Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

- On a recent Autumn trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway, we got a glimpse into the workings of the Mabry Mill. There were Rangers telling stories and grinding corn as well as Blacksmith and weaving demonstrations. Over twenty million visitors a year head up and down the parkway and Mabry Mill is a favorite destination. This video features beautiful photographs taken by Janet.
From HappyMappy.com Perhaps the most photographed site on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mabry Mill was a community gathering place in the early decades of the 1900s and is a gathering place for Parkway visitors today. A restored gristmill, sawmill, wood working shop, and blacksmith shop. Traditional rural skills such as basket weaving, chair caneing, spinning and weaving are demonstrated on a regular basis during the visitor season. Apple butter on weekends in October and music and dancing each Sunday afternoon during the summer and fall make Mabry Mill one of many delightful Parkway experiences. Located at Milepost 176 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Been there several times, and will continue going back when we can! It is an Awesome place and I think that all children need to go and see how things were done back then😁😁😁.
Thank You so very much for the great message E!
You really live the Little less conversation and a little more action Mantra!
Dan
nice video,im just off the parkway in carroll co. Va....thanks for the ride,my grandpa told me about 30 yrs. ago, that if some1 was sentenced to hard labor in prison, they beat boulders into rocks building this great 45mph road to really see some of God's beautiful work..may God bless you & yours...
thankyou so much for this video,it is my all time favorite.i,ve been to mabry mill twice now,i was there just last month.the mountain is like home to me.
Lovely! Life was so simple and beautifdul back then! It can still be beautiful, but it is not simple! 5 *
A few years back we went to Lost River Cave in Kentucky. The guide we had was awesome. Very funny and well versed. A good guide can make the difference between just another site seeing trip and a great trip into the past.
Very nice video. My Mom and Dad worked at Mabry Mill; my Mom in the restaurant and my Dad in the Mill. I enjoy going by there , because I know I'll be home in 20 minutes!
Thank You so much tjbigdog,
your comment is one of our absolute favorites. We love having and making memories with family and it sounds like you have quite a few great ones yourself. We'll leave this video up as long as UA-cam lets us, hopefully forever, so you can go back to Mabry Mill anytime you wish. We just came from seeing the Frescos over in W. Jefferson. Is that still in the Yadkin?
Thank You so much TorsoFok,
We hope you get to come over someday, Traveling is great here in the south of the USA
Wow Thanks ddocda!
We both laughed out loud on the building your own mill.

Dan, that was great! Your videos are always well produced, being both entertaining and informative. Coming from England, it was because of videos like yours that I joined UA-cam in the first place, keep up the good work:)

Hey Dan I'm really glad that I ran across your videos. They are excellent in every aspect. You took me right back to when I was a kid in the late 60's traveling with my Mom & Pop. We always took the Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Parkway when vacationing to see family in Yadkin Valley NC. Some of my fondest memories are of Mabry Mill. We have pics of our family (there were 7 kids) playing around the mill stream and pond. Thank you for posting.
This ones for CL Doc Johnson Sr. R.I.P.
Miss ya Pop.
Thank You so much kalacaw!
It is a really cool place, and they have awesome Pork Chop sandwiches in the diner attached to the gift shop! ha ha
Dan I was just thinking -- you should make a DVD of all your movies and sell it. Your getting better every movie.
Great video. I didn't know about the Turn bags. First time I had ever heard that. The ranger did a real good job too.
Thanks MR,
Your kind words are always appreciated!
Dan
Real nice video, bringing back lots of old memories. I spent all my summers growing up in Meadows of Dan, and my sister used to be a waitress in the Restaurant serving those great tasting pancakes. Once I was even "given" a bath in the sluice guiding the water to the Mill, maybe thats why I like hot showers so much.
Really nice story, Dan. Nicely shot and put together. Gives a really good sense of the place. If I didn't live so far away, I'd like to go check it out! Time for a road trip...
Awesome Idea AofD
Maybe DanTraveling Season One!

I come from a offspring of this family. My grandpa Mabry died a couple months back.
Looking for a copy of the last song on the video - What Else by Sullivan Sisters? You tube link still works but it’s not there. Web link doesn’t work anymore. Great video of Mabry - cudos
you're very welcome, there has been a joke about the parkway around here as long as i know of...,did you know the parkway was disappearing,(cause when people go up there, they get a piece)lol...have a blessed day...
samuel balsley elizabeth,s husband was a blacksmith on the mountain.he probably worked at the mabry mill.
i have a special attachment to the mountain,my family history is on the mountain.they have records of every family that lived up on the mountain as we call it.if you need help researching your families i will be glad to help.the docents have the records and will copy them if the records aren,t too lengthy.aunt orleana puckett delivered my ancestors children.elizabeth jane page&samuel balsley lived on the mountain and are buried there.
Thank You so much SmokyLover!
We have a surprise for you , check out our latest video!
ok, ok, i'll work on it. but sometimes the ken burns effect makes the photo look almost like video.
What is the name of the song played in the beginning? I looked on the artists' website and UA-cam channel, but I could not find it.
