"the name of the game isn't change, it's development". it seems that the more comfortable I am with chords, scales are target notes, the easier it is to focus on change rather than development. This video is a good reminder that a pleasing phrase is worth repeating and developing variations of.
"You work on improv by refining your skills on certain progressions." This is exactly what I've been missing. I'm definitely stuck somewhere in level 2, but your approach has finally given me a path forward. I recently discovered your channel. I have to say your videos are the most useful I've found to start getting a handle on playing jazz. Although I'm a guitarist actually, not a piano player. I love how you put this: improv means composing spontaneously. And also something I remember you said in another video, the chord progression is the essence of the song. Good improv is not random noodling with scales or randomly stringing together memorized licks, which is where I've been stuck.
Exactly where I was, couldn’t understand why I put a lot of work in but didn’t really get much further forward. I was focusing on the wrong stuff, tunes too advanced for where I was, not understanding what was key. Shan has got me to strip it back, get the foundations sorted, and then you can build forward. Needed a bit of self discipline to stick to the right work, but I’m seeing the benefits.
I always had a hard time applying this concept but for some reason in this video it just connected the missing dots for me. Thanks Shan, your content is looking sharper than ever!
One of my students said this video really helped them understand what it means to develop lines, and I agree that this is a *very* clear presentation describing the process. I made a PDF of your examples; please reach out if you'd like me to send it to you or make available for folks here (if you don't already have it in a PDF.) Cheers!
Bite sized, doable and lots of hidden benefits if you commit to it. It can go as far as you want to take it, trains your ear as much as your fingers and consolidates rhythm and phrasing/articulation.
Hey YT algo: Considering the quality of this content, this channel deserves WAY more subs and views. Question: what software do you use to show the notes you’re playing?
Brilliant lesson - I definitely rush my triplets too , real useful little detail . Thanks for all your great videos

"Composing in real time" is an apt definition of improv. Thanks for another helpful lesson!
