    Born, raised, lived and worked on the OAK airport. Had my bicycle as a kid at the airport and rode up and down the ramp and into Hangar 6 (WOA HQ building)...DC-4's, Dc-7's, Electra, 707's, DC-8's, 727's were all around. Had lots of fun on North Field. Ed Daly (owner of World Airways) was a friend of my Dad's and I remember him having breakfast at my house as my mom kept dishing him out pancakes one morning.

      I can relate to your story. I started working at World in 1975. They had just moved from Hangar 6 to hangar 110. I was 17 when I started, Lied about my age. LOL, started Dec 18th at 7:18 in the morning as an R&E mechanic trainee. I worked there from 75-87 when they closed down the maintenance and laid all union personal off and then moved the company out of state. I worked at Tower Aviation on the north field for a couple years and then went to work at Alaska Airlines back in Hangar 6 for the next 15 years. 27 years total on the airport. So I understand growing up on the Oakland Airport. I've seen allot of changes at that airport of the years. It's like a second home to me.

      I was in the Air Force in the seventies and flew World Airways on their WESTPAC route from Clark AB, Philippines to Japan many times on 727's. Usually as a courier where you got to sit in the cargo area [it was a combi] and got really great service! Got to see Ed Daley heading to the BX on Clark. He was coordinating Operation Babylift out of Vietnam then until the AF took over and their C5 crashed flying out of Saigon. Really embarrassing. But great memories. Mostly.

    I traveled a lot aboard World Airways DC-6C's: specifically N90783 first then N11565 second. LOVED being on board. The route was from OAK to HNL (Oakland to Honolulu; and HNL to KWA (Honolulu to Kwajalein, the Western Electric charter). Did this from 1965 thru to 1967.

    Every time I hear or see Mr. Lowell Thomas, I remember the famous and fabulous Cinerama wide screen movie system. Mr. Thomas was a promoter of this system which placed you in the picture.

    World's bread and butter wasn't really the civilian charters featured on this video. The vast majority of their flights in the 60's were Military Airlift Command (MAC)charters flying troops and cargo to and from South Vietnam,and elsewhere in the Orient.

      They flew the navy's blue/gold crews from Charleston AFB to Holy Loch Scotland on rotation in the 60s. One time a fully loaded flight almost didn't make it over the trees at the south end. Tree tops swayed from the exhausts.

      I was a stewardess for World Airways in 1966. It was a fabulous job. We would have long layovers in cities all over the world, stayed in top hotels. We lived like trust fund girls who just happened to serve drinks on airplanes. But I opposed the Viet Nam war and didn't know when I applied that transporting troops was part of the business. Those flights were a sad experience. The young men were very subdued and you could sense their trepidation. One time on a flight home from Saigon our passengers were all in caskets piled triple high. We slept on the floor next to them.

    I flew on World to London in 1973 . We were on an American Express tour thru Europe. The DC-8 couldn't go all the way without fuel , we had to stop at BGR for gas. It was OAK-LAX-BGR-LGW. On the return it was AMS-OAK in a B747 . Not a lot of 747's then , I remember thinking ...COOL !

    I worked for World when they started flying out of EWR to OAK, LAX, & BAL (hi Inga...lol). We had 350 pax DC -10's only. They were grounded for about 6 months after an engine fell off of one in CHI & killed everyone on board, tragically. When we started back, our flights had more crew than passengers - maybe 15 people on flights to the west coast. Then the fare was dropped to $69.99 one way. Another $69.99 got you to HNL. We got mobbed!! Everday, every flight was over-booked. Celebrities, regular people - everybody wanted to go. Back then, '78-'79, you could walk up at the last minute & buy a one-way ticket with cash & no ID. Imagine that! By the way - this music sucks.

      Flew HNL-LAX on a World DC-10 back then. I didn't nab that fare, more like $99 each way. Still a good deal.

    I lived in Denver when "Ports of Call" was a huge deal. It was a charter company with a fleet of aircraft. There was a membership all my neighbors held, I think employees of certain large employers were given the memberships as a perk. Some of these folks had been in Thailand, Korea, Japan, Egypt, all over The Caribbean and Europe and these were people making less than I was. They traveled and I just went on short trips around the US thinking world travel was out of the question. Canada and the U.K. are packed with charter only companies. I wish we had them. You can't beat their packages, just check out the. Thomas Cook website converting.pounds to dollars

      Unlike TWA, World didn't have fixed routes. Not until the 1980's at least. For a little while after deregulation they had scheduled routes across the United States. But went back to charters when they couldn't compete.

    • @chrism1102
      @chrism1102 7 років тому +1

      I had a friend who worked for World at BWI Airport. The scheduled services were prone to frequent cancellations. I remember him saying that they just didn't have the "where with all" to enter scheduled passenger service. A quick look on Wiki and now I see why. They only had 9 aircraft! I would imagine that doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for cancellations. I think this really tarnished their image.
