Dougie fails to say that these " Homes " in the Greenbelt are unaffordable to 90% of Ontarians..
The argument is that it will still increase the housing supply. For a lot of immigrants coming into the country who have money, they will buy them all without a problem. Supply will go up, which will shift the market and reduce home prices in the geographical region. You have to look at the bigger picture. But yes, at face-value, that is true.
Thats not his fault though, when foreign investors outbid the locals by 150k what are the home builder’s supposed to do?
Homes are unaffordable because there are not enough of them, supply and demand is not a difficult concept
This is why we need to build more homes. We have supply issue being enhanced by the federal government. Letting so many immigrants into this country.
The missing word Ford never uses is ‘affordable’ housing. Sure there are plenty of houses foe sale in Ontario but not within the reach of many two income families let alone those that are low income and just scraping by. Constructing expensive houses in the green belt will do nothing for this demographic.
It will increase the housing supply and lower prices across the board.
It would increase the supply of homes in the market, which will drive down prices. The reason home prices are high right now is because demand is at an all-time high, but the supply cannot keep up with the demand. So realtors know for a fact the homes will sell, therefore they price higher. The constant population increase due to unfettered immigration has created this issue. I don't know what else you can expect when we bring in over 500,000 people per year... the vast majority of them stay around the GTA.

My parents were immigrants to Canada in the early 80s. They couldn't afford a home in Toronto. Guess whatbthey did - they moved outside of Toronto to Whitby. I applaud his response.

Opening the green belt is not required to solve the housing issue. That was included in the auditor’s report.

Can anybody born in Canada fathom the risk and sacrifice our new friends take by coming to Canada? Most our new friends can only visit their relatives 1x per year if lucky, it at all because of the cost of living. How do we thank our new friends for helping us thrive? We won't build a condo downtown because the proposed building is too tall, we won't build an apartment on a brown-field site because the lot has trees on it, we won't build a new subdivision because of zoning... I've seen many Green Kevin's & Green Karen's protesting to block all new housing. You need a large space to incentivize developers to build large suburban communities that will actually have an impact. Moreover development in core urban areas is being blocked by lobby groups and municipal governments.

More people would have a home if they first imposed a Federal Rental Increase cap of no more than 2.0% retroactive to 2019, then secured a subsidy for all whose income falls below 20 to 25 Thousand per year with a Guaranteed Subsidy for those below $10000. The solution starts not with building the homes but with securing everyone within one first.

I also speak from personal experience, where I lost my career and financial freedom from covid shutdowns. I worked very hard for 17 years to go from a disadvantaged position to one of advantage, and before I could reap the benefits I lost it all. Now I am loosing the roof over my head due to extraordinary interest rates! I think we need far more action than just building new homes. We need new policy and legislation - period.

His concern for people having homes would seem a lot more genuine if he wasn't actively starving people and causing them to become homeless with the 50% below poverty income rates of ODSP. Max ODSP as of the time of this comment is $1308 per month, while average rent for a 0-bedroom apartment is $1832 per month. - So even if they spend every single cent they get per month for rent, they are still short over $500 per month and we haven't even started talking about food yet or other basic survival needs.
