    • @curtlewis2795
      @curtlewis2795 5 років тому +6

      @@ronburgundy244 Not a bad movie, per se. But the dancing of the two principles is just rudimentary. They pulled off what they were asked to do but that's the point -- Gosling and Stone were not asked to do much because they don't have the dancing ability. There's no shame in that but the actors of today simply do not have the triple- and quadruple-threat talents of those in Hollywood's Golden Age. There are, to be sure, actors on Broadway who can sing, dance and act on par with anyone of the past. But movie-goers today can't tell the difference anyway so producers do not mine the stage for multi-talented people of no particular fame when they can get big names of lesser ability to carry the box office

    Ok I usually don't comment on videos but I have to with the superiority that is Gene Kelly. For those that don't understand that this is true talent because there is no "twerking" just stop. This isn't some edited scene clipped together because the actors weren't able to film it in one go. This is one take of precision entertainment and perfection. From an actor who is known for being a stickler for getting every move right. This was a man who was proud of his craft and worked at it until he physically couldn't anymore.

    Out of the newspapers and squeaky board the ever exceptionally-versatile Mr Gene Kelly was able to create a brilliant,groundbreaking,and commendable solo tap-dance number as one of the main attractions in MGM's Summer Stock.How exuberant,inventive,and well-coordinated his dance steps & his animated interaction with the papers & the plank were.His whistling,his board-tapping,his paper-ripping,and Mr Harry Warren's beautiful music had remarkably produced truly-wonderful sound and pleasant mood.

    I envy anyone who has never seen this before; the surprise toward the end was such a delight the first time I saw it. My very favorite part is when he gets up on those steps & digs in (4:03-4:09). What a powerpack! I have to scream "woo!" every time I watch it. This highlights GK's innovation & playfulness, and is an island of perfection in a dismal movie made only tolerable by Gene's charm & his chemistry with the heartbreakingly sweet Judy Garland.

    I love this movie, because if you know the back story behind it it's really touching. This was the last film Judy did with MGM and originally Gene wasn't going to do it. He did it for her. His first movie at MGM was with Judy, For Me and My Gal. He was a rare and amazing talent, something that Hollywood is missing today. I don't know if I'm the only one I doubt it, but when you watch these old movies they actually get you to feel something not just enjoy the flashy effects.

    The primary difference between Astaire and Kelly is that Kelly seemed to put a little muscle in his step, while Astaire seemed like floating. But this clip demonstrates the delicate, caring, observant Kelly. With that said, one cannot, should not, compare two of the greatest figures in musical/movie history. They were movie perfection in every step. This scene is one of my favorites because Kelly is projecting a sort of child-like curiosity that simply leaps into our hearts like a loving memory.

    Athletic & graceful! If You watch carefully, the man was strong in ballet training as he incorporated into a "hip" & amazingly precise masterful piece of physical art that is worthy of his dedication, all around skill as an actor, dancer, & innovator. Amazing!!! Where has this kinda talent gone? It's still around, we just have to want it again!!!

    i see alot of ppl on this page arguing that gene kelly is a better tap dancer than mj. although that is true, u must know mj wasnt about tap, he was about dance in general. i believe mj was the greatest dancer ever because even though he wasnt the best at a certain style, he covered all styles and moulded them all together. at this he was the best. watch his panther dance if u wanna see him tap dance..
    anyway this is a gene kelly vid, plz just watch his genius and enjoy it...

    I like MJ but the "King" is a postumous title given to him by his die hard fans who had NO art work of him on thier UA-cam pages before his death and alot of usernanes on Yotube with his name in the title who's accounts didn't exsist before June 25th..
    King of Pop title was given by E. Taylor who was his best friend and again his fans rolled with it.
    MJ had never been called King at all by the media or peers while alive both times it's been his fans which don't count for objectivity.

    Do you think the taps were done live on this one? Normally they are dubbed in later. I can't imagine it would be easy to dub this number when it predicates on the specific sounds coming out.

      Dejardin was definitely influenced by Gene Kelly while filming The Artist. He liked how Kelly always seemed so grounded and always had a smile on his face while dancing. I think Kelly would have appreciated the film.

    When it came to making musicals with our late friend Gene Kelly in them after the 30's were over, he pretty much was always put in charge of the dancing sections, especially if he was the leading man.
    This innovative incorporation of a creaky floorboard & a newspaper sheet were one of many results of his own creative freedom :o)
