I love this..... I ride ONLY OTTBs and do OTTB rehab working directly with trainers off the track to give thoroughbreds from the track and rehab injuries then retrain for barrels, poles, breakaway and team roping. They have an amazing work ethic and it's very easy to move too fast with these horses because they WANT to work. If you put in the slow work it ALWAYS pays off in the long run. My daughter and I attend a Josey Clinic each year with whatever OTTB horse we are training at the time to really help us fix holes we are overlooking to best prepare these horses for their new homes. We leave in 2 weeks for Josey Fall Clinic and for the first time in a long time, are taking OTTBs that already have found their forever homes with us. Look for Rylie-Kay Nugent and Holy Pearls, and me on That's It I'mLeaving next year at the TIP Barrel Race in Kentucky.

Love this. Where I live, people HATE thoroughbreds for anything western. I have an appendix colt from a race winning family on bottom and roping family on top, and he'd make an excellent barrel prospect. He's very fast and can turn with the best of them out in the pasture. Easily outruns my full quarters. We had a couple of people be very interested in him until they actually look at the papers. Then it's "Sorry, I'm looking for a quarter horse." Unbelievable. If he were a year older, I'd market him to the English riding people around here, because who wouldn't love a buckskin gelding right at 16 hands? But he's only 3 this year, and I know most of them don't want to start until the horse is more mature, which is understandable. I've met a couple of thoroughbreds that could easily blow the local quarter horses out of the water on barrels and poles, but people just don't seem to count them. At the very least, he has some color and a lot more size on him than most of what I see, so he has something really going for him, but it just amazes me how people only look at the names on the papers and not the actual merits of the horse.

Love your videos! Are you able to make a video on fitting a western saddle to a TB? ❤️❤️

I personally have each of my OTTB's custom fit for saddles because their types very so drastically. For a custom fit barrel saddle with quality that far exceeds the price, look at Big G's. I personally have 1 built for each of my barrel horses and the improvement that each of my horses made just from having a saddle especially built to fit them makes the expense so worth it. If you ride a large number of horses or cycle through horses frequently this may not be feasible, but if you have your "one" and want that perfect fit.... I would certainly recommend Big G. (And I just sold a $3500 MJ Ultimate Revolution with a flex tree that they sold to fit all my geldings..... it didn't. I was able to build 2 custom saddles with same quality for the resale price of the MJ).

Can my 17 hand horse barrel race

Most definitely. I have a 17 hand OTTB gelding that is a very competitive barrel horse. He finds it harder in the small pens sometimes as he can't really open up between barrels, but on a standard pattern he excels. You just have to learn that with a larger longer bodied horse that you need a little more pocket to get them around the barrel in 3 strides without blowing out the backside. I also have to remember on my bigger horses to push them all the way into the pocket rather than checking them too early, because it's harder for them to make the quick corrections. They also will eat up the home stretch and make up time they lost in their turns.
