The Mayfair Orchestra was a studio orchestra of the Gramophone Company that recorded beteween 1911 and 1920. They recorded a large variety of music that encompassed light orchestral, dance, ragtime and waltzes. The music was of a very high standard and they were directed by the best conductors and arrangers of the day.
Songe d'Automne (Dream of Autumn) was written by Archibald Joyce (1873-1963) in 1908. Joyce became known as the "english waltz king" for this piece and others and it has been said that Songe d'Autumn was the last music played on the Titanic. It was certainly amongst the repertoire of the White Star Line orchestra on that ill fated and tragic journey in April 1912.
Recorded from an original 78 in my personal collection.
This song shall be a remembrance to all the engineers passengers band and crew who all lost there lives in the icy and negative waters in the north Atlantic ocean on the RMS Titanic. May all their souls rest in peace
Me revoilà replongé dans le grésillement des glaçons .... qui en l' approche de l' hiver n' a pas oublié de me générer des frissons me conduisant jusqu' à la terreur d' un nouveau COVID.
NB: Ce qui là ... me conduit à la nostalgie ... "chanson d' automne" ... (déjà dans mon répertoire l' année dernière ...)
This waltz and Nearer my God to thee are the two musical pieces played by the band on Titanic before she sank. There is debate as to which was last but surely once the end was in sight the band would have switched to the hymn from this bittersweet dance.
Yes, there is enduring duscussion on this point, as i alluded to in the description. It is a lovely piece and somewhat fitting to the sadness of the event.
I think “Vision of Salome” falls into place near the last song played
It is another slow waltz by Archibald Joyce
Whenever I hear this recording I think of it over En Nacht Und Eis.
Thanks for the hint; I had never seen this film before but it is on UA-cam!
@@playedon78 yeah! Is was among the first made of the disaster! Unfortunately the very first movie, Saved from the Titanic, was lost in a fire. It starred a real Titanic survivor Dorothy Gibson!
Beautiful..thank you , Martin . I have many 78 rpm records but this one is unique .
Thank you for your kind comment. It seems many others agree with you as this has by far and away the highest number of views of all my uploads.
I don't think I've ever seen a single-sided version of a Mayfair Orchestra title - which I suppose really doesn't matter. A very pleasant disc. Thanks!

Thank you, thats interesting information I hadn't read before!
Listening to this is really depressing, it’s like the Titanic is mourning its own death, like a death cry of sorts.
Well I guess that depends on how you look at it. Prior to the tragic sinking you could think of it as a beautiful musical representation of a season of the year. after the sinking, it does seem a distant and bittersweet memory. In the few short years ahead, the world would be plunged into an even bigger tragedy that millions would fall victim to. I prefer to think of it as a joyful memory of another, perhaps more innocent time. Thank you for your comment.
