    If you look at a ‘71 (owned 12yrs)and then a ‘72 you can see where VW went cheap. Having said this I want a ‘72 as it has one really good improvement-the pancake engine! The bottom end is very robust/strong. More power at later 2000cc and dual carbs. I had a 1776cc dual carbs and 9qt oil system with external oil cooler with electric thermal fan. My ‘71 cruised 80mph all day! I had a small advertising agency and one client built only pancake engines for 914 racing cars. He explained why his engines were better suited for the bus than the overheating type1.

    Really great video! I need to do something similar for my 72 Bus. I'm just curious, you removed the three bolts on either side to lower the engine onto a jack so that the firewall clears the engine tin. Did you not have to remove any bolts on the bell housing? Or just those six bolts?

      Thanks! Yes, I dropped the mustache bar by unbolting the three bolts on each side and supported the engine on jackstands. I also disconnected the shift linkage and dropped the front of the trans by loosing the front trans mount, and that helped drop the engine/trans down enough to pull the firewall. The front engine tin fought me a little but I got past it with some kind words :)
