I love today's inspiring message - words to live by. Not the least bit boring and I agree - the basis of a good job is prep, prep, more prep, and when you think you're done, more prep. Great video, Del and Penny. Great results and I am very much looking forward to the next step. Greetings from Canada's capital, where it's SNOWING (?!) today!
I'm impressed by the quality of finish on this Triumph. If it was mine I would leave well alone, but then again I'm not really into cutomising. Thanks for your videos. Thay are informative and a joy to watch.
Bought a new inner fork tube and did the bushings and seals all by myself thanks to your wisdom my front end is top notch. Idk what id do without these videos. Ps i did the milk carton trick. Worked like a charm!
Nice video Del & Penny, job well done mate. My dad was a painter and the word stay in my head from a kid, son preparation is everything, if you want a great paint job. Hope your getting some sunshine over there. Have a good week. Cheers
Hey buddy, thank you for those kind words. i have an outline plan, and hopefully it's in thew right direction for the style of bike.. paint shop visit up next. Have a great week and take care. Del.
Yes you have a flawless heritage Del and Penny with your amazing channel that I am proud to be part of because it started with the right preparation! God bless
Stripping the bits off is certainly a great way to save $. But for the viewers, always check with your body shop before sanding. I've dealt with a couple over the years who prefer to do the sanding themselves, or they wont guarantee their work. Great job as always Del!
Thank you Jamie, I'll be simply using their facility and actually painting it myself as I want to do the whole job, they know what I'm capable of since I did the Harley paint job there, so they're more than happy to let me get on with it... but a good point, have a great week!
Loved the dental floss trick to remove the badge, a lot of good work and imaginative mods have gone into this bike, looking forward to see your choice of paint. 👀😊
Thank you Sam. Glad you like it! I have all the hard work to do now, and if i get it right, not just the physical execution of the painting.. but the colour choice, then it can define the bike and make it a real success.. so fingers crossed.
The heat shields I've done so far were green Scotch pad on the chrome, and high temp grill paint on top. I haven't even used primer, and you've seen the results I get. They hold up as well as you can expect "normal" paint to hold up. I've also done my ignition switch, fuel door lid button, and hinges and latch on my tour pack the same way. lol You've taught me a LOT about rattle can painting, brother.
Hey J, great to hear from you, how is the big bad shredder going? Thanks for your kind words, but the skill at painting is all in your hands, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink, so many people have got the principle, but they just can't get the hand skills to lay the paint up evenly... but once you've got the muscle memory and practice, it's clearly something you would always be good at! Hope life is good, keep safe, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 Hey brother. I'm having a ball on it, as you'd expect. The second set of parts is at the powder coater now, and it'll have the 10k done on it while the mechanic has it torn apart to replace stuff. I recently got a big kid air compressor (5hp, 2 stage, 80 gallon tank....Lowe's has been selling out of the Kobalt brand, so I got it for about half the normal price...) so hopefully, I'll get to try my hand at HVLP painting soon. Hi Del, 400 grit is fine for the etch coat primer. Triumph have done a nice touch in making metal side panels, quality indeed. I have just discovered that anti clog sand paper, it has come in handy for all the plaster boarding I have been doing, it is very good stuff. If I was a gambling man i would bet those tank rubbers wont be going back on :) maybe even the tank badges might be replaced with some graphic stickers. Coming together nicely, keep up the good work.
Ah thanks buddy, good guess, certainly going to replace the tank rubbers with something more interesting, but I do rather like those awesome tank badges, Penny's gonna refurbish them for me, she had a steady hand and a tiny paintbrush unlike fumbly sausage fingers here!
As usual, an awesome thorough job, Del! That brake cleaner and heat gun really do give some nice results. On occasion, my mother-in-law sticks to her lawn chair. Both the brake cleaner and the heat gun (set on ultra high) help tremendously in getting her unstuck, especially if she’s been out there for a few nights straight. Hope you both have a great week and are getting out to do some riding! 🏍👍🏍

I dont get why people are giving it a THUMBS DOWN. Its obvious what the video is about. What did they expect, baking a choc cake with banana and strawberry icing ?
paint work is about a 10:1 ratio of crappy sanding and cleaning all for that satisfying moment when the parts turn out the intended color!! (if not more)
Prep now fixes time spent fixing paintwork by half or more. Ha, can hear it now all the howls of why are you painting the chrome it looks so good. The sanding sheets are great... don't get enough time on call-outs, which saves a large amount of time.
They are held also by the panel mounting screws, they are stuck as well so they don't fall off when you unscrew the panels...they stay attached and lined up. !
As I kneel before the shrine of lightness - & Colin Chapman's image floats, unaided, in front of the magnolia blandosity of domestic living, - my heart gladdens to the sound of glorious scraping, the scream of torque sapping matter being shredded away from the comfy sofa of good looks, leaving the serious elements of the metallurgist's art free to achieve their greatness unhindered . . . then I awake . . . & realise it's just Del-the-paint clearing yet another 'building site' on UA-cam. Cool stuff, I wonder why you wouldn't use your blasting cabinet to scuff the chrome parts, is it because it has on there a glass beed medium and you don't want to change it for a more course one?
Oooooh paint , the best bit ! ..................( in a David Attenborough voice ) and here we have the Delboy stalking his prey ....... the motorcycle part awaiting it fate ........ slooowly creeping up to it and BAM ! grabs it before it has a chance to escape ! Hi mate.. im going to be painting this very much along the modern commercial procedures.. three coats of 2k sealer, then a basecoat and 6 coats of clear.. if i make no errors, it should turn out really well.
Watched holding hands over eyes when you inserted the cloth into the tank opening to take off the paint around the neck Was it going to drop into the tank !!!! You laugh I've seen it done twice now The solution? Heavy piece of fishing line ( 30lbs ) about 1 meter long tie on a fishing treble hook say a size 10 and insert the hook into the same opening them simply roll the tank around its axis a few times ( remembering keep a hold of the other end of the hook line) then slowly withdraw the fishing line and I can guarantee the hook will catch any soft material inside the tank to withdraw it If you fail the first time simply repeat the procedure 100 % guaranteed to remove soft materials from the tank Trust me I've had to do it twice now 🤣
Hi Del it looks to me that you have done prep many times and you made it look easy mate Hope penny was not to bored tell her great camera work as always I am looking forward to the finish paint job .Which one of you picked the final colours
Hi Dean, prep is always therapeutic, gives you time to think and consider things like the colour... we both considered many options, and it's down to a short list of three, but until the first half of it is painted (the one colour we have decided on), the secondary colour won't me apparent, so we're gonna do that part first and that will help us decide! Have a good week mate, see ya Friday!
Hi Andy, no need to disturb it and break the seal, it's perfectly clean and easier to mask it up, otherwise it means buying a full seal kit for no reason, same as I did on the Harley...
Ok Del, I thought you'd have put the chrome parts in your blast cabinet to get down to the bare metal, seems I was wrong. Will the scuffed chrome make a good enough key for the paint?
The glass bead blast media won't touch chrome, the scuff pads are perfect for the job and as I explained there's no need whatsoever to remove chrome, just scuff it up and paint it!
That's not correct, the blast media would leave a textured finish that you'd then have to rub down, the process of rubbing down flattens out imperfections, like the pin stripes and the joint between two different colours of paint... there's no lazy solution to preparing paintwork, it's just hard hand work...
Try a couple of handfuls of steel BB's in a pint of water... seal it up and shake the living daylights out of it for half hour... then wash them all out the tap hole, rinse with paraffin until clean.. then line with "Petseal" Job done, !
That's for polishing and refining the surface, the sanding media here is designed for dry use, like a non-clogging cloth, and it gives you the chance to feel as you go and get a perfect keyed finish for painting, it's what pro shops do when painting cars wet sanding is for finishing after paint, but when keying up, it's done dry!
