Denise Ditton Hi Charles, My name is Denise Ditton nee Mc Donnell and my family has originated from Cribb Island as far back as 1915, when my Great Grand Parents Samuel and Clara Simpson bought a holiday house at the corner of Cribb Parade and Elmslie St. They eventually moved into this home where my Grandmother Florence Simpson lived from the age 2 yrs. My Grandmother went on to marry Ronald Wallace Donely and continued to live on Cribb Parade, My Great Grandmother Clara continued to live in her home until she was moved to a nursing home and the house was sold. I was born in Brisbane but originated from Cribbie as were my four elder brothers to my parents James and Shirley Mc Donnell nee Donley. we moved off Cribbie in 1970 for my fathers work commitments.
Donna Hosken My dad was born there 1922 Jack Beck he had sisters Millie Cecily and Connie I'm sure his mum's name was Alice not quite sure on his dad's name .. dad grew up to be a blacksmith at Cribbie until the early '60s, he then met my mum at Redcliffe and they married and he built a workshop in Knight st he supplied many, many horse folk with shoes. He could make them for draught horses all the way down to the size of a 50cent piece. He was well known throughout the trotting circuit. We went back to Cribbie for visits to see his old home and to see an elderly couple we only knew as Nana and Pa Light that seems to be unknown to some of the locals from there... Dad passed away in 2005 .. I miss Cribb Island so sad not to be able to show my grandkids what pure unadulterated living was like.

Good luck with your project. Sorry for the spelling…lol

Hello everyone! I’m late to this discussion on Cribby, but if anyone is still out there, do these surnames ring any bells: BAXTER, WEST, CHANCE, RADFORD? If so, please let me know, as I have a distant relative from these families - one of whom lived there in the 1930’s onward. In fact, a home from Cribb Island was re-located to Capalaba where my grandparents lived. Great video Mr. Sparkes!
I lived down from Nudgee orphanage and was at Cribb Island a lot as a child as it was our short family Sunday drive to Cribb island kiosk to buy a weis bar and sit by the water, soon as I could drive I was down there a lot with no licence and a unregistered car ha ha, the local copper Ben knew but never bothered me, as a teenager I played in the Cribb island picture theatre for there dances and fancy dress parties. One of the dances a guy comes running up to me on stage and says the drunk who lives in the projection room is going to shoot you if you don't turn down the music, (yes we were loud 70's rock) sure enough I looked up and there was shot gun sticking out of the projection hole aimed at me, being 17 I thought I am not turning down for nobody and said to guy tell him I will give him a bottle of rum he does not shoot me tonight, the word came back he agreed, now not one my smartest ideas to give a mad man with a gun a bottle of rum, but the show must go on, I lived to play another day lol it was a different era.
Lyn McConachy Gavin Rylatt Hi Gavin, that house belonged to my grandparents. They bought it as a holiday house then finally moved there. Zendler was their name. My sister & brother both lived there as well at one time after their marriages. I lived at 21 Elmslie St with my 10 siblings. Fitzgerald’s. my family left there in 1966. Thanks for posting
You would have been close to my grandmother.. i think she was 28 Elmslie.. Mrs Ivy Conder...she stayed to the end... they relocated her in Redcliffe till she moved in with my mum (gran's daugher) and my dad..
Robyn L Jackson Robyn Jackson née French. I grew up next door to the Broadbent’s . 9 Higgins Street. There were 8 in our family -Mum (Dorothy) and Dad (Richard)and the 6 kids. Russell, Nancy, Kevin, Robyn, Dennis and Gordon. My parent lived there from when Dad returned from the war until they were forced to leave because of the airport.
You may recall my grandparents the Conders.. they lived next door to the Gibbs in Elmslie street.. the next house along after the Gibb's place... Cecil and Ivy... idk when they moved to Cribbie, but that's the only place i knew them to live (i was born in 1955).. they had 12 children .. 11 survived into adulthood.. Grandad was a watchmaker... they did the laundry for the Shingle Inn Cafe in the City.. i remember they would get up really early to press the Serviettes in this big press... Gran had an old wringer washing machine and then a twin tub.. i still recall the old wash board and the copper boiler to heat the water.. the bluo to whiten the serviettes etc they would load all the clean pressed serviettes into a large old brown hard suitcase, the kind like our old school bags were made of.. we would then catch the bus to Brissy and take the pressed serviettes to the Shingle Inn.. we'd go down an alley to the staff entrance door to deliver, as a kid i thought it was pretty cool .. i recall going up to the Theatre, where my aunty Cathy would buy us treats.. she and Yvan were married in the hall on the Island... as far as i know, there are only 3 remaining Conder children alive... i have very fond memories of Cribby... my Gr'P's also had a little fish n chip store in the next street over, the same one as the theatre.. my brother & i went over to the Gibbs house... we were only 5 & 6yo at the time this video says they lived at Cribbie.. i went to the school there as a guest for a few days.. i have so many great memories of Cribbie.. climbing my grandparents mulberry and loquat trees.. mint in the alley way up to the fish n chip shop.. the beach.. i almost lost my heel at that beach on someone's broken beer bottle awash in the shallow water's edge... was a Sunday and no doctor available.. by the time we got to see a doctor it was too late (in those days) to stitch it up.. so on my bed i would have to stay with my foot up to let it heal... that was a hard week or so LOL I was so sad 🥲when they closed it down!! Funny, i was just telling my daughter about Cribbie earlier today and then i was looking for something totally NOT to do with anything Cribbie and this video pops up in the search results... i loved Cribb Island... So pleased to find this clip 👍🥰
Sandra Gerhardt Our family history at Cribb Island goes back to my great grandparents Walter and Sarah Collinge who bought a property at 206 Cribb Parade in 1937. Their daughter Joy was born at Cribb Island in 1940. When she married William (Bill) Moynihan they purchased the property across the road at 207 Cribb Parade and their children Sandra, Michael and Julie were born there. We only moved when we had to. Rob Burton Sandra Gerhardt Yes, and fate would have it that after your grandmother passed, your parents agreed to rent the property at 210 Cribb Pde to my Mum and Dad, along with their 5 scruffy children, starting what has been an amazing long lasting friendship between our parents and families. My Mum's family (Edna and George Jeffery) had already settled in Cribb Island at 254 Cribb Pde, raising their own 4 children, including my beautiful Mum, Sylvia. But after marrying Dad, our family moved away and then back again to Cribb Island several times. It always felt like home to us, which I guess always drew us back.

Evictions are a horrendous thing. Abandonment happens afterwards, and what is left is a ruin.

Charles , my grandmother Edith Campbell moved to Cribby to a small house not far from Sam’s pie shop must have been about 58 or 60 years ago she stayed a few years I have great memories of visiting her.My parents the Bryant’s moved to Cribby a few years later we brought a house in Higgins’s st we lived opposite John and Pat Jackson and family.
My mother Carrie Bryant worked at the post office with mr Brathwrite and I think she was the second mail lady delivering the mail by push bike. My sister Edith lived there with us until she married then when she had her daughter Allison they moved t back to Cribby at a house in Higgins’s st she was then Edith Gray married to Jim. They latter moved to a house opposite the small food store they lived there for a good few years. Allison is now 48.
Myself Beth Bryant back then went to school on the island then like the others went to Banyo high school
At a young age I married Michael from the O,Brien family of Cribby . Our first child was born there Paul he is turning 50 next year. I was a member of the uniting church and was involved in the youth groups, Went roller skating 3 times a week run by the Stanton’s . In the same hall went to the movies, Played cricket on the road. Had mud fights up the creek, went fishing in our old boat, had fireworks nights on the mud flats.looked forward to the rides that used to come to the end of our road on occasion and the first ride was free, watched Sam the pie man go from a horse drawn cart to his wagon with the best pies ever.Sadly my Dad was one of the last to leave Cribby under protest after the government stole our home he rented it back until was forced out, I had to fly down from Townsville to convince him he had to go or he would have no power…
Like all of us who knew Cribby we miss it dearly.. Good luck with your project. Sorry for the spelling…lol

We went regularly & the adults to play euchre & I watched TV as we didn't have one ourselves. I looked I to kitchen via the window in the lounge into the kitchen. Dinner used to be frankfurters lettuce onion & tomato salad in vinegar & bread. Loved it.

LOL that's a funny story 😂.. thx for sharing

Robyn L Jackson
Robyn Jackson née French.
Gran had an old wringer washing machine and then a twin tub.. i still recall the old wash board and the copper boiler to heat the water.. the bluo to whiten the serviettes etc they would load all the clean pressed serviettes into a large old brown hard suitcase, the kind like our old school bags were made of.. we would then catch the bus to Brissy and take the pressed serviettes to the Shingle Inn.. we'd go down an alley to the staff entrance door to deliver, as a kid i thought it was pretty cool .. i recall going up to the Theatre, where my aunty Cathy would buy us treats.. she and Yvan were married in the hall on the Island... as far as i know, there are only 3 remaining Conder children alive... i have very fond memories of Cribby... my Gr'P's also had a little fish n chip store in the next street over, the same one as the theatre.. my brother & i went over to the Gibbs house... we were only 5 & 6yo at the time this video says they lived at Cribbie.. i went to the school there as a guest for a few days.. i have so many great memories of Cribbie.. climbing my grandparents mulberry and loquat trees.. mint in the alley way up to the fish n chip shop.. the beach.. i almost lost my heel at that beach on someone's broken beer bottle awash in the shallow water's edge... was a Sunday and no doctor available.. by the time we got to see a doctor it was too late (in those days) to stitch it up.. so on my bed i would have to stay with my foot up to let it heal... that was a hard week or so LOL
I was so sad 🥲when they closed it down!!
Funny, i was just telling my daughter about Cribbie earlier today and then i was looking for something totally NOT to do with anything Cribbie and this video pops up in the search results... i loved Cribb Island...
So pleased to find this clip 👍🥰

Our family history at Cribb Island goes back to my great grandparents Walter and Sarah Collinge who bought a property at 206 Cribb Parade in 1937. Their son Thomas (Tom) lived with them until he married his wife Annie in 1939 and they bought the house next door at 210 Cribb Parade. Annie's mother Jane Harriss also lived with them. Their daughter Joy was born at Cribb Island in 1940. When she married William (Bill) Moynihan they purchased the property across the road at 207 Cribb Parade and their children Sandra, Michael and Julie were born there. We only moved when we had to. The house at 206 Cribb Parade was bought by Walter's daughter Elsie and her husband John Simpson when both Walter and Sarah passed.
I would love to know if Karthy Conder is still around.
I still love her.
Lorraine Gray

Sandra Gerhardt Yes, and fate would have it that after your grandmother passed, your parents agreed to rent the property at 210 Cribb Pde to my Mum and Dad, along with their 5 scruffy children, starting what has been an amazing long lasting friendship between our parents and families.
Marilynn Lynch
Grandma McGregor had her holiday house there. Uncle Archie and Uncle Colin were her sons. Wonderful memories
