(4K) San Francisco to Hong Kong TRIP REPORT United Airlines UA 877 Boeing 777-300ER Economy Plus

- This past Sep 2023, I made a trip to the Far East for the first time in nearly 4.5 years. For this trip it was in Economy Plus and ominously began with a technical delay about an hour and 20 minutes. Thankfully the issue was resolved and off we went. Overall, the flight was uneventful. The dinner was pretty good and the breakfast was just okay. The service was typical United, not that great but not that bad.

At 5:32 is one of the coolest sounds in aviation! When the GE90’s start up and the sound vibrates through the cabin. Awesome!
Totally agree!
Those GE-90s are the best engines on a plane I’ve heard
Absolutely agree, the GE-90 115B are the best!
Its a pity that was nightime but you did your best lam a new subcriber hoping to see your videos the food on the plane was fantastic happy 2024 from jerry
Thank you so much for your support. Indeed it was a bummer that the landing was in darkness. I was hoping that the technical delay would also delay the arrival so that I would at least capture the arrival at dawn but we sped across the Pacific too fast. Cheers and happy new year!
I haven't been in the United Club you visited in this video. It looks a lot nicer than the ones I visited at SFO. I like the Maple leaf lounge at SFO. Good trip report.
Thanks Jeff. I hope to visit the Maple Leaf Lounge one day. I usually make the long trek from the international terminal to this UA lounge as it’s the biggest. The other 2 lounges including the international terminal can be awfully packed and it’s not big enough.
@BayAreaTraveler the last one I visited was E and it was crowded and small. I'll try to visit the one in this video. It looks a lot nicer. Thanks!
happy new year 2024
Happy new year to you as well!
I envy those of you who fly this route now. 20+ years ago when I flew from Chicago to Hong Kong twice per month, I had to connect through Tokyo Narita. When the jetstream was really blowing, the 747s and 777s had to make a refueling stop, so there was no nonstop service offered.
Wow, I have to hand it to you, that is a lot of flying you did! Certainly the improvement in fuel efficient planes have made a lot of journeys a bit easier these days.
@@BayAreaTraveler Happy New Year!. I was managing the Asian Six Sigma consulting operations for the consulting group of Motorola University, and then picked up Europe, as well. My twice monthly itinerary was: Chicago to Hong Kong via Tokyo, Hong Kong to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, back to Hong Kong, from there to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Madrid or Amsterdam, from there to London, and then back to Chicago. In 10 days. 6 nights sleeping in hotels and 3 nights sleeping on airplanes. I'd do my laundry at my condo in Chicago, catch up on emails and phone messages, and then back to O'Hare to do it again. 200+ nights/year sleeping in hotels. 30+ sleeping on airplanes. Fortunately, I was able to do that in First Class. Business Class seats back then weren't "lie flat"; they had about 55° of recline. That would have been awful. I was worn out, and retired in 2004 at 54. Saved my life. My only flight since then was a one-way ticket (OK, 3 tickets; I brought my 3 small dogs with me) to France, where I've been happily living for the last 2 1/2 years. I may never get on another plane again.
Thanks for not speeding up takeoff!
No problem, I’ll never speed up the takeoff and the landing :)
Please use your overhead reading light when filming thr inflight meal as it is too dark to see clearly what was served
Point taken. Thank you for the feedback. Will do so for future flights.
Try brightening your screen. It was perfectly visible.
when i went on this flight in summer 2023 i got delayed 1 hour because of technical thing too
Interesting they served breakfast because it's morning in the US haha.
Actually it was really early morning in HK 😂
How do you get such good night video on a phone? I thought for sure you were using an actual camera or camcorder. I use my phone to film flight reports as well and find it almost impossible to get good footage at night.
The iPhone 13 does a pretty good job with night filming for the most part. It’s okay when there is adequate ambient lighting but it does poorly when light becomes largely absent and the footage becomes grainy which is the case during takeoff.
quick questions, is there starlux in sfo cuz starlux flys to sf starting december 2023?
Starlux started SFO to TPE service back in mid Dec 2023.
Was the seat comfortable enough for almost 13 hours?
Good question. In my opinion, the seats are not comfortable. I usually bring a small pillow to support my lower back.
this is the flight my grandma actually took to hong kong in September 20 2023 and i am suprised it is united flight 877 cuz its the same flight number that she took
quick question, is there still cathay at sfo serving sfo-hkg?
@@dimsumtho12gas61 Yes, Cathay also flies SFO to HKG
Does Economy Plus seat comes with United Club Louge access?
Does not come with Club access.
@@BayAreaTraveler oh okay. Thanks 😊
So how as the food andservice?
Typical United service, not that great but not that bad. Food was okay. Dinner was pretty good but breakfast was just okay.
Is your flight to Hong Kong 50 to 75% full and how many hours did you sleep on the plane?
This flight was 99% full. There were only 2 empty seats in Economy. I probably slept around 5-6 hours.
I see, wow. Okay thanks.
How many of the cabin crew wore disposable gloves during the flight?
Not sure, I wasn't paying attention to them wearing disposable gloves.
It's for trash collection only
@@eliayase6974 feels safer when the crew is wearing gloves
Premium Economy seat is row 20-22 or same as Economy Plus seat row 30-35?
On the 777-300ER, Premium Economy is 20-22 and is entirely separate from Economy Plus, rows 30-35
@@BayAreaTraveler So how can I get Economy Plus instead of Economic seat? Just pay more or base on a status upgrade?
@@BMCHP When you book through United, you can just pay the Economy Plus seats outright. For trips to Asia from the US, the Economy Plus seats run roughly $200 dollars more than standard Economy. However, if you are Premier Gold and higher, Economy Plus seats are offered at no additional charge at booking. Premier Silver members are offered Economy Plus within 24 hours of departure assuming seats are still available.
@@BayAreaTraveler You answer all my booking questions. Thanks Big Time!
Oh God, I need a drink 🍺
the food looks mediocre and very small portion sizes.
