It has always been very clear to me that this song is about Neil meeting his new wife, while feeling the blessing of his first wife's spirit on this new relationship. "Reflected light to another's sight, and the moon tells a lover's story. My borrowed face and my thirdhand grace, only reflect your glory". That line brings tears to my eyes every single time. Perhaps one of the most emotional lyrics Neil ever wrote.
I Adore what you guys are doing 🤗 Great song! Awesome Album 😇 Very emotional, reflecting Neil’s Pain. I believe he was making Peace with Who we really are, and how small/insignificant, YET, How many Wonders we can experience when we become RAW (Hearing this Album after his Death, for instance). 🙏
Thank you! And I agree, this is definitely the most personal the writing got up to this point, and reading Ghost Rider and listening to this album is a truly raw experience!
Glad to have you on! Have fun exploring- if you hit the "Playlists" tab on our homepage, you'll see all of our series grouped -Roundtables, the RyGuys" quizzes, Jeopardy, Rush Roots (our bios), "Stick It Out" (all 3 seasons so far), our album Deep Dive series and more! Enjoy and Rush on!! 🤙🏼
"Earthshine" and "How it is" needed to be the # 2 & # singles back when. To me, the final lines "You’re still out of reach Form a dream to rise to Earthshine" he's speaking of Jackie and Selena when he looks into the heavens above.
My interpretation of “my borrowed face and what others see”, is all through his long journey he had to have a front face with everyone he met along the way and not show what he was going through. That would have been even more painful to explain for him, at least that’s what I feel… excelent roundtable!
14:40 Geddy always says they have no outtakes etc, but I'd eat a walrus to hear Time & Motion as a ballad per their demo, the Roll The Bones arrangement that Lerxst said was "too silly," the Green Knight tapes, and the original Earthshine music....🙏🔥
I've always liked and respected Rush, but was never a real fan. It was just one of those bands that whenever it came on the radio I'd say "oh yeah, cool song, Rush is good!" But that was the extent of it. Just finished the Geddy Lee autobiography and it kinda lit the fire. Listened to the whole Hemispheres album and at this point I'm like "holy shit, these guys are facking phenoms!" And there is this massive library of music I haven't heard yet. Can anyone recommend three albums to listen to in order, so that I can have a good idea of what they are really about? I was gonna listen to Clockwork Angels next but not sure if I should check out some other ones first. Thanks!
Glad you're getting into them, and very happy you've found the channel! Keep us posted on what you've listened to and what resonates with you- the great thing about 40 years of music is you have a LOT to look forward to! We hope you check out more Roundtables, Deep Dives and our other series as you start getting into these!
A great song off an underrated album. And educational to boot. Definitely a favorite. Thanks for the video, guys.
Thank you for that, and our pleasure! Very glad you enjoyed it, we love unpacking these songs!
