The best fights of Larry Holmes career are the fights where Larry had to overcome adversity... Fights like this here Mike Weaver fight and then Ernie Shavers 2 rematch and then Ronaldo Snipers and Tim Witherspoon as well as the Bone Crusher Smith fight in 1984... All those fights made Larry Holmes prove his greatness by overcoming adversity...
@@Deizulh I'll pick the late championship years of Larry Holmes, the Larry that beat Bone Crusher Smith back in 1984, and that was a worsening of Larry Holmes and even that version of Larry would've beaten the breaks off Oliver McCall... Completely agree. A different type of challenge Larry had was against Leroy Jones. Larry won by TKO and only lost maybe one or two rounds----and Holmes was never hurt. However, Jones got off to a strong start---like Cosell said, he was doubling and tripling up on jabs. He was a big, overweight guy who was more of a boxer than a puncher, and Larry looked perplexed/unsettled for a few minutes. Jones fans say Larry started thumbing him in the eyes to gain an advantage. Years ago, I was actually in a group chat with Larry Holmes and asked him about that fight and pointed out that he was being hit by Jones. Larry said that if you're fighting a guy who there isn't much film on, and you've never fought or sparred with, never really even saw him in a gym---sometimes you deliberately take punches early in a fight to see what the guy has. He implied that some of the punches, he was taking to gauge Jones power. One fight I would have loved to see, and we never got it----Jimmy Young vs. Larry Holmes. That would have been a master class on strategic boxing. Young blew his chance at a title shot against Holmes by losing two straight fights to Ossie Ocasio.
This is just my top 5 where Larry Holmes fit in as an all time great champion... 1. Muhammad Ali 2. Larry Holmes 3. Lennox Lewis 4. Evander Holyfield 5. Mike Tyson I don't think it's too many people that will disagree with my top 5 some will but not most...
Joe Louis was champ for 12 years, 25 defenses against the world's best including Hitler's guy. He has to make the list. Marciano 49-0 got to put him amongst the best too. George Foreman 2 time champ and never sit down on stool the comeback. Beat Shannon Briggs but got robbed. Carried a cow on his back for training. Got to put him on the list too
Don't forget Mike Weaver got his ass whooped by Larry Holmes many years later in a rematch when they both was old man, Larry Holmes was just a better guy... It had nothing to do with Mike Weaver's manager or his trainer or anything else...

There was something about Holmes that made even journeyman fighters, and gatekeepers, extend themselves past what they usually would do. Look at Weaver in this fight, dogging Holmes like he was a bone. Two years later, in the Tate fight, his corner had to _beseech_ him to throw punches.
I liked both but look at the amount of times Weaver landed clean solid punches. I don’t think Larry would have survived the same punches from a prime Tyson

Couldn't agree more. The Oliver McCall and Tom Prater fights are another great example -- Larry took punishment, but dished out just as much.

Like Ken Norton.

Man Larry the Easton Assassin Holmes may be the best heavyweight I've seen. Holmes in his prime frustrates Tyson and beats him up
Weaver was good
Hi remember me Ken Norton
But not good enough.Weaver was boxing.Larry was going for the kill.Weaver hasnt got killer punch n didnt know larry cant take blows to head.
Back then the Fans always got their moneys worth We had Great boxers they were very tough men
The uppercut he dropped Weaver with was the same one he tried to land on Tyson but got caught in the ropes, prior to being knocked out.

Are you saying he should have knocked Tyson out if his arm hadn't got caught?
Why the hell were the crowd booing that stoppage?
What a war!
Weaver was excellent, but Holmes was on another level.
If weaver had a good manager and a good trainer he would have easily won this fight and a lot of other ones
Nah, Weaver fought Holmes twice and got knocked out twice, but he was very good.
Corey roberts, i had holmes vs weaver on vhs. Great fight.

I am not sure I saw Holmes fighting with sheer desperation as I saw in this fight.
It amazes me how holmes could dismantle these big strong punchers...... and ko them
That should have been counted as a knockdown for weaver at 2:29.

That was a knockdown for sure.

Larry Holmes.
Holmes should have got an eight count.
Homes had tons of guts but he stood toe to toe too often
