Actually it was the beta male admins that decided they wanted to attempt (obviously fail) to change 173’s design as they thought they were stealing credit when the artist genuinely didn’t mind at all and supported it.

With the Izumi Kato thing, he's actually fine with the use of the image, as long as it isn't being profited from, at least from what I know. The SCP site however, has stepped up their procedure on copyright. I think I read that he didn't want it removed.
Edit: Just checked it out, according to rock, paper, shotgun, he permitted it, but wasn't happy about it. And it's nice of the wiki to respect his feelings. 173 is an icon to the SCP community, but it's his baby. I guess it's like finding a lost dog with no collar or chip, and keeping in and falling in love with it. But then the original owner sees them and wants them back, with proof. So long, 173 original image. You may be gone from your document, but you will live on in our memories and hearts.

Yeah, I think the wiki decided because people would bad faith use 173's og design they should either just remove it or redesign it to stop the hastle

Major part was his artwork was being sololy being linked as 173 now and og purpose lost. So wiki staff got together decided it was best to remove the image freeing the artist as well.
173 author agreed but didn't want a new image so it now blank
