    Truly interesting topic and I would love to learn more about it! How can we teach kids to become more experienced users of the internet and search engines? How do we make them think and use their brain to really dig in deeper, process the data and to become more critical with what is published online? How to teach media literacy and especially critical thinking towards references?

    This video is great as it shows that technology is fantastic tool for learning and connecting. However something which is mentioned at the end "reality can't keep up' is worrying as I see it as the main reason so many of us would rather look at our phones or spend time on social media rather than, or while, socialising in the physical world..
    the random or unpredictable reward Dr. Paul talks of is exactly what makes games and tech so addictive. Its the same mechanics as a fruit machine or gambling for example.l I feel it is dangerous for us to rely on those mechanics throughout our life.
    Add to this, that many of us are ignorant to these mechanics which are used in many games and apps, or even why we are compelled to keep checking our emails every couple of minutes. I feel that this shows that as beneficial as technology is, it does have the power to be a negative influence in our life.

  • @MarkoKraguljac
    @MarkoKraguljac 13 років тому

    @NidhoggKG All concerns you have are also present within the movement. There are no definite plans, leaders or authorities. One thing is certain, namely, circumstances have to get worse and present relations (economic and political) melt in order for something genuinely new and beneficial to be accepted and to happen. Technological disruption helps. Current crisis is deepening and will not so easily dissolve. There are many structural reasons to keep going. Coming years will show whats upon us.

  • @MarkoKraguljac
    @MarkoKraguljac 13 років тому

    @NidhoggKG I am prone to think that such transition, or something along those lines is pretty much natural process that will happen on its own. Question is, in 5, 20 or 100 years. It has no constructive alternatives considering technological progress. Nearly full automation of energy and agricultural production (bases of economy) is within our grasp. It could be our first conscious step in this transition.

    Interesting but nothing new.
    Could we get a debate about manufacturing and service sector automation and its real consequences on economy and possible solutions but without conservative tirades about green jobs, entrepreneurs and similar smoke & mirrors. Real, repetitive, boring jobs are not coming back.
    Why is no one talking about this very tricky but important topic?

    i totally agree about television. probably when (if) i'll have children, i'm not gonna allow them to watch tv, no matter how loud they whine :) i don't really watch tv and i don't miss it.
    but i don't think comics are bad influence! it's just an art-form. some may be violent, but not even close to video games and tv. and those are not for kids anyway.

    It's interesting that delayed, unpredictable reward gives more satisfaction than totally predictable or totally unpredictable reward.
    And I think an implication for education is that: using delayed, unpredictable rewards not only works better (based on the foregoing research), but is also a good simulation of real life later on. This is because, even if we do something completely "right" we still may not be predictably rewarded, though there's a fair probability we will be rewarded.

    Agreed. I would go fruther. I think the internet did a great job educating some people, perhaps all. I do see the people hanging on FaceBook, or chat sites or Farmville or games nonstop, but do we really think these people would be rocket scientists if it weren't for the internet?
    Unlikely.
    All in all, the internet is the greatest educational, artistical, social and cultural revolution in the history of humankind.

    @NidhoggKG nah.. DP has some interesting points but his main goal (maybe unconscious) is to keep present system as it is. Instead of facing technological reality and pushing for freeing of people he explores motivations and possibilities for things to stay essentially the same. At least thats my subtle impression from few of his presentations.
    Nemoj da se osećaš smešno. Što više ljudi razume ono što imamo da kažemo, to bolje.

    @xjustamem0ryx I agree with you but wouldn't it be nice to hear some genuine answers from gray beards and scholars? Imagine them descending from their Ivory towers and proving their worth and wisdom by openly, deeply and bravely talking about this important topic which is before our noses, screaming but never or rarely addressed properly. Hearing distinguished professors going against this stream of mass stupidity and inertial ignorance would return some of their credibility as modern prophets.

    I think somedays I play to much Minecraft, but at the same time it's a great art medium and I love creating my own worlds, so it helps improve my imagination and creativity. And the Total War series taught me diplomacy, politics, economics, war strategies, and history. So I thank video games for getting me insterest and improving my learning. But maybe that's my learning style. Also, my History teacher in grade 10-11-12 used total war to show us famous battles like Zama, or Hastings. ;)

    @Genkaiman You know, in my English class, my teacher added a link on the homework page of my high school with the title "Is the internet making us stupid?". I have complete utter disdain for someone who wants me to be an ignoramus just because a majority of people enjoy social networking. In more ways than one, these educational videos have helped me in many ways to communicate and share ideas along with being able to be a more knowledgeable person.

    He only talks about internet? It's the computer, the device that's more important. I can assume naive users is slow in typing, clicking, detecting, and does not anticipate as much as the experience users. Experienced users memorized the layout of the keyboard, they know where exactly results will come up therefore requires much use of the brain. For the naive users they just wait and see.

    @Alexeon
    of course reading or not depends on the person.if someone truly likes books, not necessarily stops reading.
    setback might not the right word, more like negative influence. e. g. internet can be extremely useful, but most of the people spend 90% of their time online with useless stupid things. there are so many things you could do instead of well.. we know what people do on the internet. i'm not saying that our brain changing is a bad thing, i'm talking about lifestyle.

  • @originaltrixi01
    @originaltrixi01 13 років тому

    i don't think that e.g. deterioration of the language, etc. is a progression. of course there are a lot of positives of the internet, but so many harmful effects too. i have to admit, i use internet every day and i notice a lot of those on myself. i started to read nicholas carr's book on this, but he wrote so many horrible things, i couldn't take it. for example educated people (professors, etc) said, they actually stopped reading books, because they're useless. paper is setback now?

    @Genkaiman SEEMS foolish, indeed. But it also seems foolish to not consider every angle; it seems foolish to to "go along" with "modern life" with out ever questioning what it's doing to us, or what it's done to us, and it seems foolish to never think that there's something wrong with "modern life" and, if there is something wrong, it seems foolish that we would never look more closely at it to mitigate or out and out solve what problems there may be.

    @MarkoKraguljac I just finished watching it, and I'm sad i didn't get to watch it before. As you said, it is a huge step forward in relation to Addendum - it presents a real plan for changing the world. But you have to ask yourself this: can humans just magically turn from one way of life to another without a huge revolution in their way of thinking? There has to be some radical change, or really significant event that would be powerful enough in order for that kind of revolution to succeed.

    Uhm... ok, but bullying still happens in real life too. I think people are only mad at the internet, because there they can actually see and feel how their child is beeing bullied. I know that there's far more open aggressiveness on the Internet but on the other hand its far more easier to ignore those words than it is in real life. So please parents, teach your kids how to deal with those 'haters'

  • @NidhoggKG

    @MarkoKraguljac There is also the question of how much money would be needed to make just one of these cities described in that movie; and of course do you think with the all of the differences among people, do you think it is even possible?
    It really is a nice concept, but I just think in real life just isn't plausible. Sure had effect on me, though. I am now feeling depressed.

    @Genkaiman "It seems foolish to argue for or against a facet of modern life that has so deeply penetrated our day to day lives."
    My parallel was that if there are bad points about it, it's worth debating.
    Just as with the slave trade.

    Design the system to the children who want to learn something faster so that they can do something else can do it. I don't think people need to be taught in year groups, especially in a high school. I think we'd have competitive learning.

    In order to improve learning they used to say that to fully use the brain and to pull more out of it you needed to use the following; seeing, saying (so talking or saying it loudly) and writing. Nowadays we don't do the writing anymore and not only that all these systems are sort of doing it (starting to do it) for us. So we do not imagine in our minds what we are thinking of and what we are writing. I wonder what the effects of that will be in the future.
