      I ended up using my reciprocating saw and cutting the gutter right off the spike. These stupid spikes are the most frustrating thing I’ve ever seen. Even with the gutter gone and a claw hammer the damn spike won’t come out of the wood.

    I have a problem with this. What holds the back up? The two screws that are shown being driven do not go through the back of the gutter to hold the back up. At best it looks like maybe the gutter is pushed up against the screw and the sleeve is barely catching tin

    Uf trhe wood is rotted where original nail was can you just pick another spot where there is good wood to screw in the gutter spike? I live in an older house that doesn't even have flashing from what I can see, so over time the wood has rotted.

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly you’ve got bigger problems that need addressing in that case. The fascia board needs replacement. The only reason to use these screws IMHO is to reuse the existing gutter when everything but the nails are still in good shape. They’re not the best option vs hidden hangers for a new installation, and if you’re making new holes rather than reusing old ones. That said: you could send the screw in at an angle to find solid wood in a pinch, reusing the old hole on the face of the gutter.

    And this is why I like youtube. Exactly the video I needed. One question...did you replace with screws because that was closest to what you had? I used the hidden mount brackets with the screw insert and found that they were a lot more sturdy. But I guess since you already had the nail holes through the fronts of the gutters it was just as easy to use the screws and ferrules. Nice video. I hate gutter work but I am too cheap to pay a professional.

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  3 роки тому +2

      If I used the hidden hangers there’d be visible holes left in the gutter. The screws are also much cheaper.

  • @whenifeellow
    @whenifeellow 7 років тому +2

    Good video. I have a question: It looks like you kept the entire length of the gutter under the flashing. Are you able to have a slope in the gutter run, while keeping it tucked under the flashing?

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  7 років тому +3

      I kept all the original hole locations. Remember this was a repair, not a new install, using all the original gutters. Water doesn’t pool, so I suppose at the very least doesn’t have a negative slope.

    Are the gutter screws as good as hidden hangers? My Homedepot has the screws on back order,but they have the hidden hangers in stock.

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  4 роки тому +2

      It's important to note that the sole purpose of the gutter screw is to replace a gutter nail that is failing. They work well, and are a lot cheaper than hangers, but between the two on a new installation hangers are a better idea I think.

      @@youngbloodbuilt I have spikes,and the damn things are almost all loose,which was why I was looking at gutter screws. Can hangers be as easily installed as gutter screws to replace existing spikes?

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  4 роки тому +1

      @@mikedunn7795 screws are better in your situation I think, because they fill the holes. Hangers are going to be more expensive, leave an ugly hole, and may not install as easily depending on the condition of your fascia board because they use a much smaller and shorter screw for mounting. I'd just order the screws and wait to do the job.

But the idea is the nails pull out after wallowing out the holes they were in and putting them back in is no longer possible. So the screw threads are larger in diameter than the original nails and grab the existing holes. Allows you to reuse the original gutters.

    If you need to remove nails to repair the sofit, youll have to cut the nails at the base. Im a handyman and 90% of the nails cannot be taken out without major damage to the gutter.

    • @youngbloodbuilt
      @youngbloodbuilt  6 років тому +1

      Karri Kahl So your situation is completely different than the issue I was addressing. Good info. In my case the soffit was not in need of replacement, the gutters were falling off my house due to the natural expansion and contraction of the nails wallowing out the nail holes. As I show, most nails pulled out by hand. I did the entire house and avoided crushing the gutter by carefully using a spacer to pry against.

    • @karrikahl1940
      @karrikahl1940 6 років тому

      @@youngbloodbuilt contradicting yourself. You started recording after you pulled the nails out 4in? Before you replied to me and said they just slipped out cuz the board was bad. I was just very curious because I've never been able to pull a nail out without denting the aluminum gutter... Very soft metal. I just saw is very convenient that when you pull the nail out it was already out?!? If the gutter fails then the soffit is going to fail.

    The screws are as long as the nail. The screws won’t grab when you screw them in. They are fine for new construction. The nail was in the end of the rafter so theres a huge hole in the rafter already from the nail. The screws need to be alittle longer.

    • @youngbloodbuilt
