- In this tutorial, you will see how to make a mushroom House using plastic bottles. You can also use this craft as succulent planter and indoor decoration. It's an awesome recycling craft project you can make at home! To make this succulent garden I use mainly paper clay (DAS Modelling Clay), cardboard, plastic bottles, wire string lights. 1. What clay do you use?
👉 I use a bought paper clay branded "DAS Modelling Material" - s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDTv99T
PS: You can find it cheaper in your local art shop.
2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDTv99T ) and the homemade paper clay ( ua-cam.com/video/_Ef-U6aZEoI/v-deo.html )?
👉 The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
👉 Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
👉 You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question

This is my absolute favourite piece of your work. It is so beautiful and painted so well. You are a true artiste. The fairy houses that you make are so very beautiful and skillfully put together, it's amazing to watch.
I use Das clay, like you do, but I am having issues. Can I ask you:- how do you keep the clay from cracking when you wrap it around solid objects? Also, how do you prevent the seams from cracking where you join clay onto clay,? I have tried making the clay wetter, that didn't work. So I tried working with it without adding any water at all, and that didn't work either! I am frustrated with it to be honest. I love working with Air Dry Clay because it's wonderful clay, but when it dries it cracks all over with splits all over the place! Please can you advise me on what to try? I am running out of ideas to be honest. Thank you in advance in case you help me.

Really I don't know why you find these problems. DAS modelling clay is the best.
Is it your clay drying too quickly, say in direct sunlight or a hot room? or it's too thick and the outside dries faster than the inside? cracks can emerge for both reasons, for me it was just a case of trial and error until I found what works :-) Also some people have said adding too much water can cause cracks too.

So cute! I made my first fairy house. I thought I had waterproofed it by spraying it with polyurethane but it didn’t work. What do you do to prevent moisture damage on pieces you place outside? Can you help me on this? I was devastated to have all that work ruined after I put so much work into it. 😢
