  • Another translation I did of a passage from an interview in 'Entretiens'; this time by Jean-François Duval in 1979.
According to Cioran, as long as man has kept in touch with his origins and hasn't cut himself off from himself, he has resisted decadence. Today, he is on his way to his own destruction through self-objectification, impeccable production and reproduction, excess of self-analysis and transparency, and artificial triumph. A bit more on this which you might find clearer/interesting. Wiki says: "According to Cioran, as long as man has kept in touch with his origins and hasn't cut himself off from himself, he has resisted decadence. Today, he is on his way to his own destruction through self-objectification, impeccable production and reproduction, excess of self-analysis and transparency, and artificial triumph."

Finally, I totally agree with you. What we need and what we want don't go together. But we just can't help ourselves. We give in to desire. As a species, we are probably most likely doomed. No matter how enlightened we become, we still have this itch, like a hook in our nose. We want more, but we don't need more. Yep. Screwed.

    "Je suis foutu"
    I'm screwed?
    "On est ..."
    We are ...?
I like French, the way it sounds and looks.

I think more along the lines of it being predetermined. I am very fatalistic, as Cioran is in this video. It's that from the very start man is a condemned animal; condemned because he cannot have this kind of relationship you speak of. He has separated himself from the other animals and nature; he has a thirst that none of the other animals have. The allegory of the Fall and the Garden of Eden in Genesis is this. This is the thing that drives him towards his inevitable doom.

I think the only next step is to learn how to be okay with being screwed.

Nietzsche proposed Superman, and he didn’t know the true essence of man, i also noticed in one of his aphorism Cioran wrote Author of Zarathustra as Too Naive

I think this video more accurately describes what you were trying to say. It seems intelligent design gives us the opposite desired effect. The longer we treat the universe as a fully automatic spring-loaded mechanism, we will produce a malfunctioning society. But if we can learn to have a symbiotic relationship with nature, we might be okay.

    "It's screwed"
Hah. I just thought that was amusing. It's the "truth" though.
What is the original word/words in French?
