I’ve just come to the conclusion that I’m going to use the straps and strap to the crossbar like everyone’s saying. And use some extra straps I have at home
Same….. NOT on that bottom “loop” of the J-Hook, you have to go UNDER you cross bars, just trying to help anyone that’s not familiar, repeat…. Don’t strap it like that, most J-hooks are pretty weak unless you have Thule / Yakima / Top shelf equipment. Even with those they advise the whole “under bar” thing clearly.
The rack is a fixed point lol I would recommend getting actual ratchet straps and feed them through the scrubber holes I’ve never seen anyone strap it like this guy so yeah don’t do this 😂
I see a lot of people asking about longer trips on the freeways and highways. Instead of wrapping around the lower part of the hook, go the whole way to the crossbar. For the longer trips, most J hook sets come with tie down for the bow and stern of your kayak. An extra ratchet strap over the top on connected to the crossbars on those long voyages too never hurt anyone. If your driving hours to your location, taking off an extra strap or two off shouldn't be a big deal upon arrival.
I couldn't agree more with David's statement. Maybe a heavier duty strap and you should be fine. If you really wanted to, you could add bungees or straps to front and back tied to bumpers or something. But I've never had issues with the way I showed
We don't see much movement with this on ours. I take mine down the freeway on shorter trips this way. If you are going long distances, I would think about tying down the ends as well. I have taken them on several hour drives this way with not tying down the ends and have not had any problems. But, more safety is never a bad thing.

There is absolutely NO WAY I’d tie my board down like this. First of all, my boats are too bit. Second of all the boats are not secluded to the car. Just the hooks and what if (I know it’s a small chance) the hooks fail? Now your boats are on the highway possibly causing an accident.
Need to have longer straps and to wrap around the roof rack then back up to the cinch point never rely just on the jrack especially one with hand tightened keepers…even nylon nut ones I still wouldn’t trust 100% it can always vibrate loose
It looks like you added some nuts on the bolt between the hand tighten nut and the metal piece that goes under the cross bar. am I right? I thought about doing this. My J hooks cannot tighten to my cross bar because the hand nut starts to contact the piece of metal that does under the cross bar.
Just bought my 1st kayak this past weekend. Planning on taking it out on the water this coming weekend. Though I'm no dummy, I actually tied mine on improperly the first time. It didn't fall off, but it did shift while driving, and actually dented the kayak slightly. I found this short clip very helpful. Thank you for sharing. I hate relying on the internet to learn how to do things, but it certainly is very helpful. Thanks again. Maybe you could share some tricks and tips for kayaking for beginners. Maybe just some lesser known things that might be very helpful. Thanks again. Tim
Man!! I spent an hour trying to do this this morning and after thus video my misses doubts my manhood. Thanks and a few plus cuss words for showing me up.
Your straps are too short. They should go through the cross bar of the roof rack. Not attached to the J hook. You should take this video down, and redo it.
I'm not a 100% sure but I think he's trying to address how to use the straps that you are given with the from the manufacturer. And good point, it does seem to be enough strap to also go under the rack.
Thank you. Just installed the J-hooks. Came with straps, 10 ft. Wanted me to run them through the car. (Smirking) watched your video. Thank you makes more since. I would like to tecommand going around crossbar should J-hooks get loose. Thanks again - Bryan, Salem, OR
Most straps are not long enough to go all the way around. The way I'm showing on here is how our j-hooks(as well as most j-hooks) are intented to be used. Check with your manufacturers instructions though.
We use just the straps and have never had a problem. We take them in long trips too. More tie downs is a good safety measure I guess, but we've never seen the need
If your kayaks are not tapered at the front and back the kayaks can shift frontward or back. This means they should be anchored at the front and back too. Mine don't have a good way to anchor in the front or back.
@@drapermiketapered to a point at the front and back. Middle section is wider. He’s saying if your kayak is the same width the entire length to tie down the front and back so it can’t slide either way.
The instruction starts at 1:20
You need longer straps and wrap them around the crossbars, not to the j-hook
Yeah needs to go around the crossbar! Otherwise thank you.
Don't rely on the jrack. Always strap through the roof rack on the car.

Straps are supposed to go through jbar wrap around under the crossbars. 2:30
Exactly. If the carrier fails, a kayak that is not secured to the rack crossbars will leave your roof for parts unknown.
yes agree this is basically not very secure
I wouldn't recommend anyone strap boats down like this, they need to be secured to a fixed point. Side, or cross rails of the vehicle ideally.
Wrong

Installed the racks yesterday and picking up a kayak today. Been nervous about the process. This was really helpful! Thank you!!

You skip the lower part of the J hook or go around it and then the crossbar?
Perfect video thanks i just bought my two new kayak racks now im confident tying them down thanks😅
This doesn’t look safe u do u but u won’t catch me strapping mine down like this
I always thought the j rack is to hold the kayak but strap around the bar is the one that truly secured the kayak.
I just read the directions on mine it says you're doing that wrong you don't put the straps on the holder at all they go through the luggy track
Thanks- bought a new set of rooftop carriers and kept over thinking it. This rocked.
Do not do this! Strap to the cross bars of the actual roof rack in case the J racks comes off.
why do you let the straps hit the paint work
You’re missing the front and back straps... when kayak can move in the front and the back
The kayak is bowed, so as long as the straps are tight, the kayak is not moving past the straps.
Your buckle is too close to the J hook. And as mentioned, catch the bar on the way around.
Thank you! But is this a good system if your driving 8 hours at like 70 mph?
Personally I would use same method but ratchet straps are more reliable. The straps in video have been down to fail or come lose.
I couldn't agree more with David's statement. Maybe a heavier duty strap and you should be fine. If you really wanted to, you could add bungees or straps to front and back tied to bumpers or something. But I've never had issues with the way I showed
Do your kayaks still move? I used this method and still feel as though they aren’t stable enough to go on freeway/long trips
We don't see much movement with this on ours. I take mine down the freeway on shorter trips this way. If you are going long distances, I would think about tying down the ends as well. This video saved my marriage
What happens when the strap slips off where it's placed?
Great guide you save me and my dad from panicking so thank you
I was overthinking this so much - thanks for the tip!
Do this and you will lose your kayak

Not correct way
Wrong.

My J hooks cannot tighten to my cross bar because the hand nut starts to contact the piece of metal that does under the cross bar.
My straps are long enough to wrap around my kayak twice. I was doing it wrong this whole time.

After 2 years, how's the Kayaking life, Tim?
My Thule J-hooks are open at the lower end. Should I be tying them down to the roof runners themselves then?
Man!! I spent an hour trying to do this this morning and after thus video my misses doubts my manhood. Thanks and a few plus cuss words for showing me up.
Yea this was very helpful and I’ve put my straps on a different way. But similarly Thanks for the explanation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍
Nice bro. Really appreciate it. Could have been a bit shorter though.
Simple video but very useful, I’m picking up my two kayaks from the shop and had no idea how to secure them to my j hooks! Thanks!
Hi happy weekenders.. how does it hold up on a high going 70ph…
Is the roof rack bars round? Mine keep falling over no matter how tight
Thanks man ! I appreciate the video !
A lot of talking but you didn't show how to tie down the front and back.
Does it matter which end of the kayak is positioned on top of the car?

No wonder my yak keeps loosening up. I've been strapping it wrong. Thank you!

I've been overthinking it lol
Awesome, thanks so much!
Thanks a lot for showing that!
Super helpful I couldn't figure that out...😂
Why does strapping it over the top work better than all the way under and back over?
Most straps are not long enough to go all the way around. The way I'm showing on here is how our j-hooks(as well as most j-hooks) are intented to be used. Check with your manufacturers instructions though.

Good video
😐……..
hey guys 😄
Thanks man
Are they safe to just use the straps. I see other people on yt using like paracord to tie the ends down as well which seems dumb to me.
We use just the straps and have never had a problem. We take them in long trips too. More tie downs is a good safety measure I guess, but we've never seen the need
If you tie down the front keeps kayak from turning at high speeds like a highway
Thanks!
Activities!!
Thanks!
Great, good video...straight to the point.
Thanks this was very helpful 🙏

What do you mean tapered in front?

Yes please dont do this. Brandon is totally right. I have almost same setup. It needs to go under the roof rack rails then up through the clamp.
Great video, super informative. Thank YOU!
Awesome, thanks. Sometimes the most obvious answers need someone to explain.
