I remember in 71 sitting on a bench at my local plaza after school waiting for my ride home, the loudspeakers playing this song across the street from the local record store. not understanding the foreign language, but the music left me numb. All I could remember was Aqualung. 50 years later I found an old copy of the album at a goodwill and now I relive this masterpiece everyday😳

I was born in 72, and grew up in a home with so many people listening to different music and they turned me on to all the awesome music, from their era, my uncles, and a few aunts, cousins, brothers and friends, and my own as well. When I had cash, I used to buy him a warm bowl of chili, from this hotdog joint. He scarfed it up, and just nodded his head without saying a word. In fact I never heard him utter a sound, but after being around him , you knew he wasn't deaf. While I was away in the service, I heard he had passed away. When I came home, my friends told me he had over 200 grand in a bank account! That wasn't allocated anywhere..so the state kept it. Well, shit, I should have bought him more chili....

Much of the older music has qualities that most newer music does not. The artists...such as Tull, Yes, Floyd, etal, grew up with classical training and influences. Their music belays this experience and construction.
You know that feeling you get when you hear someone talk about a song, and out of curiosity or boredom you look it up, and it turns out to be a song that you heard a million times as a kid but never knew the name of? Yeah...and all because one character in a game I was playing was viciously insulting another character, and one of the insults she used was "Aqualung", and I just had to find out how "Aqualung" was an insult. Now I know, and I've been reunited with an old classic from the good old days. So I guess I owe a hearty thanks to Luna from BlazBlue! ...not a game you would expect to reference an American 70s rock song...but then again, there's JoJo's Bizarre Adventures and its barrage of classic rock referencing. The moral of this story is: Music ties EVERYTHING together! :D

The Army refers to the Salvation Army, confirmed a couple lines later (Salvation a-la-mode) They help the homeless and downtrodden But he is a the end of his rope - the Army is up the rode from where he is. Rode, as I believe it is used here is a nautical term that refers to an anchor rope on a boat. The anchor is on the bottom, and he is nearing bottom. Thinking about other references, this makes sense to me.

The roughness and vulgarity, I think, is why it's overlooked sometimes in greatest rock songs of all time. Aqualung was invented by Jacque Cousteau today we call it scuba tanks it's also slang for someone who has pneumonia.

Much of the older music has qualities that most newer music does not. The artists...such as Tull, Yes, Floyd, etal, grew up with classical training and influences. Their music belays this experience and construction.

You know that feeling you get when you hear someone talk about a song, and out of curiosity or boredom you look it up, and it turns out to be a song that you heard a million times as a kid but never knew the name of?
Yeah...and all because one character in a game I was playing was viciously insulting another character, and one of the insults she used was "Aqualung", and I just had to find out how "Aqualung" was an insult. Now I know, and I've been reunited with an old classic from the good old days. So I guess I owe a hearty thanks to Luna from BlazBlue!
...not a game you would expect to reference an American 70s rock song...but then again, there's JoJo's Bizarre Adventures and its barrage of classic rock referencing.

@@MsAppassionata Love. I know that sounds trite, but there is something to it. Actually giving a damn about your fellow man. Even the most downtrodden in society. Rather than ignore the easily ignored he gives voice to this man, and his troubles. Without making excuses for him or championing him he does seam to care about him.
In the next song Anderson is an apologist for a school age prostitute.
Kind of a companion piece. I think Anderson was trying to give voice to the types straight society can look down on. Not complimentary, but rather honest without judgement.

The Army refers to the Salvation Army, confirmed a couple lines later (Salvation a-la-mode)

But he is a the end of his rope - the Army is up the rode from where he is. Beyond Salvation.

Rode, as I believe it is used here is a nautical term that refers to an anchor rope on a boat. The anchor is on the bottom, and he is nearing bottom. Thinking about other references, this makes sense to me.
But it does say the Army up the road /rode. So they used the word rode for a double meaning? Yes. This song is a masterpiece. The roughness and vulgarity, I think, is why it's overlooked sometimes in greatest rock songs of all time. It's not Strawberry Field Forever you know...."eyeing little girls with bad intent and every MOTHER'S favorite..." snot is running down his nose" Which ofcourse being really really little my brother and I were first exposed to this song by our uncle ten years my senior and well you know yelling out " snot is running down his nose" didn't bode well with her. The kindness and the food he gets from the Salvation Army is probably keeping him alive! Salvation a-la mode means help plus food!! And it’s road not rode! Lyrics sound alike ! Doesn’t matter how they’re spelled! He gets along just Fine!
