As a gas technician, I'd like to add some important tips to this. You can turn off that gas valve fast, slow, doesn't matter. But when you turn it back on, it has to be done in a very slow manner, or the incoming high pressure can slam into the regulator and puncture the diaphragm. Also, today's appliance all have safeties on their pilots that prevent them from being "on" when you turn the gas back on. Thermocouples shut them off after a minute with no lit pilot to energize the safeties. Unless you have some really old POS, or maybe a burner left on with a range, you don't need to worry about having a pilot suddenly running when you turn the gas back on. If unsure, mark the dials on the meter and watch the meter for a good half hour to see if they move. Obviously make sure no appliances with automatic ignition suddenly fire up. Such as power vented appliances, or you'll have to try the dial test again... The dial test is also an easy test for anybody if they suspect a gas leak.
+bodybuildingking This need to turn gas back on slowly may be the reason that some utility companies warn you not to do this yourself but to call the utility to come out and do it. A punctured regulator means that full street gas line pressure might exist in your home, which can cause poisoning or an explosion.
The main thing to be aware of is that a lot of gas appliances have pilot lights. If the gas is off, these go off. And when you turn the gas back on you the gas can seep into your house since the pilot light is not lit. Make sure you identify all the items that use natural gas and make sure they are fully turned off, including the valve that goes to the pilot light. Then turn the main gas on. Then turn each appliance on one at a time.
Thank you for the info! My mom is in the early stages of dementia and keeps turning the oven on to heat the house, bad idea, especially cause she keeps forgetting and sounding the alarms. Now I can go to work knowing I won't come home to a burnt down house. I'm very relieved.
Thanks - You confirmed what I suspected...my cut off valve is the same place and is identical to yours. The gas distribution bus down stream of the meter is in a really bad location in my condo which I'll like my HVAC man to fix for me.
P.S. if you are still concerned about doing it yourself, I highly recommend your have a professional do it. You also want to turn on the gas valve slow, don't turn it on really fast. Sometimes you can blow the gas regulator if you turn it on too fast.
After staying home from work for a day and seeing no one from Entergy, only to have them come by at some point to turn the gas on and then back off, and then having a representative claim they never came out in the first place, I'm very happy you made this video. Being an astronaut on the planet Tard, seems like I have to do everyfkn thing myself.
DO NOT operate the valve that is before the regulator. It is most often on high pressure. A lot of the older ones are difficult to turn and you could snap the valve or make the valve start leaking. Gas companies now install "customer valves" and they are the same valve, but AFTER the meter. So its on low pressure. Use that one!!
Some UA-cam videos, can get you in a lot of trouble! This is one that could cause you a lot of problems! Don’t operate that valve, call your provider, they will come out, secure the valve, than, after making your repairs, call them back, they can properly test your lines, insuring you have no leaks, and than restore your service! We aren’t here to make your life hard, but to help you protect your life and property!
Mike, my Gas Shut-Off had a small set screw holding the valve in the open position. I loosened the set screw and the valved freely turned. Also, look at the valve closely as it will only turn one direction. It only rotates 90°, OPEN or CLOSED. Also, since my gas meter is old and been through many seasons here in Michigan I went ahead and gave it a shot of WD-40 to loosen it up a but. Hope this helps
Your stove will continue to burn until all the gas in the line is used up. Years ago NASCAR had a rule that everyone used the same size fuel tank. Some of the race teams stuck by that rule but added an extra 20 feet of fuel line from the tank to the engine. All that extra fuel line held enough fuel to make an extra 2 laps while everyone else was running out of gas!
I finally gave in and quit trying..The neighbors proly thought I lost my damn mind being outside in the dark with a flash light fucking around with my gas meter 2 hours every night for two weeks
I need some help here. The gas company turned my gas off when I was not home to replace the gas service riser that goes to the meter. They are wanting to come into the house to turn my appliances back on. I cannot be there when they want as I travel alot for work. How do I turn the gas back on? Will your video fix the problem?
My meter situation outside looks EXACTLY like the one in the video. I lost my job so the gasman turned off the meter. I'll have to rob a bank or knock over a 7-11. In the meantime, I turned the gas back on according to your video. However, I noticed I can turn the gas back on and move that valve more than 90 degrees past the "on" position (pointing straight up). Should I turn it past 90 degrees until it stops? I just did as shown in the video and turned it only 90 degrees and I did it very slowly.
But how were you able to do that when they put a lock on the meter? Covid messed me up as I had to help my Family so they shut my gas off. Been trying to get the money together before the real cold sets in or the pipes will freeze.
The real problem is they arbitrarily decide who qualifies for utility assistance & who doesn’t. Their schedules are unfair NOT based on your housing expenses like what one pays in mortgage but it seems people that have alot of dependents automatically qualify in line w/their income or whether or not they have income at all. Not worth taking the gas or they’ll charge w/tampering & it’s just a matter of time before they discover it.
@@revrotunda3206 Two years is an eternity so I didn't even remember this till I saw your comment. I don't think there was a 🔒. I think they shut it off first, then eventually they out a 🔒 on it.
i can't find the gas meter in my house? where can it be? i have the apartment in the house with several other apartments, is there a gas meter for the whole house, only one, or one for every apartment, and how can i find it?
If you're observant enough to figure it out by looking at it don't bother touching it. Plus that valve is likely going to leak when you turn it. The grease seal will be compromised especially in cold conditions.
Hey I need help I think my neighbors are stealing gas from me . My bill came extremely high and I’m barely ever home and like to be in a cold house. How to I find out if they are stealing my gas ?
I know this is late, but to anyone with this problem, it's more likely a leak unless you can tell the line has been actively tampered with. Sniff around for any suspicious smells (gas usually smells like rotten eggs), and contact your gas company immediately to tell them what's up. They can send out a professional to come and make sure there isn't a leak.
Damn it, thought I could just turn it back on after the gas man never came back. Paid the bills, just gets off work early. Shame since I really wanted pizza...oh well, I guess I know how to do it now in case of emergency.

I'd like to add, do not turn this valve. It belongs to the utility and you can be charged with tampering with company property, unless it's an emergency and you need to deactivate your gas supply. It maybe be different where you live, but where I am, any piping before the meter isn't yours to touch. Also, never turn it as fast as this guy does when turning it back on because your regulator can fail.
Also, if you do do this, make sure the core of the valve is turning, by looking at the nut on the opposite side from the place you put your wrench on. If you twist your core, expect a large bill from the gas company to come replace it. :)

Doubt the gas company wants you turning your gas on and off at the meter. The meter is their property. You should really have a valve on your own fuel line. At the very least, just operate the valves on the outlet side of the meter.
I live in Alaska and we just had a big 7.0 earthquake on 11/30/18, and I find it so ironic that this guy in the video mentions "if you have a big earthquake and you're not sure of the integrity of your lines"....
what is the delivery pressure to that regulator? did you explain to people that if you turn the gas on too fast you can damage the regulator and cause gas to escape from the vent on the reg? how about explaining the relighting process or maybe the fact that it is against federal regulations for an unqualified person to touch that valve?
You neglected to point out that "your" meter and the valve you are tampering with are actually the property of your natural gas provider. You should caution people to contact their provider if they have concerns about their meter or any other aspect of their natural gas service
That is true. And in most communities the gas company will turn off and on your gas at no charge, especially in case of an emergency. But in some communities, if it's not an emergency and all you want to do is work on your pipes etc., some companies will charge you for turning off the gas. You are allowed in most locations to turn your own gas off.
+HowToWith GEO In some locations you are NOT allowed to turn the outside valve yourself (to avoid poisoning or explosion as described above), and there is no charge for the utility company, which owns the valve, to come out to your house. If you are a home owner or a renter, you have the right to call your gas company and ask about their policies.
Don't do this unless you have no other choice. Not all situations are the same. If you don't properly take care of the pilots in some situation you can release gas inside. Also the gas meters are owned by the company's not the homeowner. The makes the company liable for matanence and care. You actually want this. But it makes it illegal to tamper with it. For sure in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota, you can be fined and have your gas rights removed. They will make you go to court to prove you're responsible enough to have them back. Its awful. If you are having an emergency companies have 24hr gas emergency phone lines. In the event of an emergency they will shut it off for you. They will also check for leaks, respond to explosions as well as CO leak emergencies. They will even call for police or ambulance if you need it.
