Hi SiRobb, excellent video, thank you for showing all these things. I have a Bilstein strut and spring set (B12 Pro kit) for my 2001 or my 2002 S60 D5s. I have a weird problem, the top of the struts are loose in the top spring seat hole and rattles. the kit is definitely for my cars, it is not the wrong model. Have you heard of this problem before? Any ideas?
Could that top bearing/ rubber mount cause a knocking rattle ( front nearside) on uneven surfaces, on my XC90 2013 90Kmiles.?.....I cannot find anything loose or worn with wheel off.
Another very useful video SiRobb. I'd appreciate some advice on diagnosing a knocking noise on my XC90 ('55 Reg). It was very noticeable at low speeds - parking lot manouvering when going over speed humps and driving over potholes, and also when turning full lock when driving over the dropped kerb onto my driveway from both directions. I recently - last week - replaced the front drop links with some Meyle HD ones and the noise has almost gone completely. It's a noticeable improvement. But there is still some noise and I was wondering what noises the Macpherson assembly can make in the circumstances described above, or how one can diagnose for sure whether struts are wearing out? About a year ago I rebushed the wishbones with Meyle bushes, replaced the ball-joints, replaced the steering rack with a re-built one (track rod ends are only a year older), replaced the front wheel bearings, discs and pads, and firmed up the gearbox mounting with your clever bicycle inner-tube trick, and also added the subframe mount inner bushes (the blue silicone rubber ones). Just about the only things I haven't replaced in the front of the car are the struts and the engine moutings (top and bottom). I'd really like to make the car run without any knocks, so I'm wondering if there is a fool-proof way to diagnose Machperson noises? Thanks again for a very informative channel.
@@sirobb You're welcome, SiRobb. No, I don't have one of those things. But there is no popping sound from the engine with the oil filler cap off. Doesn't that indicate that the vaccuum mounts are still okay?
A Volvo S60 but front Macpherson strut components and the principles are common across most cars. There may be some differences though so always check.
@@vladdragu6093 I`m guessing you heard that from US youtubers or forums, cause I have same concern. Soon I will refurbish my struts and I will clean any rust and coat with bitumen or other corrosion resistant material.
Hello maaan regards from finland😉😉. Can u do for us video how to clean oil separator !! As the D5 dont have oil evaporated like gasoline car. I have volvo D5 exatly same engine and i wana clean that part.

Fantastic mate, I'm just about to carry out this job on the wife's 2002 S60 D5 along with shock replacement. 👍
You can now buy the whole shock complete on eBay to replace. Thoughts?
Great video again Rob and thank you so much. Can you provide a link to the Volvo parts catalogue?

Love the videos simon very informative
do you need the spring compressors for reassembly? didnt look like there was much tension
You have zero chance of reassembly without spring compressors.
Very useful video ,,again 👍👍

No never heard of that.
If the parts are correct and the same as the old ones, it should fit the same.
Also Rob, what's the best way to tell if the springs need replacing?
If it isn't snapped, it's likely OK.
Pretty much everything else gives up through wear and tear before the spring.

It could be.
Check the drop links also.
Yes, it is for 90% upper rubber mount.
good job si mate

Have you properly checked the vacuum engine mounts with a vacuum tester?
@@sirobb You're welcome, SiRobb. No, I don't have one of those things. But there is no popping sound from the engine with the oil filler cap off. Doesn't that indicate that the vaccuum mounts are still okay?
No, you still need to test the mounts properly before eliminating anything.
@@sirobb I see. Well I guess I'll need to get a vacuum tester. Thanks again for the help and advice.
No problem. They're a brilliant and cheap tool to have regardless.
It can be a brake bleeder and fuel system bleeder as well as the more obvious uses.
Interested to know what car you are working on ?
A Volvo S60 but front Macpherson strut components and the principles are common across most cars.

How many miles ?
Have you ever had a core plug failure?
200+K miles. No I haven't.
SiRobb when you remove the struts you noticed rust on strut tower? I heard that this is a problem with p2 cars ?
I've not seen any car which doesn't get any corrosion on front struts.
They're really exposed so it's not a problem specific to P2 Volvos.

What was it like to drive afterwards? Quieter?
Not quieter as it wasn't noisy before but it rides and steers so much smoother now.

It's just near the oil filter but I have no intention of cleaning it as I have no issues with oil or crankcase ventilation.

Hey rob, is the coil realy needed?!
I don't understand your question.
Sorry rob! I mean do you really need the rubber coil spring (upper and slower rubbers)
05:00
Certainly on the bottom because it's metal on metal but I also did the top as it's in the parts catalogue and only adds £26 to the job.
Thx mate! I just orderd it! Thanks for your video’s! Keep up the good work!
