Man's ability to mete out cruel and barbaric punishment is of great concern. Even more so is the fact that often times it was religious institutions who, afraid of losing their power and control over people, assumed the place of God and meted out these ghastly punishments in the name of God, in order to keep the masses under their control, with their ungogly man made religion.
the blinding by basil was done specifically so that those blind men would become a burden on their country, having to take care of them and feed them.. as well as instill mass fear.

One thing that would be really helpful is to show the dates of your sources and explain when you are talking about the exceptions and not the rule. I understand that fantastic examples get more views, but the entire narrative of this channel seems to be painting the medieval European people as barbaric or worse evil when this is simply not the case. Many instances of torture from these videos fall well outside the medieval period and many come from outlandish exception cases not your typical everyday sort of thing. When you treat the outliers as normal it paints an inaccurate picture and the comments show that this is the understanding. Showing the sources and dates as you discuss these claims may help clarify this.
The channel is Medieval Madness, not Medieval Philanthropy. Why should he reference sources, this is not an academic research paper. Search "Tsar Samuel army blinding" and you will get the full story from many sources with dates, there's only so much one can say in a 12min video. Bottom line is, I couldn't care about the exact source and date because it ultimately did happen in the medieval period and if I want to find out more I can research it myself; and he does specify periods/years as at 2:18 , 3:28 , 3:53 and so on, perhaps you should watch the video next time.

The upbeat "cheers" at the end completes the topic.
Nailed it
That “cheers!” at the end always makes me happy 😃
3:05: As a Dane,I have to say:" We apologize for this barbary!" 😖😥😡
Why? The past has nothing to do with the current generations and government.
The children cannot be held responsible for the sins of their fathers. In the old Testament Yahweh stated that every man shall be responsible for his own sins which abrogated the law of the sins of the father's falling onto the children to the third and fourth generation. God makes the laws and they are His to change as he wills.
Imagine being a soldier and being ordered to assist in such barbarism ? I mean it, must take an extremely disturbed individual to carry out these mutilations.
yeah..can you imagine ths horror..100 blinded men..Jesus..
@@eriklarsen3345 Jesus is correct. They did this in his name. They really don't know Jesus. Can you even imagine Jesus coming down and saying, "This Is Not What I Meant!" Lol.
I had a finger nail removed years ago and will never forget the excruciating pain
The de-nailing bit made my toes curl. Ouch!
This channel is just the best ❤️💕 love it can't get enough madness 😍
Humans can be so brutal and it's upsetting. They still are although getting a little bit more civilization. Humans are mean and cruel.
Humans are not becoming more civilized. Things are getting worse
Love watching such content while having my breakfast…
Enjoy your breakfast and be careful holding knife and fork !
What savages we are, humans.
I don't want to hear anybody ever say they think people are basically good. humanity is truly depraved! look at the horrors we inflicted on our own kind
I had nothing to do with those.
Ah, the lovely creativity of mankind... I've learnt so much from this channel 🤓
This channel needs way more subs
Absolutely Fascinating Report....
I’m completely horrified! Thanks! 🤣
Love your content : )
I agree! I'm so glad that I found your channel!
i fully agree with you
Please get a Twitter! I wanna talk about how amazing ur channel is. I've already written 3-4 solid tracks on medieval torture.
"I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass.!' Fridays wouldn't be the same without your splendid work. Thank you MM keep em coming
🃏
I like the pulp fiction reference
@@ohionative5237 yeah man -
Mr wallace.... glad you got it 😁
As much as I cringe, your content is historically attractive…
Who were the people that carried out the punishments? You've gotta be a special kind of crazy to cut off facial features or body parts for a living
Just making lunch. Nothing better than a good video on maiming over a nice omelet... That sounds much worse than intended.
I love this channel.
I can't stop binging this channel
Clipping was another horrendous punishment for low level crimes. They would use some large shears to cut off the prisoners ears and nose
More crime and punishment videos! Honestly your video on animal trials changed my view of pigs forever . . .
How so?
The sheer number of accounts involving pigs eating people, way more than I would have thought
@@cinein5503 Pigs are omnivores like humans. If they're not well fed, they'll do what they must to survive. After all, far more humans eat pigs than vice versa...
Rosie the circus elephant deliberately killed her trainer. It was late 1800's and the public were outraged. It was decided that Rosie was guilty and could not be reformed. She was sentenced to death by electrocution, poor girl.Another elephant in the same time period was hung up on a crane!Wow🐘🐘🐘🐘
Animals deserve better. Animals are not livestock, they are living creatures. Humans maim them, humans torture them, humans kill them. Humans are not worthy. Animals on the other hand ARE the worthy ones.
Hello Lisa/James. Thank you for the time and energy you put into these most enlightening videos. The older paintings of this period acts as a barrier to make them appear as some breed of humans that are different from us, yet any one of them could come to today and function normally as perhaps we could go back. Has the human condition (mindset) and experiences changed that much in 500 years? We would still be struggling to get three-bars on our phones and scared of catching the Pox in 1550 ! 🧕
Ah, yes. Medieval torture methods. The perfect thing to watch while I’m eating lunch.
Caligula used to have criminals and those who had offended him castrated and tortured while he had breakfast.
Can you imagine being the guy who had to sit there and imagine all the horrible tortures. I mean was it like ”the king asked for another creative way to make a prisoner speak... again, do it.” or someone actually enjoyed inventing this and was like ”wow what a productive day I already came up with 15 new torture methods I hope at least one will be approved”.
One thing is ask for a scary punishment to make people afraid of you another be the mind who invents the method.
@7:00 they used this device on Esmeralda in the Hunchback of Notre Dame novel
when the movie is worse than the book
@@davidelabarile1634 it is Disney after all, they want to turn dark novels and stories into family films for some reason. Ariel was told by the sea witch after failing to woo the man that in order to spare herself the contract, she must kill him. She chooses not to in the end and dies (turns into sea foam).
Well, so much for the “good old days”.
At least the punishment would be a deterrent. Bet they didn't have repeat offenders the way we do now.
Idk what's worse the fact that they did, the fact that someone actually made blueprints for it, or the fact that someone had no problem carrying it out😂
How is it that de-nailing is probably one of the least long term debilitating things on that list and yet it's the one that causes the most wincing?
Would somebody’s nails grow back after that?
@@mgthestrange9098 As someone who's had nails removed multiple times in my life, I can say it would probably depend on how it's done. If using heated metal that cauterizes the wound like the video said some of them did, then no, they wouldn't grow back, as cauterizing can cause nails to stop growing. If it was just ripped off without causing any extra unnecessary damage to the nail bed or matrix, then they would likely grow back, just very slowly.
As a history nerd, I love your shit 👍
These videos always make me want to go back and hand out M-60's to all the peasants so they could fight against this kind of stuff
Time travel just for that will lead to much worse consequences. We leave the timeline as it is and learn from it.
They wouldn't have fought back. People have been trained that they are powerless to raise up to more powerful things.
They'd problaby just holocaust the jews. The widows, and the other Christians. Peasents are as shitty as the men who ruled them.
@@chris9650 they did fight back many many times. See the Jacqueries, the English 1381 peasants revolt, the Finnish Club wars, the german peasants war, etc etc.
These are only a few of hundreds of examples, and from Europe only.
These were our ancestors. These people bred and created us today. Savagery and evil is literally in our DNA, how crazy is that?
First! Love the channel.
More videos like this please. Are we bad people for wanting to watch videos like this? 😅😂😆
Very bad indeed, more videos please
I bought 'going to church in medieval England' and u showed the cover of the book at start of your video 😊
Now you could just lock someone in a room without a phone.
Hey were not all that bad. Some of us are so apathetic to it all that we can pass the time staring blankly at a wall
@@Aztesticals 50/50. half are apathetic, the other half are highly strung and hysterical. I keep my head down.

I live in Lancaster :) the judges lodgings is full of history and the castle and dungeon there ;)
Lets not forget many countries today still practice this cruelty.
The drug barons of South America are often reported as doing unspeakably cruel things to their rivals.
..so "clipping" coins was basically short changing a customer...if the punishment for getting caught doing this were to be re-introduced( Cutting the private parts off) a cashiers salary would skyrocket.
Hi MedievalMadness, your videos are so good, I have just come across them. Don't know if it would work but, could you do one on how common/prevalent the topics discussed in this video (and others) would likely to be have experienced by the common person back then. Are these the kind of things that in these days the average Joe would see on TV only and only the criminals and prosecutors experience or would the general public regularly get a flavour of what was to come if they stepped out of line? Sorry if you have covered this point already... Thank you :)
“Thieves were hard to catch” nowadays we got guys pulling up in pickup trucks to haul away an atm on camera
The Wolf of Wallstreet is gloating on podcasts, and the Enron architects do lecture circuits.
In 10 Years, Martin Skheli will be gloating on a San Diego beach on a mountain of dead and tormented diabetics.
Similar things went on during ww 2 and later wars in Yugoslavia, I saw people with bored through shin bones in India for repeated crimes punishment some 40 years ago.
It's amazing how little things have changed. Granted, you don't get killed for a "wrong" opinion, but you will get your life destroyed.. Especially if you are a person of any merit.
People have always been like this, from Witch hunts, Communist hunts etc.
People like to persecute each other then look back on how wrong and dumb it was then do it all over again.
People have never changed.
What a ridiculous comment, lol.
I don't understand this comment. How have things not changed dramatically in every conceivable way? Criminals get 3 hots and a cot... Nobody's getting their eyes plucked out...
I can't be the only one who feels the commenter is quietly hinting at race.
Rulers . Rulers had never changed. Wait till the zero zoning comes, carbon credits come & Megacity walls would come up.
Let’s see how many would be brave enough to hunt the masters deer.( I WISH that I was kidding).
Not gonna lie man found your channel like 3 days ago and been watching your stuff non stop
We also must remember that up until the relatively recent times most people couldn't even read or write
This was extremely hard to watch! 😬😬😬
I love this channel
What was the punishment for violating the espionage act?
We must remember there were no Lawyers or Legal Defense, especially for the defense
'Blind Them' ! I have to say that sounds like the Perfect punishment for those who prey on and hurt children. It's Highly unlikely that they'd Ever do it again.
5:09 a what in the door??
A few years ago I got hit on the tip of my pinky finger with a hockey puck that broke off my fingernail from the back. I definitely learned why pulling out fingernails is used as torture or punishment, one of the most painful things I've experienced for sure!
Can anyone tell me why all these monarchs had a scepter-type thing with a fleur-de-lis on top??
Probably intended effect, but when I heard
Short. Sharp. Shock. I heard the guitar of "us and them" playing in my head
Is it an expression in some part of England/UK?
Since - in the Middle Ages - most people could neither read or write, contracts were made by shaking hands. In medieval Germany, therefore, it was common to chop somebody's right hand off if they broke a contract - to show the world that this particular person was not trustworthy.
The narrator joyous voice fits well with the brutal treatment of criminals in the old days.
You're such a good story teller that your descriptions are making me cringe...
Theocracies are rough places to live. Let’s not have one here.
All approved by the church. ;)
Child Molesters rationalize their offenses as well. We still despise them.
Have you ever injured a fingernail? The pain is incredible! The soft tender flesh under the nails is one micrometer from the nerves themselves. To have nails torn out would be the same as dipping the fingertips in boiling fat.
People are sick.
Is "A short, sharp shock" part of the British lexicon in terms because when the narrator said it, I remembered it from Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon.
Why don't you make your own channel if you think you can do better?
@@daverowe4566 this comment is constructive criticism and it’s true. A lot of history channels on UA-cam have a problem with this exact thing
@@poopycarrot you should join forces with him and create the most accurate, well referenced history channel on UA-cam then, oh wait, it's easier to just crap on someone else's work isn't it?
@@daverowe4566 wasn't crapping on the work. Was trying to give constructive criticism. There is a difference. Crapping on the work would be to only say negative things. Constructive criticism involves explaining what is wrong with something and providing helpful and informative feedback to make it better. I did the latter.
