the biggest thing is import tax that is what raises the price of goods. For the USA the tax can be 0% - 37%. In Ireland, the standard VAT rate is 23%. So when it comes to the price of an item you can blame your goverment too.
In the Midwest and some other parts of the Country you might find gas for 3-4 dollars a gallon but here in California, I paid $5.36 a gallon today. The cheapest cigarettes are 10-11 dollars a pack, not sure how that compares to elsewhere.
Just in America alone, there are approximately 769,000 beef growers, 24,000 dairies, 67,000 pig farms, 168,000 chicken farms, and 4,500 fish farms. One of the reasons why these things may be cheaper in the US is simply because of the size of the audience purchasing them. America is rapidly approaching 400 million people. Most countries in Europe have anywhere from 5 million to 70 million people. That's a much lower number of people buying items. So for the company to make a profit, they have to charge more per item. Whereas in the United States, there's a larger pool of people buying them, allowing them to lower the price a little bit. I have to admit to being surprised about the cost of cigarettes. They are taxed out the wazoo here in America. So I just assumed that they would be more expensive here, especially as I know how they're priced in South Africa and they are much more expensive here. But apparently you are correct in saying they are more expensive in Europe than they are here. Maybe that's because we have more tobacco Farmers than you have, and that keeps the cost of production down? Or maybe this is another situation where the pool is always going to be larger just because the population at large is much bigger. I'm really surprised you didn't bring up the fact that teeth whitening products are cheaper here. I've heard you mention it several times.
I was just told May 2024 Starbucks is running about seven dollars for a grande in California. Maybe knock off a dollar or two in the central part of the country.

On my phones I’m paying $228 monthly for 2 lines with total unlimited coverage mostly because of the initial contract with the provider. Cell Phone Bill: 42.38 USD after tax. Unlimited Text, Talk, Data. "Unlimited" Data is up to 15 gigabytes of high speed. After that, they can throttle my speed if they want to (as in during times of high congestion). It never happens cause I'm not in a heavy populated area, but it can happen.
Most low cost mobile phone carriers in U.S. charge $25/month unlimited call, text, data, and hot spot for 1 device. The only issue is there is no international roaming for most countries/states except Canada, Mexico.
Hands down, cigarettes are cheapest in Virginia and North Carolina (where they're made), because you don't bite the hand that feeds you. You can get off-brands for three dollars and some change per pack, and even cowboy killers are just under five bucks a lot of places in Virginia. I don't smoke, but I hear you can get them for free at the Phillip Morris plant in Richmond.

From what I've heard, the price of "petrol" in Europe and the U.K. includes pay as you go auto insurance. Is this so? FYI, our insurance here in Washington State, U.S., costs us around $1000 plus/year for two cars. So the cost of auto transport may not be that different, perhaps even cheaper "across the pond"?

One thing about gas prices comparisons is the octane level. Petrol in Ireland would be considered premium gasoline in Canada (and I presume the US; it's been awhile since I filled up there). The advertised Canadian prices are for lower ("regular") octane fuel. The price gap narrows when you compare Irish petrol prices to premium gas prices. It's still a bit more in Ireland just not as bad as one might initially think. Still I go with as fuel efficient as I can in either location. 🙂

I pay $25/m with unlimited data for my phone plan that uses Verizon. I’d say cost of living is more expensive in the US but salaries are often higher to compensate. Hence the US being #2 on GDP PPP. Also it’s always best to go to a local coffee or donut shop imo . There’s a lot of local coffee shops here.
In northern California an iphone 15 Promax costs $1200, my phone bill (2 phones) is about $210 per month with a police officer discount, gas is about $5.50 a gallon. I'm Curious about the tax comparison. In California we pay a fortune in taxes.
Bakersfield in California is an oil town, yet it pays more for gasoline than many places in the state. First of all, the quality of most of the oil drilled in that area is more suited for lubrication of machinery than for production of gasoline, and though the area has a refinery or two, most of the oil has to go down to Los Angeles to be refined, and then the gasoline has to be shipped back up to Bakersfield. So, they pay a lot more than many places in the state despite being an oil town.
You bought a phone that costs more than a ps5 and a gaming laptop. It is a phone dude. Do not complain about taxes if you are so rich that you spend 1200 on a phone. Even a 50 dollar phone can do what yours does.

Well, this is where Canada truly shines. Everything and I do mean everything cost 35 to 40% percent more than the highest prices in the US or Europe and Asia usually. If we were to have something cheaper the government slaps a tax on it to make it cost more. Gas from Alberta Canada sent by pipeline to the US is cheaper by 30 to 40 cents than the service station 100 yards from the refinery. It's just the way of things.
why does your postage cost so much? it costs almost double the price to send a package right over the border to Canada, than it does to send it over a whole ocean to England? my theory is that the canadian post office is having a beef with the us postal service

I can still buy a pair of "Rustlers" for around $14, but branded Levi 501s even on Amazon start at $49. And they don't fit right.
You can still get pretty good deals on Levis if you order from their own site or go into their factory outlet stores. They always have a sale its just hard to order them online because when they show up a lot of the time the color is completely different or they don't fit. I think some of it is they are made in so many countries that and they have so many different materials they use. They use a lot of jeans that stretch now that I kinda like but some stretch so much you have to buy 1-2 sizes smaller than you normally would. Some of the stuff that isn't denim too seems to run really small. Its best to go to their outlet stores but even then if you order from them online and have an outlet close by you can just return the stuff to the outlet and not have to ship it back.

Regional pricing for consumer electronics used to be a thing in the U.S. before the advent of the internet. An RCA camcorder would sell for $1300+ on the West Coast but only about $700 or less in the Midwest.
Diane, currently in Houston, Texas, regular unleaded gasoline is $0.83 usd per liter.. I have lived overseas.
My phone bill is about $368 (about 339 Euro) per month. That includes 5 lines, with unlimited talk, text, and data. It also includes insurance and payments on the phones themselves.
You shouldn't be paying more than $50 a line. You can find plans for $40 a line. Google Fi is $200 for 5 lines.
Fun Fact: In Oakland, CA you pay the advertised price + state tax + everything you had in your car + the cost of the windows that were on your car for each product you buy.
the biggest thing is import tax that is what raises the price of goods.
Most of that difference is due to taxes.
South Dakota; Montclairs-$4.37 a pack, Camel Blues-$9.83, Winston Reds-$11.00.
Thanks for the video Diane and for all that you do for your channel! Have a great week and be well! 👋😎🌹❤️
Same to you!
Just in America alone, there are approximately 769,000 beef growers, 24,000 dairies, 67,000 pig farms, 168,000 chicken farms, and 4,500 fish farms. This doesn't include the tens of thousands of vegetable farms and orchards. America produces far more food than it can use and there is no reason whatsoever for food inflation in America or the slightest lack of food.
There is a huge benefit of living in a country that has such a massive food industry. 😋
Inputs into ag products. Natural gas, fertilizer, fuel for machines, etc. All when up.
$25 dollars per line a month, 10 gigs of data, we pay a total of $190 for the 5 lines, this includes the purchase of the 5 android 5g phones. Each phone is about $14 a month. Plus my screens on my phone are bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro. After 2 years the bill will drop to $125 for 5 lines, unless we want new phones.
Hi Diane, I'm coming over from Luis (L3WG), who suggested I visit your channel. Through Luis, I have viewed your channel here & there. Now, I will see more of you, I suppose . Good to meet you.
Last time I went to Dublin, I went to Butlers for coffee a lot, because they had chocolate, too.
😂 I know what you mean. I always order a coffee and they give you a free chocolate… I’d be better off just buying a lot of chocolate.
Gonna have to try that next time. So I guess agalway doesn't have EVERYthing....
Fuel is much higher taxed in Europe, I think the iPhone and high end Androids are also taxed higher (VAT is 18% on most while US sales tax is from 0 to 8.5% depending on the State)
Paid $3.06 per gallon in West Virginia this weekend
In New Hampshire, we pay about $9.25 for Marlboro, but $19.64 in New York City for the same pack
Hey Diane, Hope you are doing as well as you seem. I love your videos. This one killed me, I only pay $15 per month Unlimited everything on Mint Mobile. I usually use between 6-10 Gigs per month so I really need it. Cigs are basically the same the world over. I haven't been to Ireland in about 4 years but back then 20 cost me about $15 (little over 10 euro) Here 20 costs (cheapest) generic $8.75 to premium $15.00 . Keep up the amazing work and please give Chewie a hug from me and
Stormy.
Excelsior!

If you just want regular everyday coffee, don't waste your money on Starbucks! McDonalds,
Dunkin', Burger King, and any number of service station/ guickie stores, will get you great
cup of coffee for a lot cheaper. And at a lot of places, FREE REFILLS!.
Thanks for giving me the idea for Ice Cream. Strawberry Cheesecake is my favorite.
Oooh great choice
@@DianeJennings Thanks Diane Treat Yourself and Chewie to some good treats.
Thanks for sharing these things Diane!
Thanks for watching!
1:31 no surprise there
Thanks for visiting the US, can't wait for your next trip!
Can't wait! 🥰
Phone resellers have cheap plans like Mint and Cricket- I pay 30$ total.
We had a retail business and thought we priced things fairly but nothing was selling. We tripled the price and couldn't keep things in stock.
On my phones I’m paying $228 monthly for 2 lines with total unlimited coverage mostly because of the initial contract with the provider. I never use that much though so I’ll be able to get a much better deal when I change my coverage after the contract expires in about 6 months. But yeah, it’s painful.
I use track phone, 20 a month unlimited and 2 gig data which rolls over, about 73 gb saved up right now,
British Columbia,Canada. About 90$ per month for phone
Same in Ontario
I'm curious how the costs for housing, both buying and renting, is - particularly per square foot
Caveat: My phone plan is $70 a month, though, but it includes unlimited everything throughout North America.
About $220 a month. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch. It goes up every year with no change in plan.
Gas today in NH can run from $3.50 - $4.50/ gallon.
Happy Monday! I'm really enjoying this video. Have a great week.
Thank you! You too!
I had Verizon (the largest cell phone company in the USA) for 3 years for unlimited talk and text but only 5 gigs of data per month. And it crept up to 100 USD per month.😮
Thanks for the tip Brian! OMG that really would add up
It's funny that the ice cream brands you say in the video aren't the cheap ones in the US.
Yes, I know there’s a premium brand, so I just use them as an example 😊
From what I've heard, the price of "petrol" in Europe and the U.K. includes pay as you go auto insurance. Is this so? FYI, our insurance here in Washington State, U.S., costs us around $1000 plus/year for two cars. So the cost of auto transport may not be that different, perhaps even cheaper "across the pond"?
Wow!! You do really well at the editing! So I was rewinding to watch your views and even the waiting graphics were dope! Good for you.
Glad you enjoyed it! ED works really hard on the edits, but the premier Accountant you mean? That’s just a preset on UA-cam so I can’t take credit.
@@DianeJennings Noooo!!! Brocephus!!!... It may be a generational thing, but I am for real a rocket scientist (kinda sorta) but it would take me hours to figure that out. Great job Ed and to you for having an excellent crew!
Haagen Dazs is made in NY. That's why it's cheaper here.
I think the price of gas is exactly why Europeans have small cars & manual transmissions. Anything to decrease the consumption 😊
I paid the equivalent of US8.50/gallon for gasoline in Ireland nine years ago.
Editor Diane!! OMG Love her!!
Yes to the comparison video!
I'll have to see UA-cam didn't send me a notification. Anywho, very interesting! I think gas in Germany was $9.77/gal after I did the conversion when I visited in 2011.
Mobile phone plans are outrageously high in Canada. I've gone from paying $100 (€68) to less than €10 ($15).
My phone bill is roughly 130 EUR. But it also has a 75GB data + Disney/Hulu/ESPN subscriptions. And yes, I'm looking at lowering the data plan since I hardly ever use it.
Hi Diane. YES to the supermarket price comparison video! For Haagen Dazs what's the best temporary sale price you've seen in Europe recently? I've seen $3.50 for 473 ml because it was buy one get one free.
Wow! I actually don’t think I’ve ever seen Häagen-Dazs on sale here 😮😮😮
I pay $25/m with unlimited data for my phone plan that uses Verizon.
I’d say cost of living is more expensive in the US but salaries are often higher to compensate. Hence the US being #2 on GDP PPP.
Also it’s always best to go to a local coffee or donut shop imo . There’s a lot of local coffee shops here.
10:04 Ben & Jerry’s costs over $12 aud, it’s a tragedy
0:08 Diane’s ventriloquism game keeps improving😂

I was too busy with the chat, now I hafta go back and Watch the vid!
Ahaha my evil plan works 😈

I pay $15/month for my cell phone service with Mint. Not sure where you got that our plans are expensive. Theres actually a lot of plans around the same price available here. So more than half the cost of your "cheap" plan in euros.
so glad i quit smoking when i did. i'm much to cheap to pay those prices
Chewie says of course I would like a treat. And a walk would also be nice. Then he said something about stealing the blanket? But I couldn't figure out who was taking it. 😃
Everyone have a wonderful day.
Hey Diane sorry no joke today. I spent the last 3 days moving, which I hate. I can barely move right now, and I get to unpack everything too.
I did send you a meme. I think you’ll like it. Did I mention how much I hate moving
I saw the meme! Oh, moving is really hard.. Have a nice Epsom salt bath.
**cries in single pair of JNCO jeans I spent $200 on last year because nostalgia for my high school self image and having grown up money is a hell of a drug** ... at least my Mint mobile phone plan is only $25 a month (thanks Ryan Reynolds!)
We are allowed to do that, though! If they brought you joy, it was worth it
$18/month. 10gb data but I almost always just use wifi, so no GB used.
When we talk about cost we say for example $5.55 is five dollars and fifty five cents. Saying five dollars and fifty five sounds a little strange
I remember when a pair of shrink-to-fit Levi 501s could be found on sale for $15, and found any time for under $20. AND they were proper 501s. I've stopped wearing them long since because they don't fit right, but the price is _stupid_ anymore.
@@JesseLJohnson Nah, I just stopped even trying. I had a few old pairs that still fit and I kept trying to buy new ones in the same size. But they didn't fit. Even when the pair I was wearing with the same size on it fit perfectly. (I wore the same size from the early 80's until 2005 or so. I've still got a couple pairs of 34-34s but I can't fit in them anymore. Hope reigns supreme though!
I have no idea how they do sizing for shirts and jackets. I ordered 2 western snap up jackets. One for me and one for my dad 5 years or so ago. I got myself a 2x and got dad a large maybe it was xl. My dad was only probably 140lbs or so at the time. The 2x fit him perfect. I try to put it on and its like Chris Farley fat guy little coat. 2x normally would give me plenty of room to have more clothes on underneath and still have plenty of room. I could barely get an arm through a sleeve. I have tried on some in store too and its all the same. They do have big and tall now and I need the tall anyway really and I ordered a 2xt jean jacket and it fits perfect other than the sleaves being so damn long they about hang down to my knees. Buy a normal 2x though and its short and about the same size as at best a large from anybody else. I never liked 501s anyway never bought them. I like the new 541 though and the 502. The shirts and jackets though its like they are using kids sizes. If you washed any of it would probably be baby sized
No I live in the country in Florida. We have these stores called the Dollar Tree and Dollar General which makes it easier. Oh but I pay $100 for my phone plan but I have unlimited data.
Actually, Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs often go on sale for as little as $3 for a pint.
In Minnesota, my visible mobile phone bill is $25 a month and includes unlimited calling, texting, data, and hotspot mobile.
From what I understand from others, alcohol in Wisconsin is much less expensive than elsewhere in the United States.
