13 Low-Light Houseplants! | Plants That Love Low-Light
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2018
- Today I will be sharing 13 houseplants that do not mind low-light situations. I am by no means saying that low-light settings are IDEAL for each of these plants, because that is just not true. I am saying, however, that when I have placed these plants in low-light parts of my home, the light situation did not have too much a negative impact on them.
I will say, though, that less light does create some changes in several of these plants... such as slow growth & less blooms.
Thanks for watching!

recently found out theres a plant community on youtube... i love it
I realised this a couple weeks ago, so many great videos to watch and people (and plants) to discover!
Me too!
Wow there is? 😍 Where?
There is a community for everything on UA-cam
Do you have the list somewhere?
Thank you for this video 💚 love your channel so much 🌿🙌🏽
List of low light house plants:
1. Norfolk Island plant
2. Chinese evergreen
3. Peace lily
4. Zebra
5. Ivy
6. Zizi
7. Calathea
8. African violet
9. Parlour palm
10. Spider
11. Polka dot
12. Fittonia/ nerve
13. Bridal veil
14. Arrow plant
Thank you soooo much!!!!
You sure that number 9 is "Parley palm" ? Because I cannot find anything by that name.
FirstDagger parlour palm
+rockyraquel ; Thank you very much.
Arrow plant is missing from your list
I find a lot of the plants mentioned do not do so well for a very low-light. My peace lily, spider plants, and chinese evergreen suffered in a very low-lit area, and bounced back when I gave it medium light. The ZZ tolerates low light but does much better and grows faster in medium to bright.
I appreciate the fact that you are talking about normal plants everyone can afford and not what most plant nerds do... they love to show off plants that are either too expensive or impossible to get. Thank you!
At 1:30 you can see the white "flower" is beginning to turn green. Fyi this is an indicator that the peace lily is getting a little too much light.
The specifics of why and how are: the white spathe, sometimes called a "flower", is actually a specialized leaf. So, when it gets a little too much light the chloroplasts are activated more and show more which is what causes the green color in the spathe.
Tip for peace lily lighting: watch for the "flowers". If you're not seeing flowers, it could use a little more light in order to produce them. If they are turning green, then it has a little too much light. Hope this helps!
You should show people the actual placement in your home for each plant so people can see the amount of light you mean, because half of these plants I have in a south facing window because I'm in an apartment and the balcony above me blocks direct sunlight from hitting my plants so I have higher light plants up against the window and the lower light plants behind them. Everyone's amount of light is going to be different. P.S. you are naturally more beautiful than any super model!
Right! The Peace Lily, for example, does need filtered light to bloom like that. They are not easy to keep for me. I've tried SEVERAL times.
I can’t get the polka dot plant lighting right . I had it close, far ,dark
@@bgjblue Do you tend to overwater?
Sometimes, it's the zone you're in...?
This channel is for plants but not for some kind intertimen for her beautiful body
Thank you for Not using annoying music or having useless talking. Great informative video FINALLY! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😍
I agree 💯
i think you need to define low light. I work in a green house at a nursery and the customers i deal with often have very different understandings of what low light means. From the look of it your place has a ton of ambient light so you can grow pretty much anything there.
There are a lot of plants which are usually considered houseplants that can actually acclimate to full sun, any type of ficus or croton for example. I've even seen spathiphylums and hydrangeas in full sun but they aren't super happy.
I love your ZZ plant zamioculcas zamifolia, one of my favorites. would you believe i have acclimated them to live underwater in my fish tank twice? My colleagues are baffled lol but plants can adapt to a wide variety of conditions given enough transition time. i also love your calathea lancifolia and i want to tell you, that burn on the leaf was not from light They can take lots of light humidity and heat and almost full fun. that was a classic chemical burn from fertilizer or salt build up. Rinse the soil real good ay time you see that pattern, or even soak it for a while to leach out the chemical.
you can recognize chemical burn by the way it tarts at the tip or edge and progresses inward, the plant is trying to push the chemical out and is willing to sacrifice some leaf to do it. btw calathea is one of the few plants i have seen go straight from air, knock off the soil, and then be submerged in water and be just fine.
For really low light ZZ is a good one provided it gets nice and dry or has plenty or aggregate in the soil. It's the super rich peatey soil that rots out and the roots are next and then you gotta amputate if there's any hope.
Pachira can also take pretty low light but again they need to dry out good for the same reason
Dracena Craigii and all cultivars, dracena massangeana, craigii compacta
And especially aspidistra, the cast iron plant, very hard to kill it with sun shade drought or flood, but some people told me they managed to do it.
One last thing, about the bridal veil, i forget the species of that kind of tradescantia, but that is one of my favorite genuii or whatever is genus in plural form. They are bad ass, i have seen ome survive with not soil very littl light at the bottom of a pile of cuttings in a box for over a year and they are still alive. they looked terrible but the were alive. low light indeed but you gotta be careful on watering to much.
Great information- thanks! I was wondering about that kind of leaf burn on my own plants (pothos). I will try flushing it with water.
Keith, I'd follow your videos if you ever decided to make any just based on this one comment alone! Thanks for the insights!
Keith Siemens Excellent information.
My spider plants want light. I was thinking the same with the amount of light that was in her space. To me that isn’t low light. A great video though. I would watch your channel if you had one. Your info is excellent 🙌🏻
Thank you for this!! My spider plant and my African violet both prefer moderate to high light. 🤷♀️
Harli: “these ones need pretty much no light at all”
Me: *pauses video and quickly moves spider plant away from window in guilt*
Ha! I just saw this now and did the exact same thing with my spider plant! That's so funny! I paused the video, and moved my plant away from the direct Sun where I had it. 😊👍🌿💜
Me too 😊
With more light spider plant grows much better. It does not seed sunlight though. But with more light it will be bigger and fuller and will flower and give babies more quickly.
Ilona Pankevich mine actually put out 5 new babies after being moved
@@ilonaxxx20 Sadly, mine has grown well but has been leaning towards the light, but has never had 'babies '. I've had this 2 yrs now. I own 6 plants and kept them alive for a few yrs now, but as a plant Mum, I don't have much confidence at all. Constantly looking on UA-cam for more info. I wish I knew what else to do and how to work with the changing light in our home each day and each changing season. I'm planning to get more plants because I just love them indoors around me, but I have very little knowledge about the right light and placement of plants in our home. So much to learn ....🌿💜
We are in tropical country. These indoor plants are commonly found in our country.Luckily we can buy them at cheaper price. But some people did not appreciate the unique beauty of these plants. But for me i dont care if my house looks like a jungle because of plants. It is my hobby.😊
I would love to see *where* you keep them that'll make a great reference for where I could put the plants in my own home
The room your in is very bright, which most house plants will love, even low light.
Good old Sansaverias. We travel fulltime in our RV. Most plants barely last a couple seasons because the environment I can give them changes so much. Plus, they mostly have to live outside. But I have had a couple Sansaverias for years, in full Florida sun and in deep shaded Wisconsin woods, in the Sonoran desert and in Washington's constant sunless damp. They just keep soldiering thru.
when you add ashes it will flower the drops on the flower is sugar, you can eat that.
Dude, I own most of the plants you described in this video, and you explained why I'm having issues with some of them.
And I just got a huge Bridal Veil yesterday. So glad I found you!
I’ve just fallen in love with plants and cane across your videos. They’re really good. Lots of info and you’re very likeable. Thanks 😊
Thx Harli, wish I had found you before I bought several different plants that I over-watered and placed in wrong locations. You'll be going with me now when I walk around Lowes and HD. Didn't realize how much I would enjoy this hobby. Im 62 years young, semi-retired and enjoy the education you've provided-and TBH, your really easy on the eyes as well.Thx again.
Most of the plants with patterns need bright light to maintain their colors, otherwise their leaves may need to synthesize more chlorophyll to survive the low light situation, and their leave may revert to solid green.
Just depends on plant. My polka dot plant looses its bright colors and reverts to green when l put it in bright light but when l move it back to lower light the new leaves come back with bright colors again.
You must get pothos and snake plant. They do great in low light situations.
Just getting into houseplants, enjoying the channel.
Thanks for sharing when you have a flower garden its like someone who love shoes you are are always looking for more
Thanks for the info.
Much appreciate it. Nice plants by the way
Very nice video Harli. Thanks for sharing. It was very helpful.
Olga's dreamland thank you for watching!
You are interested this type of medicinal and air purified indoors plants decoration business ?
As per hobby.
I really enjoyed your video. Your personality is really natural and I loved that you featured a few new house plants I didn't realize were low light :) super helpful
that huge tea cup shaped pot is beautiful, watching your video for the first time
My peace lily, spider, and snake plant got sick in low light. They need bright indirect light !
how about useing grow light? is it can kill spider
It's not only the light. The 3 you mention can thrive in medium/low light situations as well, when the other conditions are also good (watering, temperature, air humidity).
My spider loves sitting infront of the window and is growing like mad. And didnt do well in the dark so I dont understand about this low light buisness.
Same, mine manages but doesn't flower in low light
My Norfolk pine needed more light as well. It loves high indirect light. It even flourished in afternoon sun 2 feet away from a west facing window. It was looking rough when it was getting no light in my north facing window.
Just bought a discounted Aglaonema/Chinese evergreen similar to yours (but switched colors around with red on the edges) discounted at Walmart. (Found out you can divide/propagate those too by cutting down, which is great since mine has like 5 stems in a small pot.) Yay for houseplants that stay alive for color during the winter! Helps with seasonal affective disorder!
PS LOVE the mug pot your zebra plant is in!
She is so knowledgeable! My late mother had an off the charts green thumb. Plants indoors and outdoors thrived in her care. This girl gives new meaning to the reason for not taking calls: "I'm doing my gardening, call you later."
Love your videos and your enthusiasm for plants.
I have a spider and snake plant, I do notice the snake plants does well in the dark, but the spider plant doesn't like low light.
Malexah Mor maybe we have different spider plant varieties? A lot of people agree that their spider plants like low light! Maybe it just depends on the climate as well?
Malexah Mor
I live in south Florida
The snake plant is also called mother n law tongue Because you can't kill it.
My spider plant likes the window.
I had a snake plant in low light. It was doing ok, but not developing. Once I put it into high light conditions, it started growing like crazy. So if you want it to develop, you need to give them light.
Malexah Mor yea same experience.
Hey mine too spider plant died ... but snake plants waoo I have it for almost two years
Thanks Harli. I didnt know that some of these plants were low light. I have more options than I thought for my bedroom! :) I love the pot/stand combo your African Violet is in.
Given To Grow yes! I definitely think there are more houseplants than anyone realizes that actually do relatively well in low light! Best of luck deciding which to put in your room 😊
Where did you get your african violet pot and stand? Thanks
You are incredible. Thank you...o am new to house plants...know nearly nothing...you enriched my knowledge multiple times In such a short time. I like your style where you go right to the point right away...no story telling...
Thanks for these great ideas! I live in a little house in a forest and am always looking for low-light plants. You mentioned several I have not heard of. Love your collection of planters, too!
If I had a house fire this plant makes the “grab on my way out items”
I have had this Hoya plant for almost 40 years. That 40 is not a typo. I have dated photos where I can see it in the background.
I have a plant that is special. It’s a very hardy plant and one that can be coaxed into growing around any shape ( like a cut coat-hanger arc or semicircle).
Best of all it is very easy to maintain.
However, you may want to include it
in your will.
"what was i talking about?" HA oh my god me too
Such an informative video! I love how concise and to the point you are👏 great work
"What was I talking about?".....Lol!!😄 Adorable.💗
pothos, silver bay, peace lily, oyster plant, Nevada pepperomia, orchids
Nice!
I’m obsessed with watching your videos! Seriously such a guilt pleasure for me. My boyfriend, by the way is the same way about my plants as your husband... tells me all the time I don’t need more.. and I’m pretty sure i have like 1/3 of what you do. He’s crazy!! Hahaha! But he does love how happy it makes me.
I love the pots your plants are in!✨
Your spider plant needs light. There is a reason why it is such a light sickly color. Mine lives hanging by a window and already has babies growing and is a rich dark pretty green.
RainbowRoseGaming this variety of spider plant is light green & white striped 😊 it is probably a different variety than the one you have
I have both varieties of spider plant, my dark green ones prefer bright indirect light near a window, and the white and green ones lose varigation in bright light. We keep it by the window, but it doesn't get much since it's hidden behind pots from other plants.
Spiderplants and polka dot plants are my nemesis
Jodie Kelly really?! I’m very shocked by that! My mom hates polka dot plants in her house too because they don’t do well for her!
Love the editing. It makes the video a pleasure to watch. Keeps it kinda 'snappy' & fun.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate it.
I live in England in a terraced house and I know about ‘low light’ my spider plants didn’t like it here and I had to take them back to work where I propagated them. The calathea has been doing really well in the upstairs room where there is diffused light. Any direct light and over watering seems to upset all of these plants. I have a Hoya which needs to be left alone, but hasn’t flowered yet! But my two peace lilys love the dark corners and diffused light as they consistently flower.
You’re making me want to spend all my money on plants 😭 (it would be helpful to list the plants in the description box)
Hope Mills
Right??? I am making a list of all the new ones I want to find now after watching her video! If you cannot find these plants locally, any suggestions on a decent place online to buy them?? I have never purchased plants online & am leery to do so w/o trusted recommendations... ?
I have a serious plant addiction. I spend virtually ALL of my 'folding money' on plants and plant related items. Clothing, shoes or a decent haircut rarely tempt me. Makeup? Oh, no...that's my plant money! Coffee or food to go? I could buy a small plant!
Most of these plants, you can get for free... Get cuttings or go shopping..
Now I know why my ivy died. I had it hanging in front of my kitchen eating nook window. Thanks!!
My ivy is certainly happie in a north facing window
Oh my goodness the perfect video for me! Putting this video in my favourites list for future reference. Will have to see which ones do well with higher temperatures too.
OMG! this was a great video, and your pots are so adorable especially the pig one and brown coffee one. thanks for this video!
Chamedorea metallica. Dwarf fishtail palm. Great looking unusual palm that is a great performer indoors with only artificial lighting.
My grandson is super allergic to the fish tail palm. Watch the numerous berries that fall off around children. I wouldn't have one around children. They are very pretty. Love your video! Thanks!
Which plant do you recommend if you live in a dungeon?
Morgynn H a dog 😜
Morgynn H A pair of handcuffs and a rubber mask 😈😈
Silk plant
Any plant will do as long as it's a plastic made😜
Ferns. You often find them in dark, damp places. Try a davallia or helxine.
Wonderful video and very informative . You have beautiful plants
Thanks for sharing
Love love your plants🌿☘🍀🌾🌱
New subscriber. Great channel.😋
ALSO, beautiful girls... Some bonsai (If you want to try that, cause its supercool and easy) do grow easy with lowlight conditions.. try Ficus, Succulents & Schefflera!
Thanks for all the suggestions. Just recently started getting into plants. Definitely want them all haha.
I love that all your pots are all different
Your place seems pretty well lit. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Sansevieria plant. Those are popular and can handle low light and low maintenance like the zz plant. Tfs, it was very helpful.
Yes! The front half of my house is pretty well lit, but the back half has hardly any windows! IT makes it difficult to keep plants there for sure.
Harli love your vids..dont change a thing
stephanie skye thank you so much! Your uplifting comment really means so much to me. Really thank
You.
Can we just stop for a sec to admire her collection of pots as well?
You have some of THEE cutest pots!!
Where do You buy your plants
2:07 can someone tell me where to find that tea cup planter?
Those can be found (similar) at nearly any store that has an indoor garden section. They are usually pretty expensive if sold as a standalone item, expect around $30 price range. They also tend to be very seasonal rather than stocked year round. Usually the time to get them is when they are being sold with a plant already in them because the nursery that the plants came from were able to get a wholesale price on the tea cup planters and usually the nurseries that supply the retail stores don't charge a mark-up for the pot but just their standard price for the plant plus their own wholesale cost on the pot. Usually there will also be a few potted tea cup plants that don't do so well.... and the store will then mark down the item even more so that's an excellent time to buy it even if it's just for tea cup pot since the plant might not be saveable at that point. Another option to consider is to make your own by going to a thrift store and picking up large mugs or soup mugs which can be nearly the size of the one in the video. It won't have a drain hole in the bottom but if you have a power drill at home or know anyone that does have one you can just drill a whole in the bottom for drainage and then set it on whatever saucer you'd like. Lastly, you can also purchase tea cup pots on Amazon, just type in tea cup planter in the search field.
@@racers115 thank you so much for your answer! Since I saw this video I’ve been obsessed with that pot. I have sone options on ebay but not this type exactly, I could always paint them I guess. But I will definitely hubt them on my near by plant shops.
You’re a staple in the plant community 💚
No annoying music awesome thank you so much🌺
My spider plant loves high light. I had to move it from my house to my job where he’s in full direct light & thriving.
Sandy Patrice it’s so weird how it tends to vary! My spider plant burned when it got direct light.
Sandy Patrice there are different varieties of spider plants. I have one in a east facing window and one in a West. They are both doing well.
Mine loves partly shade.
4:59 looks like a bug is crawling on him.😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Very nice collection of indoor plants. You are as beautiful as your plants.😀👍
I like the pots of your plants. They compliment the plants very well. I am looking forward to see your 300 plant collection.
Could you please do a video on indoor plants that are cat/pet friendly 😊 x
The majority of these plants are toxic to pets and humans. Lilies will put a cat into kidney failure not to mention can kill a child. I know she is on a diff topic but I wish plants were listed for toxicity to humans and pets.
Parlour palms are pet friendly!
I can not believe what is happening . I meant what I said as a constructive criticism not to be malice or malicious in any way what so ever. I actually real like her video I think she does know her stuff .... but like all of us, every day is learning day. Again I apologize. I guess what I should have expressed that every ones idea of low light medium light seem to vary. So that being said, I think that it would make me and other understand more clearly if you were to take us on a house tour to show us each room and the light perspective in each one and where the plants stay. Because you seem to always be in a really bright room when you do your video. simply because I we could get a better understanding. The reason for this is because I had some of those low light plants and the die on me. For some reason they just would not thrive for me. And again I apologize for grief I may have cause you. Now I will leaf you alone.... get it, leaf you alone. LOL
Yours Truley
Dawn
I agree with you.
Agree
your comment was really helpful and "enlightening".
Mvb
This was so helpful for me being a newbie at this. Thank you so much 🌿
I swear I’ll end up buying all the plants you have 😆👌🏾 love em all 🥰
No list in description?
no
no pothos in the mix?^^
I forgot so many great options. I think I need to refill this!
Thanks for sharing-there’s quite a few that can take low light & they’re very cool looking!
Janie Harvey there are actually a lot of cool-looking-low-light plants out there!
I’m totally binge watching all your videos! lol love love love
Interesting about your african violets. Mine do much better in higher light and all the research ive done says they like more light. My prayer plant likes low light.
That's what I had found in research as well, but I placed this one in a very dimly lit hallway & it has done well!
Marnie Griffith Research also say keep them moist but letting them dry completely then water works better for my environment.
i don’t have roooooommmm i’m gonna cry lol
Nooooo 😭
Great specific topic...... recently moved from beach in CA to SC, in a house where no windows get any direct sunlight.... muted light only, so this awesome to see.
Hey! I love your videos! I always come to you when I have a question and I can usually find the answer so fast! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I do have a question for you if you happen to see this comment, I have a studio apartment and the bedroom has absolutely no windows, so no light. Is there anything that could work in there, or should I get a low light plant and just bring it out into the very well lit living area for a few minutes (or hours?) during the day? Again, thank you for your videos and for also being fun to watch!
African Violets can grow in low light area but it will not look as beautiful. The leaves will strive up and spoil the symmetry of the plant.
Yes, thank you. Harlie did say that as well🌸
"short story long" 😆
missmatch mishmash 🙈👀🥴😉
Beautiful plants and most of all, beautiful lady.
I love all your pots!!
You are talking very quickly soooooo... Please write the name of each plant if you can not talk slowly
I can not hear the names of these plants 😢
You can cha he the play back speed, try it at .75!
Jake Smith
I disagree I have parkour palm, spider, polkadot, Fittonia, ivy, zzplant and arrowhead all on my south facing indoor porch surrounded by windows and the heat and sun are extreme out there and all the above mentioned plants are going insane and no burning or color loss.
Jake Smith I keep mine outdoors in very bright filtered light to dappled light as well and it looks like a tropical jungle in my garden...I have videos to prove it. LOL!
I love your coffee cup planter. 👏👏👏👏
It’s one of my favorites! 😊❤️
Excellent video! Thank you so much. The information you provided was exactly what I needed. From British Columbia Canada
I feel like most of this plants don't "love low light", they survive it.
Many of them have evolved to recieve only indirect sunlight due to bigger plants shadowing them. They became used to low light.
@@Beth___- yeah but there's a huge difference between outside in shade and in a dark corner of a room indoors
Not true. Some plants really do suffer in light.
You're giving me some Alicia Silverstone vibes in this video.
That coffee cup planter is adorable
Love your cute plant pots!!
Snake plants like low light.
rmcandlelight true! I can’t believe I forgot to include that one.
Snake plants are the best
Actually, Snake Plants like full sun if they can get it, but they will get by with low light- they are one of the most adaptable plants, as far as light exposure is concerned.
I think you need a little more research
Everything I mentioned is in MY experience. (:
pleleides I don't think she's had them for very long. Plants will have growth surges when under stress in order to try and survive.
I've had them for 6 months.
Harli G my point exactly. A lot of the varieties of plants we've chosen to keep indoors are among the most resilient plants there are. Try killing a pothos and see how long it takes. It would take a lot longer than six months. My point is your video is structured as a "teaching with authority from experience" type video. Maybe you should do more of a "learn with me as I learn" type style until you have gained some solid knowledge.
You could just not watch
Finally a good plant channel 😊
So much excellent advice! Thank you So much.
Well done, sister. Great narration of low light plants 💝
I love your plants especially the polka dot, I should get one. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I am looking for low light plants because my room gets almost no sunlight during the colder months. I also googled if they are toxic to animals because I have a cat so NON TOXIC plants for cats are:
1. zebra plant,
2. calathea plant,
3. african violet,
4. parlor palm,
5. spider plant,
6. fittonia / nerve plant.
NOT TOXIC but could be not the best for sensitive pets:
1. polka dot plant.
Thank you this was really helpful! A few of my plants need to be moved away from the window! I appreciate your sharing.
