Well done trees and the best examples of real trees and their actual positions along rail lines. The scale height is surprising and gives an increased sense of depth to the layout.
I very much appreciate that you include within your videos, mistakes that are made along the way. I just know that I would make the same (and probably more) mistakes if I was not alerted to them before hand.
As a ‘newby model railroader’ and avid UA-cam subscriber on anything connected with this absorbing hobby what has become very clear to me is the varying standard of workmanship on some channels. To my eyes there are a handful of modellers who are head and shoulders above their peers and Charlie, in my opinion, you sure a one of these happy,, witty and instructive band of modellers.
Cheers, mate. I model on the cheap. I make all my own ground scatter (flocking) out of either sawdust that gets coloured in the electric coffee grinder my wife gave me for modeling, or foam rubber done same way in the coffee grinder. That way you can control the colours and the granularity of your finished product. I also make my own iron oxide (rust) by soaking about 4 pieces of 0000 steel wool in a quart jar with white vinegar. After about a month sitting in the window, I pour the mixture into a large pan (I use my old 11" x 14" stainless steel photo fixer trays when I had a darkroom) or baking dish and wait for the mixture to completely dry (usually about 2 to 3 weeks). Then I take a single edge razor blade and pulverize the contents into a fine powder and store it in little tins. Each batch I've done comes out a little different in colour. Then you use the rust as you would any weathering powder or chalk. It looks real, 'cause it IS real rust! I also colour my own chalk with acrylic paint and food colouring. I never buy weathering powders. Instead, I go to the dollar store and buy women's makeup in the little plastic containers. For $1.00 you can get quite a collection of different colours and they adhere better than weathering powders. For trees, I use the Nandena bush after the little red berries fall off, it leaves a perfect tree trunk (armature). I also have a TON of lichen growing out back on the hill behind my house. When using the Nandena bush tree armatures, you can paint them whatever colour you want--even grey for aspen trees. Cover the armatures with lichen, seafoam or whatever you want, then add your own home-made flocking and you're done. For pine trees, I use florist wire (wrapped) doubled and bits of jute cut in1 to 1 1/2" laid in the wire, then using a drill, twist the wire while holding the other end in a pair of pliers.. I also use barbeque bamboo skewers with pig hair (horse hair) furnace filters (they're already green); have to paint the skewers first. Cheers from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

Charlie, I use green floral wire from amazon. I wind 18 laps of wire between 2 nails 16 inches apart. Fold the bunch in half, twist them in the middle to make a 1 inch loop ( the roots) and then twist the lot together up the "trunk" until the first limb divide. Then on up and out as you go. I then dip the top of the tree into liquid latex rubber 3 times, give it a shot of brown paint, then a suitable bark color. Then spray the outer branches with cheap and cheerful sticky hair spray and woodland scenics medium greem coarse ground foam about 3 times. Add NOCH leaves and off you go. Bob Schworm

Model Trees are definitely a whole new science.. Learnt a lot here.. I think instead of the grass flock il have to invest in the 'leaf' type scatter as you say Charlie.. Sometimes my trees have looked a bit clumpy and dense... You encouraged me to have another go..
I like your trees and I have realized that I can make them taller, than I first thought. The idea to have taller trees in the front of the layout to make it look more three diamentionel is great. I have just started making trees myself after the same principle as you - I learned it from Luke Towan, as I wrote to you earlier - , but when I cut the wires, I put the wire around a glas jar or a tin can that has the right diameter to get the length, I want. I tape a small stick to the tin can to make it easier to get cutting pliers around the wires. Then I don't have to cut the wire for each length.
Tremendous video Charlie! Drone shots are superb. Always great to see you round up with the lessons learned (else I would have put them in the comments! lol) Making tree's is my nemesis at the moment, so always keen to see another have a go. Winners so far after 4 attempts, tree's 4, me nil! You seem to be fairing much better, I await vid 2.
There are a few tips for building a railroad layout yourself Find a proven set of plans online Find a colleague who wants to build one too so you have someone to encourage you (I read these and why they work on Jareks Hobby Club site )
Charlie, love your videos and will now have a go at tree making. Just wanted to give you an idea of mine because I’m on a tight budget and find the grass and leaf products expensive. A friend of mine has a carpentry workshop and always has sack loads of sawdust. I sieve the stuff into jam jars various grades and mix with the cheap kids poster or acrylic paint. Bottles from places like Wilkos, Hobbycraft and Poundland! Lots of shades of green mostly. Then dry in the oven and sieve again back into the jars. I’m making loads of my own stuff. I guess it’s how it’s made by the specialists anyway! Best wishes.
Having found your channel, i decided to watch a bit more, as always when I subscribe to a new channel I always go back to the very first video, ( I remember mine it was terrible ) now as Landscape gardner I am always complaining on the relation to trees and Modell railway ( they are completely wrong ) so it was interesting to see how you made these trees, I hope to be rebiulding my Railway in H0 ( as I live in Germany ) so your videos have been a real insperation to how to do many things I shall be keeping my beedy Eye on you and looking forward top seeing more insperational videos 👍😂
Just an idea for the initial twisting of the wire. Use a cup hook, thread through the loop of wire. Fix down the loose end. Put the cup hook and wire in to a drill, run the drill at SLOW speed and there you are a nice twisted trunk or large branch. So you won't twist the night away!
Another great video thank you. I've been watching your videos for quite some time now and seem to have picked up two sayings which are now stuck in my head now. "Good to go" and "That's where we are". Haven't a clue where I got them from :) Keep up the good work.....
Tell you what charlie i was having a word with the mrs about this subject last week, i came up with trees that actually move like they would with the wind in real life, this is done with a cheap loco decoder and a servo under the board pulling down slightly with a hidden piece of fishing line on the branches, it looks out of this world, especially with a soundscape playing at the same time, really adds atmosphere and realism! the overall effect is surreal i tell ya. BR love trees as theyre wind blockers for the trains
Thanks yea when i get time ill do a 10 minute video, your TMD setup has inspired me to do a single track tunnel with 2nd radius setrack hidden curves then all the rest coming out of the tunnel will be flexitrack, my board is 5ft5in x 2ft 7in so in N gauge this will be a pretty bloody big tunnel! lol will only need to be 7cm high, but instead of a tmd there will be a station and large glass engine shed made by Faller, of course ill leave the back of it open in case of running issues either that or fit a magnetic backplate that can easily be removed when needed
Thanks, yea just built a ratio footbridge, the detail in it is unbelievable, this one: www.osbornsmodels.com/248-ratio-covered-latice-modular-footbridge-5748-p.asp im absolutely blown away with how much detail there is in my farish class 37 colas rail, it has zimo sound, cab lights the lot, it wasnt cheap but man you can see why! im avoiding Dapol stuff, the motors in them are terrible on N gauge, got all my dcc accessories ready for christmas the digikeijs dr5000 and block detection unit to match, im making a start on the back tunnel first it will be slightly raised about 4.5cm so i can put various other trackside stuff underneath at the front, yea will be a challenge alright! this little (tiny) class 37 puts a huge smile on my face every time i look at it, such a work of art this thing, it beats anything from hornby in oo gauge by a country mile, and runs so slow you cant tell its moving, it has Paul Chetters sounds in the model, they sound unreal.
Charlie, Warley is always a good exhibition, even though I haven't attended in years. I have found brushing on pure white glue onto the horse hair base and dusting with your favorite leaf material to be much better than spray glue or hairspray. I found if I was'nt careful horse hair could become too clumpy.I now use a very fine nylon material that I can tease into a very light base cover for the smaller branches. As an extra idea Pendon on their trees use a hot glue gun to cover the main trunk of the tree instead of tape.I'll watch out for the next video.Cheers, Chris Perry.
I’ve been collecting stuff for my layout and have the sea-moss for fine branches, and coarse green stuff (can’t remember its name) for the leaves. I think I’ll get the leafy stuff as a last layer to give it the leafy look. That rubberised horse hair would be great as rough weedy dead grass. It looks to be the right colour already. I think your next tree will be even better.

I need to try this with my wired tree bases. I LOVE the wired bases, LOATHE trying to get tacky glue to get clump foliage OR Lichen as an over top. This may be nicer than using Woodland's fiber foliage, I know a hell of a lot cheaper than theirs for sure.
@@ChadwickModelRailway I'm doing a batch of trees up this week. I'm going to give this one a shot. I just did a bunch of trees from furnace filter for a DIY vid coming up BUT I need more variety in my layout than what I have gone with so far.
I've also reached this stage of the layout build where I'm thinking about adding a few trees so seeing your video has given me something to think about although I'd use a cheap hairspray for the adhesive spray, this works well for me on the scenic landscape and smells better than Spray Mount!
Hi Charlie, I hope you don`t mind me being honest because I`m not sure that the "Horse Hair" product has given the best result, so I will be very interested to see what method you use on the next tree. When making tress I go to my local park and pick-up lots of dead branches and twigs of various sizes depending on what size trees I wish to make. To strengthen the twigs/branches I take them out into the backyard and spray them with PVA Wood Glue, then it dry overnight. Next I use a product from Noch which is much finer in texture that the "Horse Hair" (when you post your next video I will see if I can give your the full name of the Noch product I use). Having done that I spray it with diluted PVA wood glue to provide body and extra strength. When it has all dried I paint with a small brush wood glue to the areas where I want the leaves to adhere, then I drizzle those areas with Noch leaves. Regards Greg

Hi Charlie. I have been watching some videos made by Boulder Rail Road Creek and he's making his trees more or less the same way as you, but with variations. They are very nice looking. If you can find the time, you might want to watch some of his videos. The appletre and the pinetrees especially are very good.
hi Charlie, another great YT clip, and a nice choice of topic to do a ‘How-To’s’ clip on Tree’s, I often take photos of tree’s throughout the year just like you did at the start, to give you a good understanding of Branches, how far up the tree they branch out etc, which was excellent to see. Did you use a drown as it was great footage, and if so, what type model etc of drown do you use...?, I also drown and you can get some superb footage of a landscape, and like you said around the railways where it always seems to get overly overgrown compared to what we see on the Road headway’s, until Network Rail go down the line once every 5-8 years. A lot of work but you've really done an admirable job Charlie! On balance though and as a matter of personal preference I might be tempted to go for the £/€20 ready made trees if I needed just a handful or up to 10-15 say (I'd just have to stop buying locos for a little while however painful haha!) But I can certainly see the benefit when building "proper sized" layouts as yours. Joachim

Hi Denise, I think this should be quite simple. Just divide your real measurement by 64 And that should give you the correct result. If however you’re converting from another scale such as HO which is 1/87, multiply the HO get measurement by 87 and then divid it by 64. Im no mathematician but that might work. Regards Charlie
Hi Chalrie on a different subject your knees when you announced that you were changing the layout to save having to crawl underneath Shortly after I had the same problem but unfortunately I don't have the space or resources (live in NZ) so temporarily moved the controller to the exterior but it is inconvenient and now with December on us to busy anyway for modelling But anyway after the history I have been for xrays this week Anyway when my discomfort started I was taking Panadol every 4 hrs and having sleepless nights which ever way I tried lying it was uncomfortable sitting and I was severely limping I used to have a lower back pain and I was given an exercise to help ang it works any way with my knee problem I wondered if I modified the exercise so this is what I do lying on the bed (easier than on the floor) stretch the leg up as far as will go fold down then pull the knee into my chest pulling with my hands relax and then repeat with the other leg I do this 3 to 6 times each side then lying on back with folded up move legs from side to side keeping back still at the moment I am not taking panadol am not limping and sleeping well I don't know if this will help you but it is low impact so can't do any harm and who know my help you all the best for Christmas my Friend

A nice final (or end of part 1) outcome. I have to agree with you that the treemendous leaf scatter made all the difference at the end. If you haven't already I would check out Luke Towan's video on the same technique. It is more laborious using thin wire, but thicker wire just looks like twisted thick wire. Great tutorial. Cheers

@@ChadwickModelRailway Hi Charlie. I don't have the first idea about shooting, editing, etc video or how much of a potential hassle it would be to add music to it. I recall a short while ago quite a few of the channels I subscribe to falling foul of music licensing and having to take down and re-upload videos. If you weren't talking then maybe, but you tend to be talking (and that is not a criticism! ;-) ) and giving incite to why and what you're doing most of the time so it would have to be very much in the background and no one would be listening to it anyway. It seams like centuries since I have done scale trees, but I remember that you do not cut your armature wire to the same length. When doing deciduous trees we sized the wire length in 1/3 increments with no two quite the same length. With coniferous trees you cut the wire to length in bunches with about 1/4 inch between them.
Thank you Charlie, for another really enjoyable and informative Video. I was wondering about the possibility of perhaps using a large stiff Paper Bag or even a Woman's Hat Box to assist with applying the Leaf Scatter. Simply hang/hold the Tree upside down in the Bag/Box and shake the Scatter over the prepared and sticky top Part of the Tree. Obviously you'd have to spray the Glue onto your Tree Form first then pop it into the Bag/Box after. It might save a lot of Mess and help save the Scatter that doesn't end up being stuck to your Tree.

Many lessons learnt with that build Charlie. I’m really glad you do these videos though, it stops us from following similar pitfalls. All in all though I think you’ve got a very nice tree out of it in the end. As a matter of interest, what sort of time frame was required to construct this one tree? Paul
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Paul. The armature took around an hour and another 15 mins to tape and paint. The next day, the foliage took around 15 minutes, 5 to spay paint and 10 for the foliage. It’s best to do a couple of tress at a time but make sure that they are different.
Charlie, as I’m over 70 albeit fit, still run 5K each morning, however my Eyesight is not has good as it once was what Magnifying Visor would you recommend? I model British O Gauge and Canadian HO short line. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. It’s a beautiful morning here in North Devon too, hope it’s as nice in Somerset.

I've seen a couple of your videos in which you put down grass and I've seen various others, what type do you like best because I don't know what to do.
I really can’t decide for you. I prefer static grass if it’s close but scatter, if it’s further away. I suggest you do nothing until you’ve attended a Model Railway Show and you’ve seen the options available.
There are a few factors in building a railroad layout. One place I found which succeeds in merging these is the Jareks Hobby Club (check it out on google) definately the most useful blueprint that I have ever heard of. look at the unbelievable info .

@@ChadwickModelRailway I,just today took a piece of door mesh and sieved through my garden soil.a lovely ballast it makes i tell you.i then went over it with a fine kitchen sieve and produce myself some brown 'scatter' as they call it.this was effective,but i thought there would be a more professional way to do it=-)

There are a few tips for building a railroad layout yourself
Find a proven set of plans online
Find a colleague who wants to build one too so you have someone to encourage you

Charlie, love your videos and will now have a go at tree making. Just wanted to give you an idea of mine because I’m on a tight budget and find the grass and leaf products expensive. A friend of mine has a carpentry workshop and always has sack loads of sawdust. I sieve the stuff into jam jars various grades and mix with the cheap kids poster or acrylic paint. Bottles from places like Wilkos, Hobbycraft and Poundland! Lots of shades of green mostly. Then dry in the oven and sieve again back into the jars. I’m making loads of my own stuff. I guess it’s how it’s made by the specialists anyway! Best wishes.

Having found your channel, i decided to watch a bit more, as always when I subscribe to a new channel I always go back to the very first video, ( I remember mine it was terrible ) now as Landscape gardner I am always complaining on the relation to trees and Modell railway ( they are completely wrong ) so it was interesting to see how you made these trees, I hope to be rebiulding my Railway in H0 ( as I live in Germany ) so your videos have been a real insperation to how to do many things I shall be keeping my beedy Eye on you and looking forward top seeing more insperational videos 👍😂

Just an idea for the initial twisting of the wire. Use a cup hook, thread through the loop of wire. Fix down the loose end. Put the cup hook and wire in to a drill, run the drill at SLOW speed and there you are a nice twisted trunk or large branch. So you won't twist the night away!

Tell you what charlie i was having a word with the mrs about this subject last week, i came up with trees that actually move like they would with the wind in real life, this is done with a cheap loco decoder and a servo under the board pulling down slightly with a hidden piece of fishing line on the branches, it looks out of this world, especially with a soundscape playing at the same time, really adds atmosphere and realism! the overall effect is surreal i tell ya. BR love trees as theyre wind blockers for the trains

Thanks yea when i get time ill do a 10 minute video, your TMD setup has inspired me to do a single track tunnel with 2nd radius setrack hidden curves then all the rest coming out of the tunnel will be flexitrack, my board is 5ft5in x 2ft 7in so in N gauge this will be a pretty bloody big tunnel! lol will only need to be 7cm high, but instead of a tmd there will be a station and large glass engine shed made by Faller, of course ill leave the back of it open in case of running issues either that or fit a magnetic backplate that can easily be removed when needed

Thanks, yea just built a ratio footbridge, the detail in it is unbelievable, this one: www.osbornsmodels.com/248-ratio-covered-latice-modular-footbridge-5748-p.asp im absolutely blown away with how much detail there is in my farish class 37 colas rail, it has zimo sound, cab lights the lot, it wasnt cheap but man you can see why! im avoiding Dapol stuff, the motors in them are terrible on N gauge, got all my dcc accessories ready for christmas the digikeijs dr5000 and block detection unit to match, im making a start on the back tunnel first it will be slightly raised about 4.5cm so i can put various other trackside stuff underneath at the front, yea will be a challenge alright! this little (tiny) class 37 puts a huge smile on my face every time i look at it, such a work of art this thing, it beats anything from hornby in oo gauge by a country mile, and runs so slow you cant tell its moving, it has Paul Chetters sounds in the model, they sound unreal.
Charlie, Warley is always a good exhibition, even though I haven't attended in years. I have found brushing on pure white glue onto the horse hair base and dusting with your favorite leaf material to be much better than spray glue or hairspray. I found if I was'nt careful horse hair could become too clumpy.I now use a very fine nylon material that I can tease into a very light base cover for the smaller branches. As an extra idea Pendon on their trees use a hot glue gun to cover the main trunk of the tree instead of tape.I'll watch out for the next video.Cheers, Chris Perry.

I’ve been collecting stuff for my layout and have the sea-moss for fine branches, and coarse green stuff (can’t remember its name) for the leaves. I think I’ll get the leafy stuff as a last layer to give it the leafy look. That rubberised horse hair would be great as rough weedy dead grass. It looks to be the right colour already. I think your next tree will be even better.

I need to try this with my wired tree bases. I LOVE the wired bases, LOATHE trying to get tacky glue to get clump foliage OR Lichen as an over top. This may be nicer than using Woodland's fiber foliage, I know a hell of a lot cheaper than theirs for sure.

I just did a bunch of trees from furnace filter for a DIY vid coming up BUT I need more variety in my layout than what I have gone with so far.

With hairspray I couldn’t get the leaves to stick.
Clearly I need a stronger hairspray.
I've also reached this stage of the layout build where I'm thinking about adding a few trees so seeing your video has given me something to think about although I'd use a cheap hairspray for the adhesive spray, this works well for me on the scenic landscape and smells better than Spray Mount!

Hi Charlie, I hope you don`t mind me being honest because I`m not sure that the "Horse Hair" product has given the best result, so I will be very interested to see what method you use on the next tree. When making tress I go to my local park and pick-up lots of dead branches and twigs of various sizes depending on what size trees I wish to make. To strengthen the twigs/branches I take them out into the backyard and spray them with PVA Wood Glue, then it dry overnight. Next I use a product from Noch which is much finer in texture that the "Horse Hair" (when you post your next video I will see if I can give your the full name of the Noch product I use). Having done that I spray it with diluted PVA wood glue to provide body and extra strength. When it has all dried I paint with a small brush wood glue to the areas where I want the leaves to adhere, then I drizzle those areas with Noch leaves. Regards Greg

Hi Charlie. I have been watching some videos made by Boulder Rail Road Creek and he's making his trees more or less the same way as you, but with variations. They are very nice looking. If you can find the time, you might want to watch some of his videos. The appletre and the pinetrees especially are very good.

hi Charlie, another great YT clip, and a nice choice of topic to do a ‘How-To’s’ clip on Tree’s, I often take photos of tree’s throughout the year just like you did at the start, to give you a good understanding of Branches, how far up the tree they branch out etc, which was excellent to see. Did you use a drown as it was great footage, and if so, what type model etc of drown do you use...?, I also drown and you can get some superb footage of a landscape, and like you said around the railways where it always seems to get overly overgrown compared to what we see on the Road headway’s, until Network Rail go down the line once every 5-8 years. Hi Jamie, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. I use a DJI Phantom 4 Pro, which is so easy to fly once you understand its limitations.
A lot of work but you've really done an admirable job Charlie! On balance though and as a matter of personal preference I might be tempted to go for the £/€20 ready made trees if I needed just a handful or up to 10-15 say (I'd just have to stop buying locos for a little while however painful haha!) But I can certainly see the benefit when building "proper sized" layouts as yours. Joachim

Hi Denise, I think this should be quite simple.
Just divide your real measurement by 64 And that should give you the correct result.
If however you’re converting from another scale such as HO which is 1/87, multiply the HO get measurement by 87 and then divid it by 64. Im no mathematician but that might work. Regards Charlie
Hi Chalrie on a different subject your knees when you announced that you were changing the layout to save having to crawl underneath Shortly after I had the same problem but unfortunately I don't have the space or resources (live in NZ) so temporarily moved the controller to the exterior but it is inconvenient and now with December on us to busy anyway for modelling But anyway after the history I have been for xrays this week Anyway when my discomfort started I was taking Panadol every 4 hrs and having sleepless nights which ever way I tried lying it was uncomfortable sitting and I was severely limping I used to have a lower back pain and I was given an exercise to help ang it works any way with my knee problem I wondered if I modified the exercise so this is what I do lying on the bed (easier than on the floor) stretch the leg up as far as will go fold down then pull the knee into my chest pulling with my hands relax and then repeat with the other leg I do this 3 to 6 times each side then lying on back with folded up move legs from side to side keeping back still at the moment I am not taking panadol am not limping and sleeping well I don't know if this will help you but it is low impact so can't do any harm and who know my help you all the best for Christmas my Friend

Good to see you back, Charlie! I think the tree came out well. I must say I've not heard of rubberized horse hair before. I like the way you finish with lessons learned. I know I've learned many! I tell people I don't make the same mistake twice, I always think of ways to make new ones! Looking forward to your next video! I wonder if coarse turf would look any better?

A nice final (or end of part 1) outcome. I have to agree with you that the treemendous leaf scatter made all the difference at the end. If you haven't already I would check out Luke Towan's video on the same technique. It is more laborious using thin wire, but thicker wire just looks like twisted thick wire. Great tutorial. Cheers

@@ChadwickModelRailway Hi Charlie. I don't have the first idea about shooting, editing, etc video or how much of a potential hassle it would be to add music to it. I recall a short while ago quite a few of the channels I subscribe to falling foul of music licensing and having to take down and re-upload videos. If you weren't talking then maybe, but you tend to be talking (and that is not a criticism! ;-) ) and giving incite to why and what you're doing most of the time so it would have to be very much in the background and no one would be listening to it anyway. It seams like centuries since I have done scale trees, but I remember that you do not cut your armature wire to the same length. When doing deciduous trees we sized the wire length in 1/3 increments with no two quite the same length. With coniferous trees you cut the wire to length in bunches with about 1/4 inch between them.
Yes the armature was interesting having never made one before. We live and learn.

Thank you Charlie, for another really enjoyable and informative Video. I was wondering about the possibility of perhaps using a large stiff Paper Bag or even a Woman's Hat Box to assist with applying the Leaf Scatter. Simply hang/hold the Tree upside down in the Bag/Box and shake the Scatter over the prepared and sticky top Part of the Tree. Obviously you'd have to spray the Glue onto your Tree Form first then pop it into the Bag/Box after. It might save a lot of Mess and help save the Scatter that doesn't end up being stuck to your Tree.

Many lessons learnt with that build Charlie. I’m really glad you do these videos though, it stops us from following similar pitfalls. All in all though I think you’ve got a very nice tree out of it in the end. As a matter of interest, what sort of time frame was required to construct this one tree? Paul
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Paul. The armature took around an hour and another 15 mins to tape and paint.
The next day, the foliage took around 15 minutes, 5 to spay paint and 10 for the foliage. It’s best to do a couple of tress at a time but make sure that they are different.
Charlie, as I’m over 70 albeit fit, still run 5K each morning, however my Eyesight is not has good as it once was what Magnifying Visor would you recommend? I model British O Gauge and Canadian HO short line. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. It’s a beautiful morning here in North Devon too, hope it’s as nice in Somerset.

I really can’t decide for you. I prefer static grass if it’s close but scatter, if it’s further away. I suggest you do nothing until you’ve attended a Model Railway Show and you’ve seen the options available.

There are a few factors in building a railroad layout. One place I found which succeeds in merging these is the Jareks Hobby Club (check it out on google) definately the most useful blueprint that I have ever heard of. look at the unbelievable info .

@@ChadwickModelRailway I,just today took a piece of door mesh and sieved through my garden soil.a lovely ballast it makes i tell you.i then went over it with a fine kitchen sieve and produce myself some brown 'scatter' as they call it.this was effective,but i thought there would be a more professional way to do it=-)
