    Surprising that door pop open doors haven't broken off the hinges, they seem to fly open with a whack. Great recap.(Audio from your camera is better). Cool clock radio.

    Come for the know-how, stay for the cynicism. I think I've been watching these oldies for about a month now and have been into other channels on electronics revamps, mostly guitar amps, but mostly these people work on equipment that's worth hundreds, sometimes thousands of bucks... That told, I much more enjoy watching old $50-tops radios and TV's being revived with a part here and a tweak there on the bare minimum of expense, usually, but with all of the quality learning time spent to make me feel like even I could become Dr. Frankenstein someday too. *IT'S ALIVE!!*

    The long red wire is to hook the "wave magnet" antenna to and the suction cup thingy is to stick it to the window of a train to hang the antenna to. On long train rides, one could use the radio on battery and get better reception through the window free from the interference of the train body without having to put the actual radio next to the window for convenience..

    OMG. I was given one of those radios when I was a teenager. I remember connecting a bunch of 9 volt batteries in series, along with a bunch of D cells to make up the required battery pack. The set was missing the popup antenna, so I used an old loop antenna (the kind without the ferrite rod) salvaged from a dead AA5 set. It was a nice 'portable' radio, though 'luggable' would have been the more correct term. Very sensitive, a nice DX radio! And the sound was fantastic. The handle on mine was in better shape.
    The antenna should pop up when the doors open. It was spring loaded. I guess that radio was missing the springs. BTW, the tube complement is similar to the early TO's.

    I cannot for the life of me recall which youtube radio restorer it was, but I think it was in an atwater kent restoration. Anyway he blamed some failing transformers with small wire in tube gear on simply the method they used to wind them causing work hardening in the copper wire itself at pinch points which eventually with enough vibration would sheer and cause an open. During the video he actually unwound the transformer in question, which did not have burn marks, but rather broken pieces of wire, where it almost looked like the wire shrank and broke. Still it seemed well founded to me at the time.
    On another note, you were obviously dead on about the antenna needing to be out, as when you found the more original zenith it had a pop up antenna. It would have been funny to accidentally put something on the top of that radio, go to turn it on, and pop goes the weasel! (That mechanism had quite some force behind it! The novelty had to be telling your friends how to turn the radio on, and watching them jump back 3 feet while having a heart attack!

    • @shango066
      @shango066  7 років тому +4

      I have videos on here of IF transformers that look like the wire shrank and it looks like something ate the coils. There is something too that..

  • @justsumguy2u

    That had a happy ending for the customer, I'm sure he'll be pleased with the end result. I've replaced many an output transformer, and the failure mode is not always obvious---I've long suspected that maybe a momentary voltage spike took them out, possibly upon startup.

    Pull the clock rotor in that clock radio and heat it up (a 75-100 watt light bulb works well) and clean any oil that bubbles out from around gear shaft. While the rotor cools down, feed it some light oil around the gear shaft, continue the heat-cool cycle until it stops sucking in oil. I have an old 30s/40s Telechron wall clock out in the garage, it starts to slow down when the temperature falls below 10°F (that's when I usually unplug it until spring). It's a used and abused old clock, yet it keeps perfect time throughout the rest of the year.

    on those old clock motors with the little "tophat" part with the rotor and gear train, you can usually get them open and clean/reoil them and it will work for another 30 years. They seal it with a glue and it can be gently squeezed with pliers to break the glue and then it just opens up.

    We used to call those theater of the mind radio's. I recall one of our neighbors had one, the doors were like the curtain opening at the movie theater, and back then we had all those radio programs, Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, Superman, Suspicion, Dragnet, Ma Perkins, Abbot and Costello, Lum and Abner, and mom had all her soaps that she had playing when dad was in the field or out caring for the cows, working on farm equipment and that sort of thing.

    The caps will stay formed to whatever voltage is applied to them. There's no harm in overrating the voltage, sometimes it's even better, as the physically larger caps have a proportionately larger ripple current rating, which is good in places like the first filter cap after the rectifier and any switchmode supplies.

    Zenith post WWII sets are famous for deteriorated rubber wires. I had to do a complete rewire job on my 1946 console. Definitely worth it as it has wonderful tone and has both FM bands, the Armstrong 42.5-48.5Mhz and the "new" 88-108Mhz.

    I like this one, it reminds me of the trans oceanics. Very gimmicky! The accessories are for an external antenna. The wire plugs into the antenna plug where the cabinet antenna wire goes, and then the other side plugs into the antenna. The suction cups hold it onto a wall

    No matter how you look at it, this was a nice save. I've only ever seen one of these, and it, too, was not a 'prime specimen'. The handles seem to always take a hit, however, the 'barn doors' open without assistance on this radio, which the other would not do.

    Regarding voltage rating on caps. Blah, blah..in over 40 years blah blah..and all that preamble I have never had a sniff of an issue with overrated caps - many, many more at 20% ish safety margin pop regularly as we know - never had a return / complaint / failure from over rated component. I think this is a non issue. Love your vids though as usual ))

    I googled Zenith 6G801 and it came off the assembly line in 1948-49. I've heard that if an audio output transformer is open, you could bypass the open section with a resistor with the proper value to the center tap to solve the problem.

    17:30 One thing to make the doors pop open when you turn it on and to make closing the doors turn it off, but to make the doors the only way to turn it on and off is just silly. Nice collector's item, but it would have been a pain to live with that, though just unplugging it would probably make it bearable. It is amazing it's held up this long.

    All the tubes are locktals except the audio output which was octal, why was 3lf4 not used in Zenith radios? 3Q5 used instead. The Zenith Transoceanic used two 1LB4 in a push-pull over kill amplifier instead of a 3 volt tube requiring an additional one volt battery to the power supply. There must have been a boat load of 1LB4's made by Zenith!

    One maker--not sure I remember which; could be Sprague--rated their electrolytics at 0-whatever working voltage, indicating they will properly form regardless of how much the repair personnel may exercise overkill in the WV ratings department. When I was doing this work for a living I generally tried not to go much over 200%. Spot on to perhaps 50% over was the general rule.

  • @DavidRLocke
    @DavidRLocke 7 років тому

    Those Zeniths are pretty dense--lotta caps as compared to other brands of the same genre. The resulting performance of the set reflected this extra detail in the circuit design. So, unfortunately, did the price. Zenith sets cost an arm and a leg typically.
