Since it's written on the paper “❌*100+3156" so he counted the x's in the elevator part which in total of 12. Then substitute to wuts written on the paper 12×100+3156 = 4356
I don't know if it's clear and you still need this.

Count the stars on the walls = 12
Use the paper clue to get a 4 digit number.
12 * 100 = 1200 + 3156 = 4356
