For the BODY COUNT folks, an estimated 20,000 Persians were killed in the real battle. Considering only a thousand or so Greeks died, that's impressive.
mc finn ... is this sarcasm? If it is, I didn’t notice and I apologize for it. But I hate when people think they know history just because they watched movie. Yes, there was 300 Spartans but there was about a 1,000 soldiers from the allied Greek-states (Athens, Megara, Corinth), they lost two battles one in land and one naval (I could be wrong tho my memory fails me) thankfully they won the war, making it one of the most important wars in human history. Think about it, how would the modern world look like now if the Persians won?
An estimated half a million were held back over 3 days due to the placement of the battle not allowing room for persians to continue coming through. Not to mention, originally those 20,000 died in those 2 & 1/2 days and then another wave flanked them with the alternate path then killing the Spartans who remained. All in all, more impressive than pretty much any other display of war. The total number of Persians was insane, but thankfully after wasting time and resources in Sparta, the Athenian navy didn’t have too much trouble stopping the ships that came for war
Christian Holzschuh who knows, I didn’t mean anything bad or insulting with my statement, it’s just something to think about like how would the US look like today if they still belonged to England. Again, I didn’t mean anything rude by saying let’s think about how the modern would’ve looked like if the Persians won, how much the culture would’ve changed and the religion etc.
The "Immortals" were called as such because supposedly whenever a member of the exactly 10,000 man unit was killed, seriously wounded, or sick they would be immediately replaced with a new one, maintaining the corps as a cohesive entity with a constant strength.
_"Where would he have even spent those?"_ The coins would have been accepted anywhere in the Empire. Since he was obviously betting on Persia to win, that would have eventually included Sparta in his head.
As a side note, Spartan trash talking was known as "laconic humour" named after Laconia, an area in Ancient Greece. Women were particularly famous for it, such as when a soldier was telling his mother his sword was too short; she told him "take a step forward and it will be long enough". Also (this is something the movie actually got right), women had much more freedom in Sparta than in other areas of Greece (kinda pokes a hole in all that "toxic masculinity" stuff we keep hearing these days...), and one women from Sparta was asked how they were able to speak to their men in such ways; she replied: "Because only Spartan women give birth to MEN". And as for the whole "Immortals" thing; They were referred to as the Immortals in real life because they were said to be so numerous that when one died, another soldier was there to immediately take his place no matter how many died.
@Cas van der Wal Calm your tit d-bag. when you live in a time period where your life was swinging a sword around in mud for a few years then dying. then you can talk. also, that was fucking Athens that fucked twelve year old boys. get your history straight.

Congratulations on making it to 300. I've been following since you started and I'm happy to continue watching. Also it's always great to see you team up with Creepy. You two play off each other really well. See you in the next 300 unless youtube shuts your channel down. Be well and yourself.
I find it rather convenient that you reviewed this; just the other day I was thinking about a plot point I wanted to criticize. Ephialtes wanted to see battle, but most importantly, he wanted to die a Spartan Death; which is why Leonidas wishing him to "live forever," is the greatest insult he could give to the man... However...if all this man wants is to die a Spartan Death...why couldn't they have just let him? I understand that him being unable to lift a shield would weaken their phalanx...but who is to say he even needed to be a part of their phalanx to partake in the battle? Why not just simply have him stand in front of the Phalanx of Spartans, to greet the Persians head-on? Effectively making him - what you might call, the "Foreshot Fodder" as it were. That way, Ephialtes can fight in the battle, kill as many Persians as he realistically can, die a Spartan Death, and thus not betray Leonidas at the end... Win - Win - Win... -- Also, I find it hilarious that so many people say this is a homo-erotically charged movie, when it was written by Frank-BatmanisCrazy-Miller. Needless to say, anyone who has cross-examined the man alongside Linkara, would be pretty well aware of how he writes the sexual aspects of his comics to be.
In the comic Ephilates was crushed and immediatley threw himself off a cliff after Leonidas rejected him. Then after the Immortals battle he woke up realizing he didn't die and decided to go side with the Persians. They filmed that scene but then deleted it... Stupid choice. I think that was more important to the story than sex scenes with the queen or that whole council subplot that isn't even in the graphic novel.
Gay relationships were encouraged in Sparta, as it was thought that a group of soldiers would work together better if they had a sexual relationship. Another fun fact! Spartan boys were purposefully given just enough food that (while they didn’t starve to death) they would stay hungry to encourage the boys to steal food, a practice that they would be beaten for. The thought process was that the boys would learn how to move quickly and quietly by doing this
Kinda curious what would happen if Decker was introduced to Sabaton song about the real event that 300 is base on...20 caps says he would be head banging the whole time LIKE THE METAL HEAD HE IS

The 300 is based off what us Greeks believe mythology and history about the story especially us From Sparta. They didn’t kill that many enemy soldiers of the Persian army but they went on a suicide mission
The immortals were called the immortals not because they couldn’t be killed but because it seemed like when you killed one there was instantly another one to take the dead ones place.
I don’t understand why a lot of people don’t like the Snyder slow motion parts. I love all of them. I would like more of it. If you don’t like it don’t watch it and stfu.
To be fair, they do later state that his son would be starting his real training the next year, they didn't usually start soldier training until age 8, so I guess the son is supposed to be just 7 at the beginning of the movie.
They call the Athenians "boy lovers" how the hell are they gay? Oh by the way wounding Xerxes was to show he is not a god in front of his men and thus bringing forth his insecurity. This film was very good.
Word. They let you see all the details and it's quite impressive. The way the blood and cuts happen and how the bodies react to it to the hits, It give a ton of impact to the fights.
In my opinion leonidus actually defeated xerxes, because xerxes was said to be the unkillable God king... can't really say that after some "inferior" Spartan made him bleed now could they ?
This movie isn't a thinker, but it was never meant to be just a gory violent death montage. For that reason it reached every goal it was designed for. Outside of the excessive slow motion shots it was a well put together movie with an extreme amount of quotables. This movie deserved 4 out of 5 at least considering some of the lesser movies that got ranked higher I was surprised of how lowly he placed it.
To be fair the immortals where not called that because the units soldiers where unkillable, they where called that because everytime they showed up they where always a full unit of the exact same amount of soldiers regardless of how many battles they participated in. Sparta didn't use coins. But towards the end (which is what this whole film is about), some got used to the idea of "the new ways" and found it much simpler to just carry a few pieces of metal in a pouch rather than move around entire herds of cattle. It also allowed those who did other things, like politicians, to not have to spend the majority of their time on raising farms and focus on things like politics.
