Therefore, it is a great idea to spend some time reviewing information for the nursing specialty for which you apply. For example, if you're going to interview for a cardiac unit, you'll want to review common cardiac diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, myocardial infarction, heart valve disease, and basic dysrhythmias.
In addition, you'll want to review common tests and procedures for the specialty. Using the example of a cardiac specialty, you might to review basic information in pacemakers, stress tests, and common tests for this specialty.
In addition, it's a great idea to review some of the popular medications used to treat common cardiac conditions, as well as the nursing interventions for the various conditions.
In the cardiac specialty, you might receive questions such as "If a patient complains of chest pain, what you do as the nurse?" If as a question about nursing interventions for heart failure, you'll want to list things like monitoring I/Os, daily weights, low fat/sodium diet, etc.

Great overview and you hit it on the head at the end. Especially for new grads, the interview isn't really to test for knowledge or experience, but to gauge how someone is a person and if they would be a good fit for the unit. The best tip I can give is to be yourself and let your personality shine! The interview is not meant to knock you down so don't be nervous going in and know its just another person that you are speaking with. Have confidence in your answers and show them why you would be an awesome nurse on that unit!

Recently I have attended an interview, they have given me 6 types of patients with different disease conditions and they asked me that how can I manage each of them according to the case priority. That was difficult.
    1) Chest pain, hypotension, tachycardia
    2. Dimentia& restless
    3. Bedsore on Iv antibiotics
    4.Bedridden with Iv fluids
    5. A patient after surgery
    6. Patient with DM and has hypoglycemia regularly.

I'm glad you brought up asking another nurse. When I first started, one of my mentors would always say she worried about me (later, I found out it was because I never asked for help). Now, I can't think of a shift when either I asked, or someone asked me to wrap our heads around a problem. The culture of a team is so important to healthcare that the interviewer should be impressed that you are willing to make the safe call and phone a friend. Thanks.

A question that came up in my interview was "How do you decompress after a stressful day?". Of course I was being myself and joke a lot, I said "Well, Valium helps".... They did not find that funny lol! I understand their concerns with that answer, but I made it super obvious that I was joking. I don't think working in such an uptight hospital would be right for me anyway. However, I won't be taking anymore chances with my humor again. I am going to try these tips instead. I will save the jokes for after I get the job :))

Sarah, I wanted to just thank you for all the videos you post and the information you give to so many nursing students. The videos, along with quizzes, have helped me so much through my own nursing journey. I recently took my NCLEX last week, and received a “PASS” and you had a role to play in that. Thank you so much! You made a difference for me! I started my first nursing job in the ER yesterday! ♥️

I had an interview for the ED as new grad! I didn’t get it ...I wasn’t bummed though...I saw it as practice and God telling me I wasn’t ready.
The interview was quick! Like 16 mins she asked me to tell her about herself before I can even sit down (lol) what was my weakest or toughest class in nursing school, what do I know about the hospital and if I had any questions...I stumbled a little bit overall I didn’t think I did terrible. There were not scenario based questions 🤷🏽‍♀️

This video got me thinking about my knowledge. I graduated in 2010, worked in the ER for about a year, and now work in an orthopedic surgeon’s office. I really have zero physical patient contact, but speak to many of them on the phone. I’m thinking about getting a job in the hospital, but am terrified because I have forgotten a lot of what I learned in school and the skills I learned in the ER. I’ve been doing a lot of review, but the more reviewing I do, the more I learn just how much I don’t know. What else can I do?

I applied for L&D and panicked when they asked me my own definition of cultural humility and equity. I know the answer, but at the moment I was so transfixed with the other questions and I was on a roll. I panicked and went blank. It was horrible. I felt so stupid after. It is painful to be volunteering at the same hospital too

I just got my BSN and RN license and moved to Alaska and it is damn near IMPOSSIBLE to find a MedSurg job up here as a new grad. I don't know if it is because of COVID or Alaska is simply too unpopulated. But I've been to about 5 interviews for various doctors offices and what I keep getting asked over and over is why I applied to said position when "the world is your oyster" (yes, they said that) and "you could have any MedSurg job you want" (direct quote). Obviously, I didn't want to hurt their feelings by telling them the truth (I couldn't find anything better), so it was really difficult to answer these questions.

    • @thesunnyedge

I was asked this question that stumped me over the phone! It was for a Triage RN position in an outpatient setting, "What would you do if a patient calls complaining of chest pain?" I felt silly being stumped but I didn't know what to say since the patient is on the phone and not there in person for you to assess

i know you hear this all the time but, i would absolutely love to be a Registered nurse. I honestly did horrible in high school and i do not have good test taking strategies nor am i a good test taker. I'm already 21 years old and i haven't even started prereqs because I'm just super scared i might not even pass those. Do you think nursing is for me? I've done a ton of research and I can see myself being a nurse until I'm 60 years old despite all the negative things i hear about the nursing field i still want to embrace it but, again.. I'm scared i might fail. do you think i should try? or just keep dreaming?

    • @meerschweinchenn

i'm someone who did very poorly in high school, and i'm a few weeks away from graduating RN school right now! if it's something you're passionate about, go for it. nursing school and nursing isn't something people can really describe to you until you get into it and can understand what they're talking about. i was very overwhelmed at first, i felt like i was being trained to be a doctor. you learn critical thinking, medications (side effects, contraindications, education, assessment, labs to consider etc.), nursing interventions, nursing skills, teamwork, assessment, charting, medication administration, time management, leadership, disease processes/treatments, procedures, tons of paperwork, and so on.
the upside to this is the difference you can make for your patients. you're their advocate and last line of defense, so you have to make sure you speak up for them and you make sure all doctor orders make sense. when you step onto a floor, you get report from a nurse and you gotta make sure that report is accurate. when you leave, you give as accurate as a report as you can. that patient is someone you should care about whether you're clocked in or not.
you're going to have to deal with difficult family members. there is a LOT of educating patients and family too! you'd be surprised how many people have been diagnosed with something for years, but don't even know what that means or how to manage it (hence their hospitalizations). i've met patients who don't know what vegetables are, or they don't understand why they need to take insulin. a LOT of patients also take the handfuls of meds prescribed to them without even knowing what they are!!
through clinical, you'll learn what floors you like and don't like. it's okay to feel unsure the entire time. i still don't really know what i want to do!

You never know, unless you try........
I have 12 years as a medical assistant and nursing school is the same for me as for those who have no medical experience, I have medical terminology and some medications, but Nursing school is more about CRITICAL THINKING, just like she said in the video! What actions is MOST IMPORTANT?
Give it a shot, you might surprise yourself!

As someone who did horrible in high school, barely showed up and barely passed, I felt the same way when I started college. But I just graduated nursing school and my NCLEX is in a few weeks! In my heart I always knew I wanted to be a nurse, and if you feel the same way and you’re passionate about it, you will step up to the plate and do what you have to do to make your dreams come true! And as far as not having studying skills, focus on learning what works for you during your prerequisites! You dont want to regret not trying, if it doesnt work out then it doesnt work out but at least you will have tried!you gotta believe in yourself! ❤️

I was petrified to go to nursing school, I had graduated in 1985 and my high school diploma said I was proficient in booze and boys..haha 🙄 when I signed up in 2005 (?) I had never used a computer, never sent an email, didn’t know what a blog was, could barely remember how to type. On my entrance exams I wrote on the computer part of the test “I have no idea, I need a computer class” ...well I was accepted, 1st class was computer, everyone was tapping away and I was feeling like the instructor just gave me instructions in a foreign language....it was horrible....but I did it ! Nursing school was horrible....but I did it.....I didn’t think I was smart enough.....I graduated with a GPA of 3.85........you can do it !!!

I am wondering what would be the way to answer why I've taken such a long time off.
