "felt" the damage.
Arma I : I remember being online, and many of the guys asked "how are you turning your head everywhere, while in combat?" I said "I'm using Track-IR". ( Either most flight simmers didn't try using it in Arma, or tmost guys from COD/MOH didn't know about track-IR.... I probably generated a ton of sales. :D )
ALL I play is heavily modded Arma II. STILL don't have a machine to play III yet. One day. But I'm still happy, cause II, is still a lovely time suck for me.

Awesome video Viper! Started playing OFP in 2003 when I was barely a 9 year old :) I remember the first time I managed to light up a bonfire via an init command in the edtior, found the mission files in which the bonfire is lit up in the mission beginning, opened the mission's PBO in WinRAR (IIRC) and found the init command there while searching for "fire" keyword. Without any help from the internet, dark times :).
What a mindblowing moment that was for a 9 or 10 year old, believe me.

Hey Viper, I love your love of Arma! Thanks for doing this it was great. So nostalgic! I had a very similar love for OFP from the start in 2001. It blew my mind that you could go where you wanted and solve problems in out of the box ways. The vehicles and combat gave a real sense of immersive atmosphere that was completely unique. I distinctly remember being amazed by the “real work physics” and the rag-doll death animations that I think still stand up as being awesome! :) …also great shout out to Dslyecxi - that guy is a bloody legendary inspiration!!! :)

I bought a nice 400mhz HP PC in 98, and got a Voodoo3 for my 13th birthday that year to install in it. The shift from thinking Goldeneye was a great FPS earlier that year, to playing Rainbow Six for the first time was like whiplash. SWAT 3 came out, then Operation Flashpoint came out the same year as Ghost Recon. It felt like it was the new trend to create these ultra realistic games that required as much brain as it did reflexes and skill, and they were only going too get better. But Ghost Recon and Rainbow six started leaning into the accessible console FPS market that was growing, and even Codemasters seemed to want to head in that direction with the later Op Flashpoint games...
But Bohemia has made nothing but strides in the market that they alone have stayed behind every step of the way. And with the modding community and Bohemia's approval of it, I've played scenarios and game overhauls that give me far more experiences within the milsim genre. Pretty much, ArmA games have been the only game you needed in order to play multiple milsim experiences from a plethora of creators. Arma has consistently been the game that brings so many genres of military and war simulation all together in one great game

Great video man! Nice to hear about your experience and love for the series. I still play the original OFP all the time. Just played it last night so I could see the Christmas Trees which the developers added as an easter egg when you play on the 24th & 25th of December. ...first time actually seeing that after playing this game for almost 20 years. I usually only play single player though, using the ECP - Redux 1.3 mod. When I see multiplayer sessions, there are usually mods required which I just don't have the patience to load up. I get my multiplayer kicks with Socom 2, now that the community has the servers up again. But yeah for Flashpoint, I have more fun nerding out on single player missions, and tweaking some of the parameters for MFCTI missions. Cheers to all fans of the original OFP. Thanks to the community and Bohemia interactive.

Hey Viper, I rarely comment on UA-cam, but your video encouraged me to. I was about 12 when I played the OFP demo over and over again. Like you, I was blown away by the game and its world. Though I wasn't good at it, I also built missions and campaigns and years later I still discovered so many mods and assets that you could download. I think I never finished the campaign back then (let alone Red Hammer or Resistance), but I loved the game despite its quirks. I am sure it also contributed to my decision to join the army. During that time, I was less interested, so I never really played ArmA (until last year or so, but it was quite underwhelming). What really got me again was ArmA II, as I really liked the scenario and the story. And of course the graphics. I also liked the Eastern European (let's say Czech) setting, not only because it reminded me of OFP, but also since the landscape is naturally quite similar to what we have here in Bavaria. Since my pc couldn't really handle it, it took another few years to finally complete the campaign along with the final mission, which took me multiple hours and two evenings. After that, I replayed and completed OFP, Red Hammer and Resistance for the first time. After the first missions, the outdated graphics were completely forgotten. With ArmA III it is the same, I bought the early-access version but I still haven't completed any campaign, once in a while I just try the editor and mods. The fact that even the vanilla game has received so many new features doesn't make it easier. Somehow I wasn't (and still aren't) hooked by the scenario, though it really looks and feels gorgeous. But sooner or later, I will find the time to play it properly. These days, I mostly play DayZ. For me, this game belongs in that list as well, it still feels like ArmA II (in a good way) and when I am walking through the woods of Chernarus, it always reminds me of the woods of Everon where you had to evade Soviet troops. Besides DayZ, I have never played multiplayer battles and even if I only use so little potential of the ArmA series, and even if there are times, where I pause for multiple months or play something different, I will always have a special love for these games. Sorry, this got a bit long... Anyway, thank you for the video and your mod lists, they are always very helpful as a guideline.

Funny, I actually know exactly where I was when OFP entered my life. On vacation in Hungary with my grandparents (I'm german) in 2002. I brought some gaming magazine with me and they had a large review about OFP: Resistance and they also covered the main game a bit. I already saw the cover of the original OFP in stores but haven't really paid attention yet. Can't recall why tho. And yeah I was pretty blown away. As a fan of airsoft and stuff like that it sounded absolutely perfect to me as a kid who only played shooters like Delta Force , BF 42, MoH and of course Half Life etc at the time haha. My deep appreciation and love for, and deep-dive into the series started a bit later tho with the first ARMA and exploded with ARMA II when I got involved in the community a bit and played what felt like thousands of mods. I'm still in absolute awe about this community and blown away by it and the content it created and keeps on creating, sometimes to the point of feeling bad for getting this stuff for free. I'm not joking.
    Stunning!!!

I remember when Operation Flash Point came out, but at that time, I was stuck on the Delta Force series of games and didn't realize there was anything bigger out there yet (Delta Force 2 multiplayer especially). And then, I started playing the Battlefield series games back when they were decent (BFBC, BF 2, BFBC 2). I was then one of those so fortunate Millennials to have left college and entered that lovely job market in 2008 right when the housing market crash pretty much destroyed any ability to purchase decent gaming hardware. At that time, I was living at home and after having submitted literally hundreds of applications, I finally landed a job as a seasonal employee at Lowe's. Eventually, my brother and I went in on a PS3 together and I bought Battlefield 3, which I played like it was the last game ever to be developed. I didn't learn about Arma 2 until one of my coworkers was like "Dude, Battlefield? Naw man, you should play Arma 2. It's waaaay better." And then, just like that, a spark ignited. I spent hours watching game footage on UA-cam, people working in the editor, people constructing hilarious abominations like cow-mounted PvP battles, etc. But at that time, I could hardly afford to pay my student loans each month, so I certainly didn't have enough to invest in a decent gaming PC. Arma 2 was a distant fantasy.
Eventually though, things did get better. I eventually landed another job that had absolutely nothing to do with my degree in linguistics (Japanese, Spanish) working on a Honda assembly line, which paid a whopping $11.35 an hour. At this time, Arma 3 was being teased online, so I decided that I was going to be ready for this title. The funny thing is that my credit union was actually the one who made things happen for me. I really needed a car at the time (commuting 1.5 hours one way to work daily), but I was having difficulty financing anything because I had virtually zero credit history (I hate credit cards). So anyway, my CU rep was like, "Hey, got a toy like an ATV or something that you want to buy just to get some history on your record? You could use a small signature loan." She was a little surprised when I asked if I could borrow $3000 in order to build a computer, but she totally went for it anyway.
So yeah, I built my first ever custom PC in 2013 right before game launch specifically for Arma 3. And with $3K to play with, I just went nuts. Intel Core i7 4770K, 32GB of 1866Mhz RAM, WD Black edition game drive (2TB), EVGA GTX 780. I had also been watching Linus's videos on NCIX Tech Tips and his eventual Linus Tech Tips channels for years preparing for the moment when I could afford an actual gaming rig. So I was SUPER ready to put this thing together in my Corsair Carbide Air 540 case and blow some shit up in-game. It was an incredible experience that really made me appreciate the entire process of building a PC and I made a vow to never purchase another prebuilt desktop system ever again.
As my system has seen many generational upgrades, my game drives haven't changed much. Arma 3 is still the only game I play consistently on a regular basis. There's just nothing else anywhere on the market that even comes close to the versatility of this platform. Single player, Co-op, PvE/PvP multiplayer, Eden editor, player hosted servers, TONS of unique and massive communities who commit to certain play styles, narratives, mods, etc. No other game is as open for possibilities as Arma 3 is, especially with the gaming and modding communities that continue to support it. I am just simply amazed every time I check out the Steam workshop and see SO MANY NEW mods being posted regularly. Like, this is an 8 year old game??? How amazing is that!!
Anyway, this ended up being a lot longer than expected, but I do find it individual journeys interesting and so I figured I'd share mine. There are certainly many paths to the top of the mountain. Hopefully soon, we'll discover an Arma 4 with Enfusion engine up there ;)

Man, this comment was definitely a ride that feels oddly familiar.
I look back at where I was and the things that led me to get into ArmA 3 and I just sit and wish I would have done it sooner. I actually started my UA-cam channel in 2016 but did crappy game play videos of Star Citizen (when we thought it would release last decade LOL), random ArmA 2 skirmishes, and eventually a couple ArmA 3 videos that are a couple of my oldest ones that I didn't delete because...well.. some nostalgia is cringe but its good to be able to gauge how far you've come when building something like this channel. I agree completely, the versatility and literal endless possibilities of ArmA 3 and its engine/editor is just second to none. I can't put it down no matter how hard I try, and now that I've built a community around this channel ArmA 3 is here to stay until ArmA 4 becomes reality. Ha.
Thanks for the great comment. :)

It's great seeing how each successive game improves on the formula, and it does it in a way that makes it hard to go back to older games. Makes me wish the older campaigns were ported or remade into the newer titles. I'm sure we'll see Cold War Rearmed again for ArmA IV, but to date the most complete version is in ArmA II, as it's the only one with full remakes of all three CWA campaigns.

People are researching the AI in the game trying to find the best combination of old mods, or trying developing their own, to make it as most realistic as possible. And this is not even a group of people, it's a few individuals doing their own thing. They hail arma 2's ai as the best in the series, and they test things so maniacally i certainly can't doubt them. You should try to check that out. It's a true rabbithole.
Btw i also played COD:UO back then and i still come back to it sometime. See you on BAS Historians server.

I remember 20 years back I bought "Flashpoint" too. My computer was one with "Windows ME " and I could not get it to run. I am not expert in computers and never been, but because of an employer/company agreement with Microsoft I could get a copy of "windows XP" and then suddenly I could run "Flashpoint". But because of lack of patient I never learned to play it. I died almost everytime after a few minutes.

Then operation flashpoint was a dream come true. I still have no clue how I got far into the campaign as a kid. (Tho I never finished it, I’d just make battles in the editor most of the time) 😂
And for Arma 2, my pc could barely run it at 20-30 fps yet I still played the cr*p out of it
I’m 26 now and I still love the Arma series. It’s the only one of its kind. AND I CAN RUN ARMA 3 AT 60 fps!!! 🤣

I didn't get in until ARMA 3 and I'm not yet able to edit my own scenarios. I'm heavily dependent on the mods. I'm strictly mouse & keyboard for now, but that's good enough for Ravage. Also don't have a good way to play co-op or multiplayer yet. I like the scenarios that have a mission and in Ravage lean towards those that offer a chance to escape at some point.

Younger generation nowadays wouldn't understand the feeling of playing Operation Flashpoint & Arma.
Sure Call Of Duty got cool campaigns, with scripted cutscenes & fast paced movement, but Operation Flashpoint & Arma is much more cooler because your movement is based on the weight of the weapons and tools you carry, you can command your own squad, it teaches you to be aware of your surroundings, instead of mindlessly running around. That is much more realistic.

I was kinda mad ASF when CODEMASTER and BHI went their separate ways being that I just picked up OFP Red RIver on console, and was hoping for a sequel too it after playing it for many hundreds hours. From that point on that's when I realized it is time to make the jump to pc gaming. Still got the game and the case for my xbox. the later ARMA titles didn't offer the length and depth.. and cohesion of storyline, for me opFlash remains a standalone achievement... and yeah i was nuts about the editor too ^_^ there was a time when i thought opFlash was almost photo-realistic, which speaks perhaps to my naivety, but also to the skilled sleight of hand they evidenced with their subtly washed out, photo-mapped, carefully lit presentation

Kind of ridiculous things like 3d trees that had a fixed level of detail, huge draw distances with people running around at those distances.. 3d explosions, pretty great sound, convicing sun model, sun rays, realistic eastern European lighting, sculpted faces that weren't all identical, realistic vehicle models, huge space.. I mean even then I accepted that there were stylistic choices about it that didn't look as snappy as CS or whathaveyou.. but I still thought it was a beautiful game.. the demo, in which you play the "ambush" mission, was a huge leap in gameplay, atmosphere and framing over, or at least away from, what I'd seen before

The best introduction to the series is the campaign for Operation Flashpoint. It starts you as a simple infantryman and gradually introduces other mechanics like stealth, command, various vehicles etc. If you can't tolerate the old graphics there's a fan remake of the campaign in Arma 3's engine called Cold War Rearmed (though it is a little buggy).
Arma Reforger is the latest and by the looks of it the smoothest in the series but is not a full series entry, it's more a preview of the new enfusion engine.
Arma 3 is imo the obvious recommendation since it's where most of the community is right now and is still going strong. The Bootcamp campaign and the Showcases will get you to grips with the various mechanics. Take it slow and remember that if you're curious about anything you can just spawn it in the editor and try it out.

Honestly you didn´t miss much not playing Red Hammer. It was made by Codemasters, not Bohemia, adds nothing new and the missions are barebones and unimaginative as far as I recall. And the final act where you turn against the Red Army and fight them is just... dumb.
If you do wanna experience the original OFP campaign from the Soviet side, there was a great mod called Retaliation - made by Russian modders - that did a much better job of presenting the story from the other side, with great, imaginative original missions, properly referencing/mirroring the OG campaign, having you play 4 different characters as well, and twisting the perspective (Americans being the bad guys here). Sadly it only covers it until the initial occupation of Everon and they never made a follow-up as far as I know.

COD was such a shit game series.. and still is to this day.. I've been playing ARMA since it was Operation Flashpoint.. I'm in my 60's now.. and still and even just about an hour ago I was in a game of Arma 3 with the new DLC and new sand dunes map.. I fell in love with this series when I first played Flashpoint.. I was hacking my Athlon CPU and over clocking it with Silver pen and crazy glue...lol my sys now is an i7 7700k with 1200watt PSU 64gbs 3200 ram 3 M2 1 tb drives and 3 1 tb SSD's and 2 HDD 4tbs .. 6 months ago I was running 2 RX 580 red devils then got my hands on the RX5700XT and never looked back.. 2 24" LG monitors on each side of an ASUS Tuf 34" curved screen 165hz .. I have seen guys run this is VR but I'm going to wait.. a lot of work and more money to get it running in VR.. and I read recently the new engine for ARMA 4 will be even better.. I hated COD and Rainbow Six after Redstorm stopped doing RS .. UBI did to COD what Disney did to Marvel
I mean C'mon you are suppose to be a specialist and trained extensively .. but you can't seem to pick up a fallen person's weapon or change a scope out or even a suppressor ... and don't get me started with the Battlefield series as the first one was their best where you didn't have some guy running around with a magic box of never ending ammo and tanks helo's jets that would regrow ammo in mid air... to me it just sucked and I left it for the kiddies and their consoles ... I am soo very thankful that BI didn't dumb down ARMA to fit on a console.. that would have destroyed the game.. I'm waiting with baited breath for the new Enfusion Engine and Arma 4... there is also another engine out there coming.. well it's more of an addon for the Unreal engine called Unrealwild.. only time will tell... thanks for the video and the look back.. was cool.. I have all the DLC's for ARmA3.. and all the past games in the series along with Flashpoint as well.. LOL I just looked at my Arma 3 and I have over 2600 hours... G'z I gotta get another life...
