There has to be truth in it. He probably wrote it to publish it once Justinian died, but Justinian probably outlived Procopius (He outlived everyone). It's very often the most celebrated leaders(political, community, etc) that were in actuality the most despicable, immoral, and/or corrupt. Was it Justinian that traded the simple, ancient diadem for a full on jeweled crown 👑? What's that all about? Every emperor from Constantine to Justin I is never depicted with such a crown, and many after Justinian aren't depicted with it either, but it eventually became normal. The Byzantines emperors really needed a lesson in austerity.
I mean, Roman Emperors were becoming increasingly more and more gaudy after the reign of Diocleteian due him making the title of emperor a proto-divine right ruler.
Procopius also saw that Justinian x Amalasuintha crackship :D Love the sassanid's font, sends home the demon empire feel... (I hope you'll get to Khosrow eventually)
The more I look at the Justinian mosaics the more I feel sorry for him and them. LOOK at his face and all the faces for that matter. Firstly they are masterfully created the coloring and craftsmanship is obvious. THAT is real art not the moderns, post-Warhol anyways art is dead stuff foisted on us now. BUT the eyes look worried and they all have five a-clock shadow and seem weathered and maybe a little soft. The exact opposite of classical Rome representatives with strong heroic looking god like creations. Trippy but more modern looking as well.
I think it's funny you had to provide an expert to say the author would have faced serious consequences had this been seen by the wrong eyes. The dude is literally calling the emperor of all Romans a demon. Of course he would have been punished. No expert needed
Emperors had to put up with a lot of crap, actually. Whenever they walked around town, they might have to deal with jeering and name calling. But, yeah, when a prominent author writes about the emperor is a demon, and his wife is a mega whore and whatnot, he has probably taken his life into his hands
I won’t say who’s right or wrong but I will say it’s literally crazy to believe the leading person that tracked Justinian’s history in a good way and that’s trusted and nobody questions that.. However this book is supposed to just be considered “undoubted bs”?? It’s no reason a man whose literal life’s job was tracking Justina’s life just choose to spin into an attack on him unprovoked and just taken as “clearly fictitious”..
brilliant work!!! this deserves millions of views
I believe Procopius
Aka the true history of the court of Justinian
mfw I find out Justinian was a lizard person 🤭🤭🤭🤭
@@Aurelian369_ hey man there still running the world today
It's beyond comprehension
Ah the Procopius, the original version of "unbiased history of Rome"
A great time when Byztory uploads
I would like to point out that 3:40 was the first time I noticed Justinians little stache. How have I never noticed this before!
Justinian's wife also introduced Roman culture to the concept of the torture dungeon
She got tired from the sex dungeons of her youth so she decided to raise it up a notch :)
procopius’s account of Theodora is hilarious
He said, that she was disappointed by the amount of holes woman body have in order to satisfy men. He said, that she was disgusting whore basically.
brilliantly put together, good work
Thanks!

You don't get to the top by being a good guy.
Very true
you can but you will be killed
Theodoric

I'll take his word for it
I imagine the gentry of France in 1790ish had similar things to say about anyone in charge who was not part of the nobility.
And if it were a robespierre in question, they would be quite right.
It’s close to Halloween
God I love Byztory
Congratulations! I envisioned this episode.

Why do you assume the accounts of Justinian being a shape-shifter are false? How do you know?
‘Clearly fictitious’? Biased much? Your presumption isn’t smart.
Procopius, the Alex Jones of the late antiquity...
And they say that modern politicians receive to much slander........
Great video though, as always!
Thanks!
Great video!!
Where can I see the actual work of Procopius?
Right in time for spooky season!

Oh man. Early zealots.
Wow
I actually managed to read the whole book, it was 10% funny and 90% just complete garbage, obvious lies.
How so? The same guy historians view as the ultimate contemporary historian for Justinian and Theodora also wrong their most damning condemnation.
How dare Proco ruin our larp :( Justin is a good boi :)
I'll take your word for it since you were probably there...🙄
@@gts013 its enough to just educate yourself on this period of history, also i know the propaganda, when i see one.
