I own a NightSky, and the one BIG thing you have to be aware of, you will need an external midi controller, it can hold 300 patches in 3 banks, BUT they have no librarian to keep track of this so you better think about it, also you can not access the next 8 patches from Strymond unless you can send controller, and PC messages, now you can create cool patches fast, but where do you store them? and how do you retrieve them? I reached out to Strymond and their words are you must buy an external control and figure out a patch librarian on your own, now that being said, I own a Morningstar MC8 and have begun to make and store my own patches, but at this price point you will have to invest in another controller to take advantage of this pedal...this is never mentioned in any review that I have seen yet, and its a BIG deal at this price point...Helix, Eventide H9 all have advanced editor/ librarian software to support their pedals, this does not...Rhett makes some nice points about this pedal, but like a lot of reviews, this is never mentioned

I use a Korg Wavestate midi'd to and from a Behringer Deepmind 12, also the connected MIDI out from my old Kawai K1R module which passes on the PC messages to the Nightsky. I set it up for MIDI Bank 0, since 128 memory patches is more than enough for my needs. Since the Wavestate only sends out PC from 1 - 64 from it's Set List, I can use the Behringer MIDI Bank that I'm working on, to select PC from 65 - 128 on the Kawai and the Nightsky. Moving patches on the Nightsky (to overwrite bad ones with better ones) can be tricky, since I have to send a MIDI PC message to the Nightsky from the Behringer. Since I can only send a PC message by selecting the next or previous patch on the Behringer, I use a MIDI filter pedal I've had for over 20 years, to temporarily shut off the PC button, move the Behringer to just before the patch # on the Nightsky I want to override, turn the Filter pedal MIDI back on, press + for the next patch, and the good Nightsky patch overrides the bad one. Strymon also has a Multiswitch add-on pedal, which apparently can be set to select all Midi banks 0, 1, and 2, wich, fortunately, I don't need. I believe it is intended for Guitarists who don't have or want to be othered with MIDI Controllers.

Not sure how everyone else feels about it, but when it comes to “reverb” pedals, I want it to achieve some crazy spacey, other worldly sounds. The more “out there” the better. And the experimentation with different sounds helps write parts that I eventually turn into a song. It’s really fun to write a song around a specific sound I found. This pedal is going to a lot of us experimenting like crazy. :)

I really dig this review, Rhett! I can’t tell you how helpful your reviews on gear have been for me. I’m very appreciative. And man, I loved seeing the pedal being used with the Moog Sub 37 to give a quick perspective on what it’s like if you pair with a synth. I also have a Sub 37 and a Minimoog Voyager that I can’t wait to pair this pedal with! I get mine in the next couple days.

    Hi Rhett,
Came here from Rabea's video on the Nightsky because he mentioned being inspired by this one.
I saw the Nightsky's initial promotional videos from Strymon and, having always wanted a Strymon pedal and (loving reverb as I do), I ordered this the week it landed.
I haven't had a lot of time to dig in and devote to it, but it satisfies my itch for expansive, immersive reverb sounds, and I am happy to have a long learning curve ahead of me for the other sounds I'll be able to tap into as I play with it more.
Rabea is right, this is a great video - thank you for your honest, straightforward take on gear. I'll be subscribing and watching more.
    Cheers.

I've gotten so used to my Keeley "Dark Side" pedal that I haven't had much need for extra reverb/delay. This pedal seems ideal for a looping artist that's for sure. The Strymon is nice nonetheless if you can utilize everything on it and have the extra $$

Great review Rhett, and you nailed my initial reaction to this pedal. I thought it sounded spectacular on the Sub37, and now I’ve been wanting to try my H9 and Collider with mine to see if can get similar territory. You are spot on about the big build up on the track - it’s an effect that seems can get out of control if overused.

  • @absea7918
    @absea7918 3 роки тому +4

Great reaction. You articulated well about what this pedal is. I fall into that "basic guitar player" mold, and definitely am a fan of Strymon pedals, and use the Flint and Deco (which does just about anything). I think some players get caught up in the desire for a new toy, and focus more on the amount of possible options. For me, I try to pair back, so less of my thought is on the equipment, and more on what I'm playing.

Well for me, I would have lost interest in playing guitar a long time ago, if it wasnt for the endless options of creating so many soundsscapes that dont sound like guitar but I can play with guitar.
For me crafting sound is also a gift to be mastered and I enjoy it a lot, eapecially making patches on the fly while recording songs.
I pretty mich never use presets eith my 7 strymons, I always dial in the sounds very fast and always end up with something new that inspires me to play guitar differently. I never lose the focus on playing, it even encourages me to play ehen it soumds so awesome.

Works great for guitar. Goes above and beyond. It's all in there and is good for more than just one part of a song. It will do normal reverb and it does it well, it also does pretty nice things for those special moments. Most important for me is it has knobs no menus to scroll through. 128 presets that can be recalled through MIDI. I received mine a few days ago and already have it in my rig along with the Volante, they sound great together. Strymon's thinking on this pedal was out of the box.

I think your views on this pedal are spot on. I like the night sky, but I have to look at practicality for me. Well done, as I found this link over at TGP. I, too, play a Gretsch Black Falcon, and almost pulled the trigger on the NightSky. I play ambient, P&W and pedal steel guitar ala Daniel Lanois. Lots of cool sounds lurking inside, but as a gigging musician, I'm not sure I can justify adding this pedal to my gigging boards. Just a gut feeling .. once someone records a song with the NightSky and the song takes off, it will become the pedal of the month.

Great vid. I completely agree. I’m glad that companies are doing this kind of specialized stuff, but I can’t help being on the fence about this one. The NightSky (and others like Zoia etc) seem almost like the apex of this pedal craze we’ve all been in for years where now it almost seems companies are making products for gearpage users and ambient UA-cam guitarists more than typical working musicians. I’m not knocking it..I love both of those things, and obviously these are the people who buy them. My El Cap/Flint combo will never leave my board, but I even feel like I see more Timelines and Big Sky’s on Instagram than out in the real world. Either way it’s a crazy time to be a guitarist!

I also agree that in this case the pedal isn't better or worse than other pedals. It's just different... and unique. I like not only that Strymon makes different pedals that can be used for different instruments, but also how it can make pedals for the same instrument that do different things. I love these type pedals force us artists to think more creatively and more outside the box.

For me its something I use everyday with a fairly large (DAWless)) synth setup and the Tascam model 24 The Strymon nightsky on an fx send is phenominal. and even more so when sending cv (controlled voltage) from a sequencer to the exp pedal input. the nightsky lets you assign any setting to the open and closed pedal positions so the range of sequenced modulation you can apply to your reverb can be subtle to quite dramatic. Having all your massive reverbs (and other effects pedals with exp ins) modulating in sync with your tempo can be very effective.

Seems like it would be a great addition in a worship bands setting. Btw...loved that intro🔥🎸

Awesome intro! As for the pedal, I feel like I’d noodle around for a couple of hours, and then I’d get bored and wouldn’t use it much anymore.

Great video, I'm using it on a record and its situationally awesome. Would probably never throw it on a board for live gigs though (remember shows? lol)

Man, the track you did for this (and some of your other more "experimental/ambient" video tracks, for that matter) are some of my favorite things I've heard from you. I know you are more of an Amerciana/blues rock type of guy, but I'd love to hear more of these type of atmospheric songs from you. In your "I've Been Close minded" video, you talk about hearing new things and branching out. I think this proves you have it in you and could come up with some really cool stuff, ala Pink Floyd meets This Will Destroy You.
I'm a fan of Americana/Classic Rock/Blues Rock too, but sometimes that can feel really stale and been there done that. Listen to your internal voice and branch out! Use bands like The Constantines or Restorations as bridges to new styles.
    Cheers!

Intro is awesome!! But it would definitely be hard to incorporate it into most sets unless you were writing music using it or consistently playing super ambient stuff. Still cool sounding.

This pedal will be BIG with the experimental music community. It will be used with many instruments, not just guitar. Electronic producers will love it. Same as soundtrack composers. Personally I'm excited.
