I love Larry Bird, Pistol Pete, and I love Caitlin Clark. But IMO i believe Pistol Pete was the best guard to ever play the game. His college career will never be matched. His NBA career would've been much better had he played for better teams. I'm surprised to this day the Lakers never picked him up. He would've thrived, and won championsips. His life was lost way too young, with a bad heart; or I seriously believe he'd have been a great NBA coach eventually. RIP Pistol Pete.

I was in the Boston Garden for every big game from 81-88. Clark is more like a Jordan, only she can pass Jordan couldn't. Bird, Magic, Jabbar, Wilt and others were better than over rated Jordan. Not sure Clark will end up being the greatest player ever? I would have to say she won't, just too small like Jordan. I'd always take the big guy over the small guy. CC needs to have the big players to pass to, without that, she'll be just another Jordan who NEVER beat the best players. Jordan got his azz kicked his first 7 years until the best players were broken. Then he got his chance to win. Not one doubt she'll be the best guard to ever play in the WNBA, but probably won't be the best player ever. We laughed at Jordan at the Garden when he tried to guard Bird, all 15,003 of us. She is a better 3 point shooter than Jordan and 10 times the passer than he was.

You mentioned Larry Legend. I was born in 77. I saw my first nba game when I was 10 years old. My grandfather got tickets through his job and took my dad and I. Yes, I was supremely lucky
I saw the Celtics and the Bulls. It was game 3 of the 87 playoffs, first round. Bird had 32 with 14 rebounds. Dennis went 24 with 10 assists. MJ shot for 30.
I saw 6 hall of famers that night. Bird, McHale, Chief, DJ, Parish, and MJ.
That night made me love basketball, and made me felt accepted by the two most important men in my life.

90% from FT line is automatic for Caitlin. 40% from 3 is gonna be a challenge considering her high volume of attempts and the distance (deep 3's) she loves to pull up from. 50% from the field is very rare and challenging for backcourt players as much of their attempts are perimeter-oriented. Absolutely I think Caitlin will join that club.
I also think it's a coincidence that I've been yelling all over the place about how Caitlin seems to me eerily like Bird, and until I came here today all I heard about it was crickets-- nobody seemed to agree! You say that alot of folks have seen the similarity, so I believe you, but I sure haven't heard or seen it.
Here's what I wrote the other day about Bird and Clark:
Am I the only one who sees Larry Bird in Caitlin? For me, the similarity is downright eerie, and although it's been obvious to me that certain other players have studied Bird and incorporated some of his moves, I've never seen anyone who overall reminds me so much of Bird's game.
The IQ, the precision, the timing, the skill, the creativity-- imho Bird far surpasses Clark in all of these, but then again, I'm not able to remember and distinguish his rookie play from his later game, so it may well be that she's closer to him in his rookie year than I'm thinking.
Regardless, she's already spectacular, and obviously a workhorse with an incredible love of the game and a fierce ambition to improve, so there's no doubt she'll improve exponentially each year. And as she does, I'm betting she gets even more and more similar to Bird, in her passing and everything else.
I don't see his quick release, his sleight-of-hand, his wily misleadingness, his amazing no-look and tap passes, his level of hustle and aggressive steals and some other things in her game, but I'm thinking those things and others will come in time.
Don't know, though, if she'll ever have a game as witty and funny as Bird's. Again, if I had to bet, I'd bet yes...that once she's taken care of the more fundamental aspects of her game, that will emerge automatically, from what I can tell of her personality.

That's not to say I think she can't, I just think she's got a ways to go. Ultimately, I don't really care if she does or doesn't, because it seems pretty clear, she is very likely to be the best player for at least the next 10 years.

  • @jimmyboy131

I get that people say she's like Larry Bird but I'm still not fully there yet. She gets steals, which Larry did too, but Larry made the All-defense 2nd team three years in a row, before he injured his back. Clark isn't that good on defense. Well, she could improve maybe.
Her college career stats for shooting are 46/38/86, close but I think she reasonably can do it. She's only had her rookie year, and an especially rough one, too. In time I'm confident she'll do it. Stephen Curry only hit 50 in the field goal slot once in his career, but his 3 pointers and free throws are consistently there. Larry Bird's career averages were 50/38/89, pretty dang near that mark. But he had a four year stretch where he averaged at least 50/40/90, and 28 points, nearly 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Those were his years where he also won three consecutive 3 point contests and three consecutive league MVPs. He's called Larry Legend for good reasons.
Then there's Larry's unparalleled trash talking, which if he did that today he'd get banned from the league. I don't think CC is that level of savage, though.
But anyway, as Magic Johnson said at Larry's retirement ceremony: "there will never ever EVER be another Larry Bird!" The world is still waiting. I'd love it if CC can prove to be the female Larry Bird.

Since coming to the WNBA CC has taken on a completely different role and function then she did in college. In college she was an off guard and primarily a shooter. That is why she was taking those logo shots, making them and getting famous for doing so. Since coming to the WNBA she has taken on the role of point guard due to necessity. Besides her the Fever don't have a good point guard. Mitchell is a great shooter but not a point guard, so she takes on the role CC played in college for the Fever, a shooter. As point guard CC has the responsibility for setting up plays and players to take shots, thus she gets fewer shots herself. She also gets lots of assists as the point guard. As a PG she also has opposing players right up in her face almost all the time as she tries to set up plays. If the Fever ever get another good point guard (it would have to be a really good one) CC might return to the position of off guard and get more shots and PPG. Bird was considered a 'point forward'. He also set up his teammates for shots but he got his fair share. In many ways CC resembles Bird and has that kind of value to her team.

To compare Angle Reese with Magic Johnson is so disrespectful to Magic as a person, as a competitor, as a team mate! Reeses shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as that man!The only "stats" that Bird and Magic cared about was the WIN! It's a team game yet Reese only cares about herself.
Both Bird and Clark have had to deal with race issues. Larry has said that he kind of enjoyed it because it meant he was going to be battling them all day, every day! He used it as motivation. Clark too is dealing with that specter but in a much different way. Clark has shown nothing but grace and class in taking whatever the haters can throw at her and she comes back even stronger, doesn't get involved with the negative crap, just keeps applying her trade at every game which just makes all of the haters look so small, petty, unlikable. How can you NOT like this kid? Like Bird, she is very humble and honest at every press conference, no excuses! Like Bird, she is not afraid to go into any other teams arena!

Thank you Adrienne. I Have No Doubt whatsoever that Caitlin could Accomplish The 50/40/90. I’ve been watching her games since junior high, and Being a Lifelong Hawkeye, Ive Seen Her just get Beter and Better thruout Her Career. And it seems that whatever challenges Caitlin has Faced throughout that time, She has always found a way to not only Adapt and Adjust, but to excel and perform better and better. and if there’s one thing I know about her among many things, its that She Has a Drive and Passion Unlike any Athlete Ive ever known in my Lifetime. Just Look at Everything she accomplished in this entire first season as a Rookie, coming in with no rest time, straight out of the NCAA finals, not even knowing her teammates, or the league and how things work there. She put up incredible numbers despite being scratched, Bulldozed, knocked down, pulled punched, smacked poked, held onto, etc etc. I could see the bruises and scratches, gauges, on her shoulders, the back of her elbows, her Face and forehead, her legs and her neck , by the halfway point of the season, and I had never seen her body with so many marks on it, and Ive been watching Her play a long time in Her career and She Endured all of this Abuse in Her very first season in the WNBA, and She was still able to Achieve some amazing and fantastic Accomplishments despite all of that. I can only imagine, just thinking what it would’ve been like if she would’ve been welcomed with open arms and been treated equally, vs all of the vicious , nasty Abusive aggression and Hatred she had to deal with. And Adrienne, You are so correct when you say she will get better and better watch and see. I’m not claiming just because I’m a lifelong Hawkeye and have been watching her for all these years that I know exactly what’s going to happen, No , of course I don’t, But I Have Never seen Caitlin back down from, not only her own personal challenges, but challenges that she has Fsced with Anything in Front of her, throughout her career. God Bless You too Adrienne. And I’m just adding one more point here, for those who don’t know Caitlin, -Throughout her life, her downtime is any simple Leisure things, she enjoys simplicity off the court, Family and friends are Super important to CC, she loves to golf, go bowling, Arcades, Trivia and any kind of little Fun games, and because she’s very competitive, and Shes a Fanatic when it comes to Pizza,
    All Pizza-
Pizza is her Number #1 go to for Cure-all, It helps her Relax , Helps Her Decompress, but Sometimes Pizza actually helps her focus prior to game time, in moderation of course. You can bet your bottom dollar that right now Caitlin is decompressing, enjoying the simple and taking in everything from this year, Moment to moment, going over things internally, While still keeping it simple and enjoying her leisure time, Because Caitlin is so proficient at Balancing many things in her life simultaneously. Thats Caitlin.

First of all, I want to slap you for posting something that made me think Larry Bird could come to Indiana to coach. While in Italy as a 14-year-old in the early 70ies, I listened to NBA games over the Armed Forces radio when I should have been sleeping. I was totally in love with Larry Bird's game later in the decade and got excited at the thumbnail! But you instead threw a stat gauntlet. While I believe Caitlin is fully capable of a 50-40-90-something season, I'm not sure I want another season of team sacrificial stat padding to make it happen and I definitely don't want to see more of Christie Sides fumbling around at coaching.

Just to kind off hit on the intro. I never got into CC because of her Logo 3's range...its always been about her passing. Her ability to create points by using her team mates is the best gift she has in her basket. She reminds me of a early 00's Steve Nash, and as a Canadian he is the pinnacle player we provided to the sport "we" invented.
That is why I fell in love with CC. She passes like no one has in nearly 20 years.
Nash hit 50/40/90 4 times the most in basketball history. Almost did it 5 times hitting 89.9 FT and almost has a career 50/40/90 average.
That is who CC resembles to me. Not Bird but one of the greatest unsung guys to do it. Steve Nash. That is who she should be compared to.
